Book Description

September 10, 1989
Combining evocative historical description and cogent analysis, Song Full of Tears is a chronicle of nine hundred years of life in southeast China. It reveals the workings of Chinese society in times of environmental and military crises, how the Chinese reacted to changes, threats, and opportunities, and how they dealt with one another and the world of nature and the environment.

Until the eighteenth century Xiang Lake, in the province of Zheijiang, was the stage for morality battles between loyalty and betrayal, chastity and impurity, civic virtue and private greed. After the eighteenth century, concerns about ecology, public rights, and technology emerged as elements in the struggle, and in the twentieth century, the fate of the lake became linked to national political developments and then to technological and ecological realities. Song Full of Tears shows how Chinese views of life, society, and nature both changed and remained constant through the centuries.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The expanse and complexity of Chinese history has proven difficult for Western historians to capture. In this innovative and sophisticated work Schoppa has managed this feat with skill and elegance. He deals with the history of a human-made lake, located south of Shanghai, near Hangchow Bay. The lake was created as a reservoir in the 12th century, and for nearly 900 years officials, landowners, and common peasants have struggled either to encroach upon or to preserve it. Based on local histories, the researches of Chinese, Japanese, and Western scholars, plus his own scholarship, Schoppa presents a rich account of the changing ecology and human drama of this place. A book of great scholarly merit, with an appeal to sophisticated readers who may not be familiar with China. Recommended for both academic and general libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tracking local Chinese life over 9 centuries, May 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Xiang Lake: Nine Centuries of Chinese Life (Hardcover)
This book, originally published by Yale University Press, is indeed out of print, but is an excellent study in the lives of local Chinese elites and peasants. Professor Schoppa spans the centuries by describing in an anecdotal style, a historical picture of life around Xiang Lake, a reservoir in Zhejiang province. Professor Schoppa researched scores of volumes and consulted many scholars and historians in China to write this book.

I personally know the author, and consider him an expert in the field of East Asian Studies.
