Versatile machine!,

This review is from: Xyron XRN510 Creative Station Multi-Use Crafting Machine with Permanent-Adhesive Cartridge (Kitchen)
I bought the Xyron 510, because it is easy to use and takes several types of cartridges. Any flat item up to 5" wide can be put through it. The crank turns smoothly (more so than the Xyron 500) and all the adhesives are acid free.
I have used the permanent adhesive cartridge to make stickers for my scrapbooks. I have also used the 2-sided lamination cartridge to laminate all of my recipe cards- very helpful, since they are likely to get dirty. Lastly, I have also used the single-sided lamination cartridge to make waterproof labels for handmadfe gifts (such as my home-made vanilla). I haven't yet tried the magnet-making cartridge, but all the ones I've used have worked quite well.

I made my own wedding invitations, where different papers needed to be attached to different backgrounds and using the Xyron 510 made a huge difference in the success of my invitations. Everything got attached well and stayed there. I have since then used it for many other craft projects, in particular for scrapbooking and cardmaking.

Not quite what I expected...,

I had heard that the Xyron is a good sticker making machine for scrap booking so I asked for one for Christmas. I ended up getting two units, the Model 510 and the Model 900. To my surprise I use them both quite frequently and for many different projects around the house, not just scrap booking. They are so easy to use and versatile. My favorite is making personalized labels on the computer and using the Xyron to make them sticky. No need to spend money on label forms or fighting to get them lined up just right. With the the Xyron you print out what you like and cut it to the size you want. So easy!!

Uniquely versatile niche tool,
This review is from: Xyron XRN510 Creative Station Multi-Use Crafting Machine with Permanent-Adhesive Cartridge (Kitchen)
As a professional artist, I was somewhat reluctant to buy this product for professional use. I have a Royal laminator, which serves me fine and has outlasted inferior laminators I've seen other artists use. I needed something that could create magnets and other promotional material on a small scale.
Totally met my expectations and then some. Granted, as many other reviewers have been mentioning, the supplies can get quite costly if misused. However, Xyron fills a niche where no other product remotely comes close. The machine is idiot proof, with clear guides and a cartridge based system that's similar to putting in an old nintendo or atari game. The cartridges are clearly labeled, to prevent you from destroying something which you wanted to be a sticker but is now a permanent decal, etc. There is a wide array of cartridges from permanent adhesive (suited to crafting and creating collages, even bumper stickers), repositional adhesive (ie: stickers), double laminate (haven't used this but it's for lamination obviously), and magnet/laminate (which actually DOES make working magnets). The cartridges can be removed at any time when not in use and stored for later use. You can switch projects without burning the rest of your cartridge just to move on to something else. I find this model is perfect for collectible stickers, business card magnets, magnet toys (like fridge words), collages, banners, and decals. I would recommend an electric laminator like Royal for more durable, long lasting lamination. The Xyron is better tailored for all the rest, rather than strict lamination.

Received this product and immediately was able to use it. Easy set up. Makes stickers out of most thin items. I also purchased the laminated/sticky sided insert. It is fabulous--one caution, watch how close together items are put through the machine. The items can clump together. Overall I am very happy with this product.

I really like this sticker machine. My only gripe is that it wastes so much of the 18' each time you run something through to apply the adhesive and when you pay a dollar a foot and you waste almost 3 inches each time you use it, the 18 feet isn't going to last very long and you will need to reorder another roll. This makes me hesitant to freely use it on all my cutouts from my CRICUT EXPRESSION without thinking about it and I don't like to think.

I love this machine. I have all the Xyron makers for doing card making. My only gripe is that there is a waste factor of several inches on each run through the machine. If they could resolve that I wouldn't have an unkind thing to say.

I love the simplicity and the versatility of this tool. No batteries, no power plug...just insert the type of cartridge (laminate, adhesive, moveable adhesive, magnetic) and you can make all kinds of things. I bought the tool to make menu cards and seating charts for my wedding...and it worked wonderfully. I've not been a crafty person in the past, but this makes me want to make all kinds of things - no more going to Office Depot or Kinko's to get things done...I can do it at home!
I found it a little difficult to know exactly where to cut my finished product. If you wait until it's clearly through, you end up wasting almost an inch on the item you just made AND the next thing you make. In trying to not waste, I ended up pushing through things one after the other and on more than one occasion I overlapped on accident. Once you screw it up, it's not exactly easy to undo. I absolutely recommend it, though. Picture magnets will be my next Christmas gift thanks to this handy-dandy tool! :)

Indispensible for crafters - really handy for everyone else!,

We had to create some really intricate pieces made up from about a dozen different sections, some hand-cut, others with a Cricut. At first we tried a glue stick - dried out and things fell apart a few days later. Then we used the sticky roll dispensers. Worked great, but was a pain on small, intricate pieces - plus really expensive. Then we saw this 5" Creative Station. Wow - what a difference! It applies the glue to the bottom of whatever you stick in it. I tried business cards and photos - fantastic. Then it came time for the really intricate cut spirals. For the larger ones we could put in three side-by-side. For the smaller ones, five across. One problem we had - after using the thing a few times it developed a static charge. When we inserted the smaller cut-out pieces of paper, they clinged to the upper portion of the feed slot. I had to use tweezers to place them just right. After the first few I got the hang of it and it went fast.
The glue stuck only where it was supposed to except where there were small gaps - there the glue spanned the space. When the items exit the device, they are in a pouch - backing on the bottom and a cellophane type material on top. We took a rounded toothpick and outlined the details before removing the top. This made the excess glue stick to the top cellophane - and all the detailed pieces came out clean. It's easy to use and affordable - plus Amazon has the best prices on supplies!

Failed gift,
By
This review is from: Xyron XRN510 Creative Station Multi-Use Crafting Machine with Permanent-Adhesive Cartridge (Kitchen)
My wife is really into scrapbooking. So I thought I'd get her this as a gift. Total fail. On her first try with it, the material curled up in the machine and gummed up the works. As she tried to un-gum it, the bracket that holds the top roller broke - just the little piece that goes around the roller end. And Xyron does not sell replacement parts. Now the whole machine, along with all the cartridges I got her, are useless. All because they used cheap, brittle plastic in even the most likely places to break.
This was frustrating to use, didn't last long, and made an enjoyable activity un-enjoyable. Maybe I should search online for broken units to scavenge replacement parts. |
