4.0 out of 5 stars Fast, excellent print quality, good scanning, nice software
I am very happy with my M940. B/W printing is excellent on high quality inkjet paper. Color photo printing is a little grainy and the colors don't exactly match. (I haven't tried Photo gloss paper yet though.) The speed is very good in my opinion. I also have scanned a few images. 1.0 out of 5 stars Stay away from this machine and Xerox
Less than one year ago I bought the Xerox M940. I had heard good reports about Xerox and it's service. The service is very poor, and so is the life of their print heads. Within 8 months the color print head showed signs of wear. Xerox offers a 12 month warrenty on this product. But, as I found out, it doesn't cover the [money] color print head, nor the [money] black...

I am very happy with my M940. B/W printing is excellent on high quality inkjet paper. Color photo printing is a little grainy and the colors don't exactly match. (I haven't tried Photo gloss paper yet though.) The speed is very good in my opinion. I also have scanned a few images. Overall, scanning is very good, maybe not for a graphics professional, but fine for web pages or e-mailing photos. The software provided is excellent. The OCR software works great! The scanner/image software is nice too and very easy to use. Copier functions are menu driven on the LCD display, includes enlarge, reduce, lighten/darken. Very easy to use. Overall, the M940 does everything pretty well. For ~the price it is a GREAT product!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful printer - get the M950, though, July 6, 2001

This review is from: Xerox WorkCentre M940 (Office Product)
The M940 is a fantastic printer - great color, easy to use, all that you'd really want in a printer. The bundled software is incredible, the OCR software works seemlessly, converting printed documents into soft-docs in minutes. Installation had only the traditional snags (i.e. my machine has problems recognizing the modem, so the fax software doesn't function). Speed is a bit tepid to those used to high-speed lasers, but who cares, you're finally home, right? Two suggestions: buy the M950 and make sure that you don't depend on the USB cord if you ever 'Sleep' your machine. If you ever plan to do any significant photocopying or scanning, you will quickly realize how much the automatic document feeder would mean to you. Hand scanning is quite laborious. Also, Windows 2000 does not handle USB devices well after 'Sleeping' and you will not be able to contact the printer after waking up your computer (at that point you'll have to reboot to talk to your printer). Buy the IEEE parallel cord (it should cost no more than $...) to solve the problem.

This replaced a 7 year old Canon Laser copier.. I really love it - I copied an 8x10 colored picture with almost perfect results can't tell the difference with out a magnifying glass. A fast B&W letter in the draft mode (it's very good and acceptable for most conditions)-- about 10 seconds. Buy it, I don't want to be the only one to own it.

1.0 out of 5 stars No satisfaction from THE LEMON, March 2, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Xerox WorkCentre M940 (Office Product)
I wrote the review entitled, "A Lemon". After several phone calls to Xerox, the technician admitted that he had seen these hardware problems before with this unit, and sent a refurb. I'm having the same problems, ie: "no printer installed", "no communication", "spool error 32", "error F900". Computer won't boot or freezes with printer connected. Hours of attempts to fix have failed. XEROX no longer sells these, but they are still being sold as new, refurbs, and used by many dealers. Be aware of this fact. You get what you pay for, but what you pay for is still supposed to work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dirt cheap for what it offers!, September 18, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Xerox WorkCentre M940 (Office Product)
For the price of a regular ink-jet printer, the price itself is worth 5 stars. The print quality is comparable to an Epson Stylus printer. However, printing speed is noticeably slower than manufacturer specs. Scanner came with really easy to use software interface. The scanning colors tend to be much more saturated than the original. But that can be easily adjust with any graphics software. Copier is again, slow but tolerable. Customer service is also very good and speedy. My workcentre came with the driver CD missing. I called and it was shipped to me overnight express. For those of you who is running Win2000, you have to download the driver and add-on software from their web-site. It could be a pain if you don't have internet access.

3.0 out of 5 stars All in one.... now if just one would work, September 9, 2002

When it was time for me to replace my old printer (and I do mean old), I was immediately attracted to the Xerox WorkCentre M940. I had always resisted buying a scanner for my computer because I didn't have enough space for it. The M940 was perfect for my needs. Not only was I buying a printer, but also a copier, a scanner, and a fax machine. It was great.

Two weeks later I went back to the store to get a partial refund (I took advantage of the store's price guarantee), I noticed that none of the Xerox printers were on display anymore. Over the next couple of weeks, I realized that no computer store was carrying Xerox printers any longer. I knew that I was going to be in for a long, bumpy ride.

For the first few months, my Xerox printer worked great. I had no real problems with it. But slowly and surely, problems have crept in. The biggest problem is that, for reasons I have yet to figure out, my computer will refuse to talk to the printer during the print command. Though it doesn't have too often, it is still inconvenient to have to both reboot my computer and unplug/replug the power cord to my printer.

In addition, my color print head has decided to go beserk on me. First, a little piece of the copper(?) strip on the bottom of the color print head had bent backwards, smearing the freshly laid ink on the paper as it went by. I removed the offending bent strip, and for two weeks the printer worked great again. But now I cannot get the red ink to print. I hope that once I replace the print head this will take care of the problem, but as of the time of this review I haven't had the copier long enough that I should have to replace the print head.

The accompanying programs are a mixed bag as well. The QuickLink III fax program is terrific, allowing me to both send and receive faxes on my computer. The Pagis Inbox is a great storing tool for your scanned materials... that is, when you can get a good scan. For some reason, I often have to scan a document three or four times before I get a good scan off of it. It's not that the scanner doesn't pick up what's on the paper, but it often picks it up at an angle instead of straight. This can become very aggravating, very quickly.

There are many good qualities of the Xerox M940 (when the print heads are working, the quality of the copies are second to none), which is why I am giving it three stars. But you have to have patience if you are going to use this machine. Chances are, there are better quality all-in-one printers on the market today. If you have the money, get one of those. If you don't have the money, well...... just try to save up.

2.0 out of 5 stars Requires enormous patience, August 14, 2005
This review is from: Xerox WorkCentre M940 (Office Product)
This machine worked okay at first, but then the colors began to streak and fail, and long after the color printing capability died, the machine still occasionally ran out of colored ink. This was a real inconvenience because all I used it for was a B&W copier, scanner, and B&W printer. This past week, it ran out of magenta ink, and now refuses to print, even in black and white. There must be a way to bypass the ink sensor and continue printing in black and white -- does anyone know how to fool it? Yesterday I found that nobody (local) carries those color ink cartridges anymore, so unless I can make it _think_ there's magenta ink, the machine is now USELESS.

I can't believe I wasted $200 for the machine and $72 to replace all print cartridges and have not been able to print a single document. I'll never buy another Xerox product as long as I live. Burn me once shame on you... Burn me twice, I'm an Idiot!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Machine for the money, March 4, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Xerox WorkCentre M940 (Office Product)
I have had this machine since 1999 and it has not fail. Used for desktopp publishing the key is not to leave the cartridges go totally empty. I find I get 750 sheets from the black cartridge and over the expected limits on the heads. It is used primarily as a copier or attached to a sytem running win 98 SE. For the money I found it to be very practical. I wish Xerox would continue to make inkjet multi-function machines like this.
