Great idea, poor quality,

The design is just what I had been looking for: a cooler pad that could fit my 17" laptop and be used comfortably as a lap desk. I own two of them.
The plastic "bump" that angles the back of the laptop upward is a fair design, though one of the cooler pads I own has an unfortunate tendency to suddenly collapse back to being perfectly flat after it's been shifted a few times. The other cooler pad doesn't do this, so it may be a manufacturing flaw. Both pads developed noisy fans within a couple months of purchase. The fans grind like a lawnmower engine upon starting up and must be tapped until they settle down. They still rumble after that, but not as badly. It sounds as though they are poorly balanced (vibrating) or dying. They deterioriated very rapidly. It's not like these cooler pads were being dropped or subjected to large shocks. They were just being used normally -- picked up, put down, shifted around, sometimes tilted side-side or back-front depending on how the user was sitting. It seems reasonable to expect that the fans don't suddenly start grinding (loudly, I might add) one day after such tame treatment.

I was in the laptop cooler search for a long time - tried Targus, Antec - and finally came across this beauty. Important for me were: (1) portability and (2) efficiency.
I've had this product now for almost 2 years. No problem with excess fan noise or shoddy construction. I've taken it to Hong Kong with me in my backpack and had no problems with the shell. Pros: (1) It does what a laptop cooler should do! Essentially the optimal coolers are ones that give enough space both BELOW and ABOVE the unit to allow air to circulate. This one does both, although sometime I put my wallet in there to help the airflow. (2) Works great with my 15" MBP, running bootcamp to play games the videocard get's engaged and HOT. runs in a cooler range with this. Cons: (1) the other reviews don't lie - the back tilt will come down and collapse if you're moving this around all the time. I've never had this problem though since I connect my computer to an external monitor/keyboard and essentially don't budge my laptop at all. (2) No extra USB port (like the Belkin model). (3) This really does not work well on the lap (adequate airflow is obstructed). Other one's you might consider: (1) Something new that's come out since I bought this is the Antec 200 cooling system. No USB ports, but looks much sturdier (and non-portable) than this unit. A lil' pricier at $65 ish on Amazon. (2) the Belkin laptop cooler - looks just like this but has 4 extra USB ports. Haven't tried it yet, but hard to beat the deal for $20 at Costco.

I've had this product for about a year or more and I do agree with the other reviewers that the height adjuster, will collapse suddenly. It's because the adjuster is plastic and after a while the adjuster wears out, specially if you use the same height setting all the time. The adjuster can't hold the weight of the laptop; the height adjuster should be metal so it can stay in place. This lap cooler should have more fans, it really depends on your laptop as to where it has the heat sink of the CPU. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T61p 15.4 and the heat sink is on the upper left bottom side, the fan on the lap cooler is in the middle so, it doesn't cool that area well. Before you buy a lap cooler find out where the laptop produces more heat. There are models out there that have more than one fan so investigate before you buy. I like the black color because my laptop is black and the style/aesthetics of the cooler. You can rest your arms on its wrist rest for a more comfortable posture. I would've given it 5 starts if it had more fans and a metal height adjuster.

My last laptop had a big problem with dirt collecting at the vents and over heating from that. I had to clean it once a month. It finally died from dirt and over heating. So I purchased this thinking it would help keep my new laptop cool and clean by keeping it elevated. It has done both beautifully. I've had it in operation for two months non-stop. The fan is whisper quiet. The problem with this is I cannot raise the tilt. I've tried it a few times and with no warning, the plastic support collapsed and my laptop went slamming down. I did this three times before learning my lesson. I'm lucky if I didn't do any damage. Do your hard drive a favor and don't use this unless you keep it at the flat level. I wish I had not of purchased it.

I've had two of these laptop trays, they work great and keep the core of my laptop nice and cool. I've had overheating issued on several laptops, and this keeps the temperattues way down. only problems with it, are after a while the motor/fan can become noisy when first turned on. After a minute or two is calms down, and is reasonably quiet again, only slightly lounder than the laptop itself.

This cooling mat does a decent job at cooling my laptop. After a month of use the cooling fan started to make a lot of noise, almost as if it is hitting some of it's plastic casing. The only way I can get the fan to quiet down, is to jam a pen into it and allow start up again which usually takes about eight attempts. So if you don't mind rebooting the fan several times, it really isn't that bad.

I bought this cooler pad about 4 months ago. So far, it has been great. A very noticeable difference in the temp of my laptop. The keyboard used to get hot and I mean hot enough to where I didn't want to leave the machine on for any length of time. Now, I leave the puter on for hours at a time without any heat problems. It still gets warm where the hard drive is located but warm is expected. It is quiet and has never collapsed on me as others have stated. Would buy it again in a minute.

I have had this for a little over a year and just love it. Absolutely no performance problems at all. I have a 17 inch Toshiba laptop(heavy.....) that has a history of running hot. I have this on the breakfast room table so I can check e mail without having to climb a flight of stairs to my "office". (I am retired) This has just the right degree of tilt, height is perfect and the fan is powerful and yet quiet. (I like it so much I am going to move this to my "office" laptop and get theXbrand model that has 4 USB hubs on the back plus the fan.) This is sturdy when the tilt option is used correctly and my laptop is cool as a cucumber !
I will say that from time to time I lift my laptop and brush any dog/cat hair away from the fan and the back of my laptop. I also will use the vacuum hose to suck out any "stuff" in the fan portion and that has worked well. I have a slew of rescue dogs and cats so I expect hair to be an issue with anything I buy. When the laptop is off, I also use a Swiffer wipe for a quick clean up to get up stray hairs.... I got a better price than Amazon.com is showing at a national membership shopping club. Bought it on whim without doing any research and have been more than pleased. I can recommend without reservation !

A Friend suggested that I get a cool pad for my new laptop. At first I was like naw. Then i had my laptop going for a few hours and noticed my laptop getting hot. I bought this Xbrand. And have never had a problem. Mine is very quiet but if there isn't much background u can hear the fan. But so worth the life of your laptop. After long use I have felt the bottom of my laptop. Feels almost cold. Excellent product.
