I have played DW4:XL for a solid day now, and I must confess that, wow, this is tough!
After complaints of the difficulty of DW3:XL, I thought that KOEI had given in to das man, and DW4 seemed much easier than either of its predecessors. In fact, I could (and did) play through the game on hard level with EVERY character, starting with INITIAL stats. No more, though, heh heh
If you didn't like the first XL, don't bother with this one. The Archers have returned and are as cheap as ever, and charged officers can lay even the best players low in a matter of seconds. Still, for those who enjoyed DW3:XL, you'll find a lot here.
Each character has a "Legend" mode, which is one level devoted to that character alone. I was quite happy with these in general (e.g. Jiang Wei must hold off the Wei army while keeping his stupid emperor, Liu Chan, from surrendering the city; Lu Xun attempts to navigate Zhuge Liang's Stone Sentinel Maze, fighting off the ambushes and traps along the way). The player is rated on how well he does during the level, and higher ratings (I think) can net new (level 11) weapons and higher level items. But man, is it tough!
Also, an extreme mode has been added. Here a player chooses one character and (with initial data and weapon) must survive a series of fictitional "Missions". There are no meat buns or the like to be found on these levels; you must buy such items with the points you accumulate during your travels. This mode is pretty fun, but I found it a tad too easy for my taste.
Of course, you can load old DW4 data and play through Musou and Free modes, but the real fun here is the "Legends" mode. The 42 new levels alone are worth the price of admission, IMHO.
BUT, if you were frustrated by the ridiculous difficulty of the previous XL ofering, DON'T BUY THIS ONE! No shame; at times, I wonder if expert difficulty is meant for fun or suffering myself!

KOEI has done it again. They have managed to upgrade another Dynasty Warriors game into a masterpiece. This XL upgrade is wonderful. With XL all of the characters and boards are unlocked for you, so if you still have not unlocked some, this will do it for you. There are different modes to play with that were not on XL 3.

There is a LEGEND mode, which each character has a limiting factor, and does a board which is a "reenacment" of their life. It is very interesting. You also have the chance of finding an 11th level weapon, which I have not done so yet.

The boards are much more difficult, if you thought XL 3 was hard, then you have seen nothing. The challenge is not in hacking and slashing, it is in the storyline. It changes everytime you play the SAME board. Keeping your superior officer alive is very difficult at times, and trying to keep your teams morale up, is even harder. Some boards need to be played with two players, especially if you are trying to obtain 10th level weapons.

The graphics are great, but the same as DW4. This upgrade makes for some long challenging hours in front of your television. I would recommend that you not have school or work before starting, because this game is addicting indeed.

First off, this game is a great addition to Dynasty warriors 4. I got it for Christmas and have been playing it pretty much non stop. The main attraction is the ability to get level eleven weapons although unless you have help from the internet and a buddy willing to join in then getting the weapons will be almost impossible. It's no walk in the park even with aid. Let me pass on a trick I learned from the internet. Set the difficulty level to expert(the level required to get the weapon) then quit and set the level to novice then start a new game. Hit start and select at the same time to quit without saving and then continue your original game. I tried this and it didn't seem to work at first but although the difficulty is not novice it is not expert either, the enemies are slightly less aggressive so you can kill them easier.

The second best thing about this game is the Xtreme mode where you get to roam the land finding items and killing random officers and recruiting others to join your band, buying items and food between levels to keep yourself alive. The best moment comes when you can claim a kingdom for yourself. It doesn't seem to do much for you though. It only gives you a discount on goods when you shop there. If I'm a king then I want all my stuff to be free. As with the rest of the game this gets very hard especially since there is a somewhat severe shortage of food(I once spent 11000 gold on a meat bun!) You will also have to defend your kingdom every once in a while(if you live that long)by keeping your officers from being killed.

All in all, this is a worthy purchase even if you don't have the original game. For me the Xtreme mode alone is worth the thirty bucks but you should definitely buy if you have the first game(although having to keep changing discs every time you want to play the first game with level eleven weapons is a pain)

Ah, the expansion to Dynasty Warriors 4, the first game that I ever used my PS/2 for.

In this, you'll find quite a bit new stuff:

The Legend Mode, where you experience a particularly important episode in the life of each playable character, from Guan Yu's doomed stand at Xia Pi (where he slaughters hundreds of foes), to Lu Bu's Defense of Hu Lao Gate (where he slaughters thousands of foes), to Sima Yi's desperate attempt to escape an ambush set by his enemies (where he slaughters hundreds of foes). There is a common theme here; not only does each episode center around one character (though they're open to two players, and that's often encouraged), but in most scenarios, if the body count hasn't reached 400 by the end, you're not trying. Then again, at least one demands that you not fight anyone. Most of the new items are available in these scenarios.

Also new is the Xtreme mode, which, for all intents and purposes, is a prototype Dynasty Warriors RPG. You go forth, smite your foes, take their stuff, and go and sell what you can't use for food and other supplies. It's rather fun, really; you can have smaller subquests, like defeating a monster (a playable character riding an elephant) or kidnapping another character for a villainous ally, and the choices you make determine how others view your character. The limiting factor to this mode is that food is in VERY short supply; while it'll occasionally drop from defeated officers or well-hidden pots, you mostly has to buy it from the store...which hikes the price of anything you buy based on how often you purchase it. So, that 600gp meat bun you'll see in the first session can reach up to 10,000gp in the 13th or 14th session. It's a pity that the food doesn't drop more easily; that'd help make it a much more fun mode.

Also included is a new all-dueling challenge mode. Also, the game has two new modes of difficulty...beginner, and extreme. The latter is meant to be used for obtaining 11th weapons, which are often worth the difficulty; they have higher power ratings (meaning more damage) and give you the benefit of certain items, which frees up item spaces.

All in all, this is a very nice expansion. I'm quite glad I bought it. If you enjoyed DW4 at all, be sure to pick this up.

KOEI, a game development company made famous by the addictively challenging Dynasty Warriors series, has spun yet another masterpiece based on the fall of the Han Empire in 200 A.D. This game is the eighteenth game based on the novel Romance of Three Kingdoms, by Luo Guanzhong. In this fascinating installment, there are three new modes of play, such as Xtreme Mode, which really makes use of your skill as a fighter. Though the gameplay itself may seem rather shallow, what most people who play this game don't recognize is this: Every action that your character takes effects the morale, and overall outcome of the battle. In this way, the game is deeply strategic, and should appeal to strategy gamers and gamers who simply enjoy hack-n-slash games. Proof of it's hack-n-slashedness; I once had the distinct pleasure of vanquishing over 3000 Nanman warriors in a single battle. Xtreme Mode tests your abilities as a gamer to a an exponentially increasing extent. Meat buns are a VERY rare site on the battlefield, forcing you to exercise caution when attacking your attackers. Additionally, you also have the option of recruiting not just special troops to your banner, but also officers as your bodyguards. And depending on what actions you partake in in battle your relationship with other CPU officers in the game will improve or deteriorate. Overall, this game is a huge improvement to the travesty that was Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends. This game is a must own for any gamer out there.

P.S: On September 14, Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires is going to be released. Think of it as half Kessen, half Dynasty Warriors, where you fight for your own personal control over China.

This is the best game ever. Whatever game that let's you fight as a chinnese warlord and fight other warriors. Also you canfight with different weapons. The best thing it isn't very hard and there is about 125 levels(actully 132). It took me about 30 minutes to beat each so you have anice long gaming expierence. Once that is over you can redo the levels in co-op mode or redo single player mode and get new fighters and weapons.

i have rented and played many DW games. I love how u usually go around and help your friends in need. I mostly have loved them because of the coop mode. In this u have 42 stages for legendz mode so you will probably be wrapped up in it for awhile. If I was looking for a good slash game i would get this one

This game is pretty fun, but if you're a Dynasty Warriors fan looking for a PS2 game, get the next entry in the series, "Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends". It has many more features and is one of the best games in the entire franchise. It has a great mini-RPG mode as well.

Ah, my 7th ROTK game ever. I still wonder now. Why do the enemies run to me after they see all their friends slaughtered in one attack, I would've run. Excellent graphics and extreme mode is sweet. I like to play Xtreme mode over and over and over. It would be better if it were multiplayer. Legend mode is nice, you get to do famous battles for each character,(Huang Gai's is so dang hard). Very nice, but is very limited in what you can do in 4XL. Now, how much will someone bet there is going to be a 5?

DW 4XL is very tough. If you could beat DW4 on the hard level easily, you would stumble over the XL on the hard level. XL also has a harder level above hard for you.

The graphic is great. The price is affordable. The game has two extra modes comparing the original DW4; extreme and legend modes. They are real fun to play. If you own the DW4, I think it is still worth to get the XL even though XL itself can't be considered as "DW5"!

I really enjoy the games (well, consider myself as romance of the three kingdoms fan) and I hope you would find it fun to play too.
