You cannot just plug this one in and play but all in all an easy and rather inexpensive fix. It took about 10 minutes and has been running perfectly. well, the drive may be fine but, when I received the drive I was skeptical due to the fact that the drive was not in a box. it was wrapped in plastic and in a shipping box. I took the drive out and began the process of replacing mine. I opened the new drive to be able to swap boards for ease and discovered that there was no way the drive was a new drive. I had ordered a new drive and found lint and score marks on the inside of the drive as well as could see that the board had been removed once already. Not Happy due to the fact that I ordered a new drive not a used one. I figured the drive must at least work because mine did not and so I proceeded with the replacement. the drive works but makes so much racket that I would have to turn the volume up so high on my TV to be able to understand what was being said the neighbors in the county could hear it. Needless to say, I trashed the drive and ordered another drive from another vender. I am satisfied with the drive. It does make more noise than the stock one I had in the Xbox but at least it runs. I plan to use this one for a while and when the noise drives me the rest of the way up the wall I will order a stock one. Be wary of orders from thumbmonkey!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easiest XBox Repair Job Ever, October 15, 2010

This review is from: Xbox 360 DVD DRIVE Hitachi LG 79FK GDR-3120L (Electronics)
So I finally sit down to play my newly unpackaged copy of Halo: Reach when I discover my XBox making some funny noises and refusing to read my disc. Surprised that it spit my precious game out unscathed, I went on to try again and again to get my 360 back on its feet. After punching it and myself a few times and shedding a few tears (of anger and annoyance more than anything), I turned to Google to find that this has apparently happened a lot. Just a mechanical failure I guess. I breathed a sigh of relief. So I click a few times to Amazon and find this. I was kinda bummed that it's a bit more expensive then the newer model drives, but my 'Box would take nothing else. Ordering it couldn't have been simpler, and it got here within four days. Then came the hard part which almost all of you will have to do, so PAY ATTENTION!! (I'd like to thank another reviewer for posting this and helping me out, but I cant remember his/her name right now, anyway...) So you have two options. You can either spend your precious time and bet the life of your 'Box on the firmware flashing skills that you may or may not have (I have no idea whether I do or not, I chose the easier method) or you can simply take out the board from your old Hitachi/LG same-model drive and put in into this one. I don't recommend this for those of you who haven't done a little circuit-surgery before. Then again, you wouldn't be trying to fix your XBox yourself if you hadn't (unless you're stupid, but now we're getting off track). Be careful with all those thin cables. Try not to bend the contacts out of position (you'll know what I mean). It should be easy to figure out which cables go where when you're putting the other board in (even if you do have short-term memory loss). A little mental note, remember which drive is which and which board is which (I almost failed at that part). From there it should be as simple as plugging the new drive in and closing your system back up. Anyway, this drive worked perfectly for me and now I can enjoy one of the most anticipated titles of all time. By the way, if you happen to see me online (MyNameIsEvan13), don't pwn me too bad. I helped you, remember?

A bit of a hassle to flash the DVD-ROM, but some web searching helped. Unfortunately the older drive could not read DVDs so it was impossible to retrieve the DVD key for the XBox 360 (98 Hitachi ROM, IIRC). In the end this drive accepted the board from the broken drive and worked well. My brother-in-law is a happy man, thank you.

Shipping was a tad slow and the drive could have been packaged better, but I can't give a 4.5, so it gets a 5.

Future buyers beware, this product requires a fair amount of knowledge and web searching as well as a computer with SATA connections and Windows to flash the new ROM. If you are not comfortable with computer components or electricity in general you may want to find a technician to do the work instead. If you are, the tutorials are out there and are helpful, and a drive like this is a much cheaper alternative.

Dont buy this if it is not the exact replacement model number and you are willing to void your XBOX warrentee. Also, you have to know how to flash the firmware on this drive from your PC. I contacted seller VideoGameAdvantage.com to return. They gave me an address and instructions which I followed. THey refused the shipment and had it sent back to me. I'm out the $30.

1.0 out of 5 stars "New" wasn't new..., December 31, 2010

This review is from: Xbox 360 DVD DRIVE Hitachi LG 79FK GDR-3120L (Electronics)
I ordered a disc drive that was supposed to be "new". It wasn't.
There were marks on the case where it had obviously been installed before.
It also arrived with a dented case that prevented the disc from running smoothly. I had to swap the case from the "new" drive with my old case to get the drive to run correctly. Not the kind of thing you would (or should) expect.
However, the X-Box is running again! Gamer is happy.

My son's X box 360 DVD drive failed. I had heard that you could fix these yourself so I took the X box apart and found the model of the DVD player. I ordered this replacement (the same model as the one in my son's X box)from Amazon and it arrived in two days. Then I took each DVD player apart and swapped the circuit board from the old DVD player into the new one. The old circuit board has the codes that allow the DVD player to read the games disk. Without those codes you x box is only a movie player. I then placed the new DVD player (containing the old player's circuit board) into the x box and fired it up. Everything is working fine and has been working without fail for two months so far. Microsoft wanted $150 to repair and I did it for about $50.

Buyer please be aware that this is not a new drive. It is in fact a refurbished drive. Why the seller is advertising this as new is just bad business. The drive I received was manufactured in 2005. Seller was contacted and didn't offer any explanation other than saying they get the drives from Microsoft and that it should be fine. Not wanting to deal with this anymore I went ahead and installed it and it appears to be working fine. I can understand that this model may no longer be produced..it has been 6+ years since the 360 came out. However I do no appreciate deceptive business practices and those interested in purchasing from this company should keep this in mind
