Editorial Reviews

Review

"Light-hearted guides well worth reading before you visit any of the countries or, if you have relatives that hail from those parts of the world, they can explain a lot."
--Burton Mail

"An enlightened new series, good natured, witty and useful. The Xenophobe's Guides to different nations deserves a real cheer."
--The European

From the Back Cover

'Italy's laws would be perfect without the Italians, who pay little attention to most of them. For example, although seatbelts are compulsory, few Italians actually wear them (in some parts of Italy there is even a roaring trade in T-shirts with seatbelts painted on them).
The Italians know that although other countries might be more powerful and better organized than Italy, in reality the people in the rest of the world behave the same way they do and are just as corrupt as they are, only sometimes they're smarter at not be caught.'
Xenophobia is an irrational fear of foreigners, probably justified, always understandable.
Xenophobe's Guides - an irreverent look at the beliefs and foibles of nations, almost guaranteed to cure Xenophobia. (4 1/4 x 7, 64 pages)

4.0 out of 5 stars Pointing out most of the italians (bad) habits, May 15, 2001
By
Luca Di Gaspero (Amsterdam, the Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Xenophobe's Guide to the Italians (Xenophobe's Guides - Oval Books) (Paperback)
This book points out most of the italians habits (both the bad and good ones) with respect to family, food, love affairs, etc., giving a good picture of the italian people in an objective, but funny, way. I am Italian and I must admit that most of the attitudes described in the book are real, even if, sometimes, they are a bit exaggerated. I suggest this book to the people who already visited Italy and, therefore, they can easily understand what is a caricature and what is real. Finally, the book can be read in just a couple of hours (I read it during a flight from Holland to Italy).

4.0 out of 5 stars An ironic look at a people's characteristics - To be taken with a grain of salt, but otherwise pretty much unmissable!, January 30, 2011
By
Adriano1977 (Langen (Hessen), Deutschland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Xenophobe's Guide to the Italians (Xenophobe's Guides - Oval Books) (Paperback)
There are many truths here (I should know, I'm Italian :-), some baffling generalisations (coming from somebody who's written well after the 19th century, that is), but overall the book is nice, informative, fun, full of irony and stylish. I laughed out loud quite often, and I was saddened by some spot-on characterisation of our defects just as many times.

5.0 out of 5 stars A funny small book, if you have sense of humor, February 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Xenophobe's Guide to the Italians (Xenophobe's Guides - Oval Books) (Paperback)
This (small) book is good and funny, albeit if you can go pass it's stereotypical nature. As a matter of fact, all the Xenophobe's Guide "series" are of the same theme. Besides the funny side of the book I found it instructive that, from my observations, the book is also about day to day believes that people have and/or act on.
