As a professional jeweler and metalsmith, I am very fussy about my tools. Of all of the wire cutters I've used over the last 30 years, I keep coming back to the Xuron Maxi-shear cutters. I now keep a half dozen in storage and 4 on my workbench, for my students are always "borrowing" my tools. I've managed to get 2 schools to keep these wirecutters on hand for students, and I will keep on bugging more schools to carry this cutter. Just easier to cut wire, less filing to do, and less effort to cut wire. I have very strong hands, but I frequently forget my students have weak hands, so these cutters makes it easy for all of us.

However, there is a limit - don't go past 12g. sterling or soft copper/bronze wire to cut, for I have broken 3 pairs trying to cut 10g bronze wire in the past 10 years. Try to avoid cutting steel wire, and it is best for sterling, fine silver, gold, platinum, copper, brass, bronze, nickel and nobium wire. If you want to cut steel or titanium or memory wire, use small bolt cutters or cutters designed for those wires.

Another unexpected bonus - these cutters are the best for cutting plastic cable ties. I do trade shows and high-end craft shows, so I have to use a lot of cable ties to secure my lights and booth framework. These Xuron Maxi-shear Flush Cutters cut thru plastic like butter and I frequently keep a pair in my handbag ( I know, I'm complusive) but it does make life easier.

If you are going to buy wire cutters, just save your energy and time, and buy these Xuron Maxi-shear Flush Cutters.

I recently got into chainmail and needed a flush cutter for making rings. These shears work great when cutting soft wire like copper or aluminum. Would no cut stainless steel though. Makes a clean cut on one side only. If you need a two sided straight cut, these will not work.

I use these shears largely for trimming wire and sheet solder.
Because of their special spring hinge, it is the most gentle cutter, producing excellent and precise cuts.

By "gentle" I mean that the tiny snips of solder don't go flying all over the place when I snip them off. This is very important since I'm working with precious metals.

The blades will seem comparatively vulnerable as opposed to a tool from a hardware store, and I do not use them for wire over 18ga in order to prolong the life of the cutting edge.
But they do wear out, and I do buy them again and again because they are super sharp, and the spring hinge is perfect for my application.

These Xuron shears do not cut like a diagonal plier. These actually shear (the sharp edges overlap slightly to finish the cut)leaving a smooth edge. (Diagonal cutters leave a tappered edge that requires filing or grinding to make the edge square.) This is a hefty "Flush Cutter." I'm a model railroader, and flush cutting is important in model building.

As a side note, please do not laugh. (If you must, don't inform me.) I have thick toe nails, and the commercial clippers are very hard to use, since I'm 78 and not all that physically fit. Well, I discovered these Maxi Shears work wonders, and they are very precise and require very little strength to cut. At the price of this product, I would recommend them as premium toe-nail clippers. Easy to use, and in most cases, lower priced than the so-called premium brand toe-nail clippers.

I bought these through Amazon then forgot that I ordered them. I went to small electrical nation-wide chain and bought their wire cutter, and then the next day my Xuron came in, so I put them both to work. The other one was no good after a couple of cuts, even my kids said it's a piece of junk. The Xuron, however, is fantastic. It cuts through several wires at once with ease and gives a nice, smooth, flush cut without mashing or distorting the 20 gauge and 18 gauge soft wire.

My kids and I enjoy making jewelry with chain mail and wire-wrapping, so I'm ordering a second pair. We've taken classes and bought several books and magazines on the subject; the most informative and insightful have been two books by Scott David Plumlee (Chain and Bead Jewelry Geometric Connections: A New Angle on Creating Dimensional Earrings, Bracelets, and Necklaces & Handcrafting Chain and Bead Jewelry: Techniques for Creating Dimensional Necklaces and Bracelets. He explains how to get a flush cut on both sides of the jump rings and his explanation of how to do the Byzantine chain was the best.

I use these for cutting pieces of plastic models off of the sprues. These are hands-down the best cutters I've ever used. Cuts are very clean and it doesn't take much effort. Highly recommended.

07/11/2013 UPDATE

I've been using these for over a year now and they are still as sharp as the day I bought them. I am storing them in the cardboard when not in use and that seems to be helping them stay sharp. Again, these are the best cutters I've ever used and they are worth every penny.
