Book Description

January 4, 1999
Y2K. You May Know Of It, you may have even chosen to ignore or deny it, but there's no way you can avoid it. On January 1, 2000, the billions of computer chips encoded to mark years in double digits will roll over to "00" -- a technological glitch that may be felt on every level of society. Victor R. Porlier, former Chief of information Development in the State Departments Agency for International Development, and a noted expert on Y2K for years, arms you with the survival strategies you'll need to feed your family, maintain health, care, access your cash, preserve investments, and cope with the coming utilities and transportation crises. Don't get stung by the millennium bug!
-- This is the only Y2K book on the market that features practical, down-to-earth advice for the average consumer on dealing with the imminent crisis.
-- Y2K contains comprehensive and detailed checklist that consumers will need in order to protect themselves.
-- The author is a leading expert who, in the 1960s, oversaw design of new software applications for IBM mainframes.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

If you are looking for a best work presenting the worst-case scenario about to befall the world January 1, 2000, look no further than Porlier's sobering and quite frightening summary of survival strategies designed to help folks prepare for what he sees on the near horizon, the total meltdown of all technology dependent on computers that cannot handle the Y2K four-digit date. Porlier is the former chief of information systems development for U.S. AID and is now touring the country, advising government and other officials on how to prepare for the disaster. According to the author, worldwide, folks will experience loss of all power, no public water or sewage treatment, no telephones, no public transportation, as well as possibly no functioning personal vehicle and no food supply. His survival strategies include stockpiling potable water and food, preparing for alternative sources of heating, planning for sanitation with no available water, personal protection, and transferring personal assets into usable currency, preferably coins. Recommended for all public libraries.ADale Farris, Groves, TX

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!, April 23, 2000
I loved this book. I think I'm going to collect these things. I bought it around March 2000, and it has replaced 1984 as my favorite book of all time. A must read! It's not too informative, but what the author lacks in knowledge and technical expertise he more than makes up for in pure humor. Of course, He wasn't trying to be funny, but that's only a minor failing...

Once again we have another person that knows very little about computers or the industries they run coming out with a book of the impending doom. Mr. Polier lacks the basic technological background to seperate fact from fantasy so he's at the mercy of the few "experts" he talked with.

Though his concerns may be sincere, there are better books out there by people that have a much better grasp of the real situation.

Very funny! I can only imagine how stupid the people who shelled out money for this must be feeling right now. But Jesus, how braindead would you have to have been? I mean, REALLY: "staying warm?" "accessing cash?" "Coping without utilities and transportation?" Come ON! Do you people ever take it into your heads to actually THINK about something before mindlessly jumping onto the ol' bandwagon of mass hysteria? Good lord, that's amusing.
