2.0 out of 5 stars Good printer but supplies are very expensive
The main reason I purchased this printer was to save on printing cost compared to my inkjet printer and because it was much faster. I've figured that the inkjet was about $0.26 per page when printing flyer/programs for school. I know all about how print capacities vary from page to page, but with the standard cartridges saying 2000 pages per cartridge I figured at 2000...

We have a small accounting firm that's an all-Mac shop. We only use Xerox for our printing needs because of the quality, speed, reliability, and features. True PostScript printing, easy networking of printer, quality drivers, and excellent print quality are hallmarks of Xerox.

We've tortured Xerox B&W laser printers for years and they keep printing with very few paper jams. The 6180N color laser will get a bit less use but so far over thousands of print jobs, we have had zero issues and have been impressed at the quality of photo & text output, absence of banding and registration errors, and the volume of output from the toner cartridges.

The one minor niggle is the tendency of laser printers in general to wrinkle the corners of envelopes when printed from Muti-Purpose trays. Higher quality paper reduces the problem.

TIP: Ignore the printer's low toner warning. You can eke out several hundred more pages, depending on coverage.

Seems to be well-built, and if the yield ratings can be believed, the toner costs are in line with other makes, and better than the smaller model. The cost of the toner cartridges is breathtaking, but you have to divide the price by the rated yields to make cost comparisons with other printers. The vendors seem to be using the same ISO/IEC 19798 standard to rate yields objectively. Your mileage may vary. Remember that printer vendors are practically giving these things away, probably well below the real costs, to sell toner cartridges.

It's not going to give you glossy photo-quality prints, and you shouldn't expect that from any of today's laser printers, but the color is just fine for most applications. I've given up on inkjets because of the ink costs and I printed so seldom that the jets would dry up and clog from disuse, so I just go down somewhere to have photos printed when I want a photo-quality print.

Any printer, especially color PostScript printers, usually benefit from more memory, and this one is no exception. Xerox should be ashamed of asking $719 for a 512MB module. This is the largest they offer, even though the 6180 can use a 1GB module. Here's what Xerox doesn't want you to know - (drum roll please) - I put a 1GB 200 pin DDR2 SODIMM 128MX64 PC2-5300 module in mine, and it works just fine. I also only paid $12 plus shipping for it. Since Xerox charges sixty times more for a memory module half the size, theirs may be a little overpriced.

The main reason I purchased this printer was to save on printing cost compared to my inkjet printer and because it was much faster. I've figured that the inkjet was about $0.26 per page when printing flyer/programs for school. I know all about how print capacities vary from page to page, but with the standard cartridges saying 2000 pages per cartridge I figured at 2000 pages X 4 cartridges at roughly $100 per cartridge this would save a little money at $0.20 per page. I've now printed about 700 pages with a variety of content and I've had to replace 3 of the four cartridges and the black cartridge is down to 40%. This makes the cost per page roughly 3X what I expected.

Personally I feel a little cheated by Xerox for misleading me on this.

The only reason this didn't get 1 star is because the print quality looks really good and it is much faster than the inkjet.

For photo type material, it does print darker than what is seen on the screen and I have to adjust for this. I'm not expecting photographic quality but when doing programs/flyers, this can be a bit of a problem.

3.0 out of 5 stars missing critical feature, January 9, 2009
This review is from: Xerox Phaser 6180/N Color Laser Printer (Office Product)
this printer is missing a basic and useful feature that all other printers have. Basically if I put paper in the manual feed then the printer should automatically gets paper from the manual feed instead. But this printer you have to remember to choose the manual feed tray from the computer setting otherwise it will always get paper from from tray 2 (the standard tray). Even worse, the printer has the option of "tray auto switching" and you would think it means switching between manual tray and tray2. but no, it's actually switching between tray 2 and tray 3 if you have tray 3. The default printer only comes with manual feed and tray2. And this is not documented and 3 of xerox tech support did not know it either until the 4th one told me it. It took me 3 extra hours on the phone to figure this out. I will buy HP next time. How hard is to put some basic and common feature in a printer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast Network Color Laser, September 19, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Xerox Phaser 6180/N Color Laser Printer (Office Product)
I have had this printer for a month, it is replacing a Xerox solid ink printer that just has it's color messed up, probably due to moving it when it was still warm. A new drum/developer unit costs about the same as this printer, so we made the switch to a new one.

I purchased this printer from Amazon and it came pretty fast. All I had to do was plug it into the network and the AC outlet (after removing the shipping protector's and installing the toner cartridges) and it worked right away.

It found the network gateway and was assigned one of our internal IP addresses. I went to Internet Explorer on the server and typed in the IP address and was able to put in all the needed information to share the printer. When I added it to the server, I initially used the Xerox Global Print Driver, I couldn't change the default from black/white so I used the 6180N drivers and changed the default to color, after that anyone adding it to their computer defaulted to color.

The print quality is great, the only bad thing is when I looked for more toner (before needing more), it costs almost as much as the printer for the standard toner and almost twice as much as the printer cost for the high capacity toner. Everyone was very impressed with the quality and speed.

We've only had it a few weeks, but we're very happy with it. We made a color print of a photo and it was gorgeous, better than our Canon Pixma inkjet printer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great printer, great for home office, February 8, 2009
By
This review is from: Xerox Phaser 6180/N Color Laser Printer (Office Product)
I purchased this Xerox 6180 for home office printing, and I really like it. I have owned it for half a month.
The printer is extremely well built, has ethernet port and USB port for connections. I hooked it up to my wireless router through an ethernet cable, and now every computer at my home can print wirelessly to the printer.
The color is vivid and setup is quite straight forward in my case. A good thing is that I don't need to install junks other than the driver. The printer does not have a big footprint, but is very heavy, of ~75 lbs. The paper tray accepts about 250 pages.
Since I care about power consumption, I measured the power usage of this unit. The printer enters power save mode after certain time (this can be set in the menu, default is 30 mins) and only consumes about 5W in the power saving mode. At the time of printing, the power consumption is about 700W. When "awake" and not printing, it consumes about 30W of power.
I also upgraded the memory in the printer. I used a 512Mb DDR2 SoDIMM modules from a laptop upgrade. The installation is a breeze, through a door on the back of the printer.
This is one of the best economic color laser out there, especially with Xerox cutting price on this unit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buyer be ware -- Rebate Rip off, August 31, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Xerox Phaser 6180/N Color Laser Printer (Office Product)
I recently purchased two of the Xerox Phaser 6180/N printers. The quality appears excellent. Only one BIG problem so far and that is the price that is being quoted by Amazon is after your $100 rebate which is IMPOSSIBLE to get. Read the fine print. I have complained to Amazon about a week ago amd they said that they would correct the misleading information. As of today they still have not made any changes. The printer is still probably a good deal at its current price but do not expect to qualify for the rebate. It is impossible.
