5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
I loved this book. I think I'm going to collect these things. I bought it around March 2000, and it has replaced 1984 as my favorite book of all time. A must read! It's not too informative, but what the author lacks in knowledge and technical expertise he more than makes up for in pure humor. Of course, He wasn't trying to be funny, but that's only a minor failing...

Once again we have another person that knows very little about computers or the industries they run coming out with a book of the impending doom. Mr. Polier lacks the basic technological background to seperate fact from fantasy so he's at the mercy of the few "experts" he talked with.

Though his concerns may be sincere, there are better books out there by people that have a much better grasp of the real situation.

Very funny! I can only imagine how stupid the people who shelled out money for this must be feeling right now. But Jesus, how braindead would you have to have been? I mean, REALLY: "staying warm?" "accessing cash?" "Coping without utilities and transportation?" Come ON! Do you people ever take it into your heads to actually THINK about something before mindlessly jumping onto the ol' bandwagon of mass hysteria? Good lord, that's amusing.

My son encouraged me to read this prior to the Y2K thing. It was interesting and I did some preparation such as water, candles, and a full cupboard. But, basically, I found this to be a little too radical for my taste. Of course, when 1-1-2000/1-1-2001 passed, I felt a little smug when compared to my friends who were a wreck about "what could happen" if all the computers crashed, etc. If you are into being self sufficient, read it. Otherwise, pass it on to someone else who can tell you about it when they are done.

2.0 out of 5 stars Short of trying to create chaos, April 13, 1999
By A Customer
This book coverd alot of topics to the point of becoming outlandish and almost alarming. The follow through research was weak. This book was written for a "Misery Loves Company" society. Look for something more realistic!

4.0 out of 5 stars Contains simple, straightforward, useful information., March 5, 1999
By A Customer
I recommend this book to anyone with concerns about Y2K. It contains simple, straightforward, easy-to-use information arranged in an easy-to-navigate format. Included are lists of a variety of survivial materials and supplies from foods, clothing and bedding to medicines, repair materials, heating supplies, and so on. These lists would be useful for many other kinds of emergencies and would help in disaster preparedness. I plan to buy copies for my family members.

1.0 out of 5 stars weak for a consumer guide, February 19, 1999

Not impressed. There are better resources out there than this one. Found it too general to be really useful. Keep looking.

This book is a balanced, reasonable approach to planning for emergencies. It is very readable with many positive and practical recommendations and checklists. I am ordering over 100 copies for distribution throughout our companies.

Mr Porlier's book offers a brief overview for the layman who knows little. Unfortunately, there are still many people who are completely oblivious to this impending problem; And unfortunately, these are the people who will, most likely, exacerbate this problem when Jan. 1, 2000 finally arrives and the ignorant are not prepared. He introduces peacful strategies for dealing with the uninitiated and unequipped among us (and there will be many) like bartering and services rendered in exchange for food and other necessities. Most of us, children of the computer age, have no idea what life would be like without technology and regardless of the differing opinions of those supposedly 'in the know', we should all be prepared!
