From Publishers Weekly

Here's an old-fashioned adventure story, closely modeled on the EC science fiction comics of the 1950s, but with a modern slant. In the 26th century, Earth has been overrun by a new ecosystem, dinosaurs have returned and the grand old cities are half-submerged under water. It is the Xenozoic era, and human beings, having survived an environmental cataclysm in 2020, are still alive though split into tribes and co-existing with new creatures. Guiding readers through this world are Cadillac mechanic/shaman/adventurer Jack Tenrec (big cars have survived, too) and the ambassador/scientist Hannah Dundee. The duo embarks on a series of adventures grounded in bringing their two tribes together and learning more about the world outside their lands. Each of this volume's 12 stories stands on its own, but taken together fully show Schultz's world and form a larger epic. Jack is a worldly environmentalist, haunted by past events and determined not to disrupt the Earth again, and Hannah is more of a political animal. Both are daring, fierce explorers. Naturally, their snappy banter hints at a future romance between the mismatched pair. Schultz's artwork is directly inspired by pulp art of the 1940s and '50s, and his pages are almost bathed in ink as he renders every last detail in lush b&w. Even the figures and faces-square jaws and curvaceous bodies-resemble pulp heroes. Occasionally, Schultz seems so busy trying to achieve accuracy and detail, he fails to completely engage readers on a plot level. But he's made his own world with those borrowed parts, and it's fun exploring it with him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh, finally..., October 2, 2003

Praise the lord! Finally, someone has collected and rereleased Mark Shultz's wonderful pulp series! When it was originally published by the now defunct Kitchen Sink Comics in the mid-1980's, Shultz's retro-art and story telling was remarkable in its homage to the pulp comics of the 1950's and 1960's. Released quarterly, and then annually, the series tells the story of a 'world gone mad' after a mysterious apocalypse. 500 years later, the story pick up with a new generation of humans thrust into a foreign world where dinosaurs rule, and homo sapien is no longer the top of the food chain.

Some people may recognize the characters of Hannah Dundee and Jack Tenrec from the short-lived animated series ("Cadillacs and Dinosaurs") that ran during the 1993 season. Also released around the same time was the Cadillacs and Dinosaurs video game. I found the comics series after being exposed through the animated series and was surprised at the depth and quality. I am delighted that Dark Horse obtained the rights to the series and has republished it in its entirety.

My only dissapointments are that the three three-issue limited series released by Topps' comic division in the mid-1990's aren't included, and that Mr. Shultz has opted not to continue such an original and amazing series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cadillacs, Dinosaurs, and Beautiful Women, December 3, 2003

The time is the future. The Earth has been wracked by a cataclysm that has resulted in the Xenozoic Age. This is a land where humans are a minority, the seas have risen, and dinosaurs walk the land again.

The City in the Sea is home to one group of humans. Among them is Jack Tenrec, a mechanic bent on protecting the Earth and preventing another cataclysm.

The stories begin when a representative of the Warhoon arrives and becomes fascinated with Jack. They have a number of adventures and we learn more of the strange world of the Xenozoic Age.

Beautiful black and white illustrations illuminate the fascinating tales in this volume. A great read for any fans of dinosaurs and classic cars.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Wait Is Over!!!!!, June 29, 2003

Imagine a terrible cataclysm that destroyed civilization as we know it; Humanity has been all but eradicated, the few survivors driven underground. They emerge hundreds of years later to find a brave new world awaits them, a new age...The Xenozoic Age, where man must co-exist with Dinosaurs, Mammoths, and creatures that have never been seen before, such as the mysterious Grith, humanoid lizard-people who have existed unseen since before man evolved from the Apes. The gorgeous Hannah Dundee arrives at the City By The Sea as an ambassador of her people, The Wasoon, and is soon partnered up with Jack "Cadillac" Tenrec, a Shaman/auto mechanic, who alternates between trying to repair salvaged technology from before the cataclysm and teaching his fellow man to respect the delicate balance between Humanity and nature. With Jack as her guide, Hannah begins to learn about The City By The Sea and it's inhabitants, but Hannah has a hidden agenda, and it seems like The Grith may have some plans of their own for the lovely Ambassador....

Xenozoic Tales Volume One: After The End reprints issues 1-6 of Mark Schultz' mid-eighties classic Xenozioc Tales, along with a seldom-seen Xenozoic story from Death Rattle #8, an introduction by Paleontologist Philip J. Currie, a sketch gallery, and a brand-new cover. Schultz' art is beautifully detailed without ever being cluttered; It's very reminiscent of Al Williamson and other classic EC Comics artists, and that's just about the highest compliment I can give. It's also fun to see Schultz' artistic style evolve over the course of the book- He just keeps getting better and better. Highly recommended to anyone who loves a well-told story, or just plain likes Dinosaurs. And who doesn't like Dinoasurs....?
