Review of Xincom 503 (not about 502),
By
This review is from: Xincom XC-DPG502 Twin WAN Router (Personal Computers)
I have used SMC, Nexland, and Linksys routers. They all worked more-or-less ok (occasional crashes and lockups, missing firmware features, etc.)
I bought a Xincom 503 (XC-DPG503) dual-wan router about a month ago. So far, I have had no crashes, restarts, or lockups. The firmware is excellent with very few missing features. One thing that I wish Xincom would add is PPTP VPN in addition to IPSEC. I sent Xincom a (fairly small) list of suggested firmware improvements - lets see if they respond. Of course, if you don't have two wan connections you probably don't this router. Mike

Excellent router for load balancing,

I've had this router for a long time now. This router has done exactly what I've needed it to do. The load balancing works great, it has never crashed or locked up on me and this router has every feature you could basically need. The only time this router ever goes down is to reboot it for the firmware upgrade to take effect, other than that I have never had any downtime because of it being a router issue. Definitely a great buy if you need load balancing and don't need a VPN router.

The product worked -- marginally -- for a few weeks after I purchased it. I've had several dual-home routers, and the only thing this one has going for it is that the firmware is easier to use than most. However, when it stopped functioning (i.e., turned into a paperweight), their tech-support department wouldn't even pick up their phone. The only exception was on about my 10th call over a three-week period, when someone finally picked up and then slammed the phone back down without even saying hello. They also ignored RMA requests sent via email and fax. I'm not sure whether they're bankrupt or just without any customer service department, but what good is a warranty when no one will respond to your exchange/RMA requests? STAY AWAY!!!

Good Router!,
This review is from: Xincom XC-DPG502 Twin WAN Router (Personal Computers)
The Xincom XC-DPG502 is not for the novice, nor is it for a really big network. Perfect for the 2-75 range. It's user interface is quick and easy to navigate, but you have to know what you are doing to configure this properly. This router is not loaded down with useless features that break the useful features after firmware upgrades.... That is why I like it.
Load balancing actually works! Despite the fact that the router has low system specifications compared to other routers in its class (particularly Netgear's Dual Wan), it handles the network traffic quite nicely. The logs are comprehensive and the built-in diagnostics are actually worth using. The special applications table is too small, if your network is running applications that need more than 10 separate ports open you are out of luck. It errors and says the table is full. Like I said, not for bigger networks. Oh, and Xincom is not defunct. They answer their phones and email, however I haven't had to deal with tech support on the product yet.

I bought this router about a year ago after wanting to throw the previously installed DLink through a window after the 8th lockup of the day. This is the most reliable and transparent router I have come across. It has run faultlessly since it was installed. Installation took a few minutes. I can recommend this router to anybody tired of lockups and sudden disconnects - even if you don't need the twin WAN functionality. It is the best.

Gets the job done,
By
This review is from: Xincom XC-DPG502 Twin WAN Router (Personal Computers)
I owned one of these for about two years, when I lived in an apartment complex where both the local DSL and the local cable were so unreliable that I had to subscribe to BOTH to have any hope of getting work done on a daily basis.
The load balancing on the unit frankly worked better than the fail-over; when both lines were up, it did exactly what it was supposed to. The problem with the fail-over is that it frequently just didn't detect failure on the failed line the way it should... even when I had it ping a server of mine on the internet for failure detection, it would still all too frequently leave a failed line "up" until I manually disabled it while the ISP sorted themselves out. Still, if you're willing to occasionally log in and manually disable a failed line until it comes back up, it gets the job done. And the regular routing features were superb and complete; everything from static routes to service routing (scheduled or non), port translation as well as forwarding, you name it. I finally retired the unit after a lightning strike took it out, because I'd bought a house in a newer neighborhood where the cable was reliable enough to fall back to only paying for one ISP.

Great Product,
This review is from: Xincom XC-DPG502 Twin WAN Router (Personal Computers)
This has been a great router. I retired my Netgear product for this one and I have never regretted it. The interface might be a little rough if you don't know much about networking, but other than that I have no complaints.

Had to reinstall the original firmware although I hadn't done anything to it?? Not a fan of just 45 days tech support either. Now that its working I'm pleased. Not for faint hearted non geeks.
