Editorial Reviews

Once again, a brilliant representative of the French musical scenes of the Eighties ! Starting where HENRY COW or ETRON FOU LELOUBLAN had left, HELLEBORE use this unique album to present their music made of audacious counterpoints, large and mastered instrumentations (bass, crumar, saxophones, guitar, percussion, pianos, organs) and of a voice that sings pataphysical themes that sound like masterpieces of a Monthy Python’s kind of nonsense! Previously under AYAA, Gazul keeps on re-issuing the bands included on this fabulous and regretted label that had given the opportunity to discover a large number of those original talents of international New Musics. Hellebore’s experiences are to be classified in the Rock In Opposition style and the experiments of those musical inventors that remind of Chris CUTLER, Fred FRITH and other LOOK DE BOOK, impress the listener due to their density, their complexity, but also thanks to their ingenuous and not too serious side. A real freshness !

4.0 out of 5 stars rare piece, worth the work to get, April 14, 2006
This review is from: Il Y A Des Jours (Audio CD)
This is a rare item that originated in the mid 80s, not easy to get, if you do get it be happy. This is the more kinda "avantgardish" prog in the school of Magma (french band as it is, though not a Zeuhl band), Univers Zero and Egg. I think they succeed quite well to create a good sound of their own even though it's quite easy to spot influences like those mentioned. To withstand it one can say that the tunes get a little too pretentious at times and the ideas seems to pour out into some rather dull improvisations or "noises" of more or less ignorable characther. But the overall piece stands well and doesn't get too boring. As for originality it doesn't come up to the Zeuhl bands heights, but it does by far surpass the predictable prog rock and it gets really interesting most of the time. You will most likely not repeatedly listen to this album, but if you're into the styles named you need to get it.
