Editorial Reviews

Review

The book proceeds like a meal of dim sum, a succession of piquant little items, light but nourishing. The author is succinctly illuminating on the Chinese peculiarities likely to be relevant to a foreigner -- the remarks on 'modesty' should be read weekly by Western linguists.
-- The Spectator

Xenophobe's of the world unite. There is hope that through these small but observant books you may be able to overcome ingrained prejudice.
-- Gibraltar Chronicle

The Xenophobe's Guide to the Chinese is exactly what it claims to be on its back cover, 'an irreverent look at the beliefs and foibles of (the Chinese), almost guaranteed to cure xenophobia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious because it's (mostly) accurate!, February 19, 2001
I bought this book while I was living in Hong Kong, and I read it again and again ... often to and from work while on public transport. I would look around me at the people surrounding me and then chuckle. It just described Chinese society in such a way that you both found it hilarious and informative at the same time. I think the more you know about Chinese societies, the funnier you will find this book. Unfortunately I've now lost my copy because I lent it to a Chinese friend who found it so funny and interesting, that she's never given it back. If you're looking for a book to reinforce your prejudices though, I suggest you look elsewhere ... it's not that kind of book.
