Xoe thought her life was normal. She believed her best

friends Lucy and Allison were both human. That all changed

when a new kid named Dan comes to their school. Lucy and

Allison thought he was just a pretty face but Xoe had her

suspicions. Everything changed one night after Lucy was

scratched by Dan and the next thing they knew "normal" was

no longer in their vocabulary. Before they could even

grasp the situation Lucy was a werewolf, Dan was a

werewolf and there was a vampire in town. Jason, the

vampire, was sent to help protect everyone from Dan and

together realize that nothing was ever normal. Especially

when Xoe finds out that she isn't human.

Xoe was one of those books that you think is just another

werewolf/vampire book. That observation changes as soon as

you begin reading. This book has everything I look for in

a novel: action, adventure, fantasy and romance. I would

reccommend this book to anyone who likes a good fantasy

novel and anyone who likes the Twilight Saga. Xoe is one

of those characters that you remember and want to see her

in a happy ending. I love how the author makes Xoe

vulnerable yet strong. I loved this book and I am happy to

be able to add this book to my bookshelf. I can't wait to

read more from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review by BOOK MONSTER REVIEWS, January 11, 2012
This review is from: Xoe: or Vampires, and Werewolves, and Demons, Oh My! The First Novel in the Xoe Meyers Young Adult Fantasy/Horror Series. (Paperback)
My Review (By Jessica G. - Book Monster Guest Reviewer)

This book follows Alexondra Meyers, a high school student in Shelby, Oregon. When Alexondra, whose friends call her Xoe, begins another year of school, she and her friends meet Dan, a new kid at school. Xoe feels something is wrong with Dan but her best friends Lucy and Allison do not agree. Xoe, Lucy, and Allison hang out one weekend with Dan. He acts strange toward Xoe when her friends are not around, telling her he can "smell her" and wants to know "what she is." Xoe has no idea what he is talking about and brushes him off. That night on the way home, Dan scratches Lucy. Lucy gets scared and goes right to Xoe, telling her Dan had claws. Xoe begins to think that Dan is a werewolf, though Lucy and Allison are skeptical. Then they meet Jason, who just transferred to their school. They befriend him, though Jason has a few secrets of his own. Xoe is determined to find out both Dan's and Jason's secrets and find out whom she really is.

It is a very fast read, keeping the reader intrigued throughout. Xoe is a great lead character as she is relatable to young girls. Her friends, Lucy and Allison, are also terrific characters as they both have very different personalities from Xoe. Any girl could connect with at least one of these characters. This would make a great tween book. As the first book in this series it sets a great opening narrative for what is to come in future books.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars My Students Loved this Book!, August 30, 2011

I REALLY enjoyed this book! I read it to my 6th grade students and it was a hit. Even though I, as an adult, found it exciting, humorous, and creative to boot, it seems to be like the best new thing for 'tweens'. I shared it with my fellow teachers who also read it to their students. We finally had to order some to put on our classroom shelves for reading. I just had to share what a resource it has been to get our students WANTING to read!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, But Feels Too Familiar, August 20, 2011
This review is from: Xoe: or Vampires, and Werewolves, and Demons, Oh My! The First Novel in the Xoe Meyers Young Adult Fantasy/Horror Series. (Paperback)
When I received Xoe: Vampires, and Werewolves, and Demons, Oh My! through the First Reads program at GoodReads, I was thrilled. I am always looking forward to a new (to me) book/author. And Xoe looked like it could be the start of a cool new series.

Xoe was an interesting character. She was funny and snarky and seemed like a wise-beyond-her-years girl. Her dialogue, both inner and verbal, had me laughing and shaking my head. I'm sorry to say, though, that for me, she was the only character that I could really get behind. The other characters didn't demand my attention like Xoe did. Which reminds me, character reactions to insanely weird events. Either I was a extremely dramatic, over-reactive teenager or am tragically out of the loop, but if I encountered a werewolf, vampire or demon in real-life, I would be running myself straight to a therapist or checking to see if my friends spiked the punch. The reactions of Xoe and her friends just didn't add up, in my opinion.

Although I didn't love or agree with all aspects of the book, I will say that it did hold my attention and I did actually like reading Xoe. Here's the problem. I felt like I had read this book before, a lot of times before. Either the girl is new to town or meets a guy new to town. Weirdness ensues. The girl learns about a part of herself she never knew existed. She is determined to uncover the truth. To be fair, perhaps that is my problem, not the book's. I just don't know. And, hopefully, the second book, Accidental Ashes, will help set this series apart from the rest.
