Let me start by saying that aeroponic cloners are, in general, crazy expensive for what they are. They're a case with a pump inside that sprays water. I've seen them range in the several hundreds of dollars for 15-20 cloning sites, and going up from there. It was, therefore, not without a certain degree of hesitation that I looked at the Xfactor Hydro 28. I'd been looking at building a cloner myself (there are copious instructions online), but when I priced up all the parts, time, and extra bits here and there, it wouldn't really have saved me much money over buying one of the Xfactor Hydro cloners, so I took a chance.

I have to say, I'm glad I did. You often hear "this thing is amazing for the price," or some such, which somewhat implies that you are impressed by something that's cheap. That's all well and good, but it often leaves room for the idea that the more expensive ones might be better. In this case, I would disagree with that. Yes, this cloner is a simple design. It's a black, light-blocking bucket with holes in the top and a pump that sprays water on the roots of your cuttings. But that's all any other cloner actually IS. This one just doesn't get pretentious about its origin.

There were some bumps along the way, mind you. It initially arrived without the white PVC sprayer you see in the pictures. It had nozzles, inserts, pump, bucket -- everything else but the sprayer. I contacted Xfactor Hydro about it and they were responsive, apologetic, and helpful, and shipped a sprayer out the next day. Good service and response can make or break a small company, and they're paying careful attention to that. That's a great thing to see. The next little issue is that, the instructions for assembly are not the most detailed in the world.

The item seems to be good quality, first off. Saved me time and research versus doing it myself. Plenty of extras of all the parts included to get started and keep you going for awhile.

On our first attempt, we tried cloning from several different species of plants and followed the online directions exactly. I typically clone plants in a mixture of perlite and vermiculite in a dome after dipping roots in hormone. While that worked slowly with decent success, I wanted to be able to do more plants in less space and be able to take cuttings that were larger than my dome will allow.

We had 100% Failure first go. Nothing rooted and all of the stems rotted away and the plants died. I sterilized everything and did some more research about what additives I could be using in my water. Now, I am changing out the water once a week or more frequently and using some additives in my water and I have roots on about 60% of the plants. I just clipped another round so we'll see and maybe my success rate will increase as I go.

On the first go, I used hormone and added about a tsp in 2 gallons of water and on the subsequent attempts, instead I dipped the plant in hormone and let it sit in a glass of luke warm water for about a half hour before putting in the cloner. Once in the cloner, I don't add anymore hormone. I use some homemade clear rez. You can google clear rez pool shock for finding the recipe and that has wiped out my fungus problems pretty much. It keeps it under control. If you keep it clean enough, the roots can pop before a colony of fungus does. I check the ends of the clippings daily and if I see anything cloudy I spray them down with H2O2 3% and check the rez for colonies, changing and sterilizing if necessary.

I chose to buy the ABC cloner because I realized I couldn't make it myself for much less--and the luxury of having someone else drill 28 holes was definitely worth the nominal additional cost! I received the cloner earlier than promised and it was packaged very well with everything I needed to get started. The instructions are not included in the box (points for conservation!) but they are easily accessed online. The instructions are brief, well-written and easy to understand. They also contain lots of good tips and advice about cloning that I appreciated. That being said, I have never used a bucket system before and will admit I had it out of the box and working in less than 10 minutes--before I thought to look for the instructions. After using it for a couple days, I emailed the company with a general question unrelated to my product purchase. Xfactor Hydro replied within a day and was extremely responsive, helpful and polite. I feel confident recommending the Aeroponic Bucket Cloner to anyone based on product quality and price alone; however, the company's responsiveness and high level of customer service definitely makes me feel like I got the better deal!

Took a while for me to receive package. It's a 3 gallon bucket with a cheap little pump. The neoprene inserts are cheaply made and over time they lose their puffieness and don't seal around the hole and water tends to leak out, or i should say up. There is no hole to run the pump cord through so i just used one of the holes on the lid and wrapped one of the neoprene inserts around it and water did seem to come through. It does the job, but is cheaply made
