Editorial Reviews

With the Y4K series establishing itself at the forefront of ‘breaks’ compilations, Distinctive have decided to broaden the horizons ever so slightly by embracing the sound of Phil K. No stranger to the Australian breaks scene Phil K has been around for many years and has always been on the cutting edge of electronic music. Phil K’s production and mixes have been embraced world over by the likes of Sasha, Dave Seaman, Lee Burridge and Anthony Pappa to name but a handful.

Phil K has put together an eclectic mix that ranges from subtle progressive textures to mashed up guitars to dancefloor fillers, none of which seem out of place as they sit next to each other in the mix. Phil’s tracklist is a true testament to the sound that he has championed since the beginning of his career. A mix that features tracks from Habersham, Tiga, Agoria, Warp-esque Aussie breaks favourite Andy Page and even Phil K himself. This is an intelligent, well thought out and impressively produced mix that is a notably worthy addition the Y4K series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Solid Mix, July 7, 2005
This review is from: Y4K (Audio CD)
I have to agree with the last reviewer and say that this album deserves way more than just one little star. Phil K. delivers a solid mix here and unlike some others that claim it, this is a true "progressive" mix.

The first half of the set broods and thumps with a hint of the menace to come. Rhino Drum comes with a real moody one pushing out a bass line and scratchy vocal sample that fills you with dread. The second half builds up with some real loud thumpers and none of the "dissonate" sounds mentioned in one review (although the guitar in the last track is a little annoying, hense 4 stars instead of 5). Son of the Electric Ghost kick some funky robot breaks and the F.A.R.T. remix of NuBreed's "To Know" builds a monster of a hard hitting track.

This is a solid entry into the never disappointing Y4K series. Rock on Phil.

4.0 out of 5 stars I don't know why you guys hate it so much, July 6, 2005
This review is from: Y4K (Audio CD)
This CD is not terrible, get your heads out of the gutter, or open your mind just a little. If you are looking for an album with tight ass breaks mixed flawlessly, then this is a great set. If you like his set from Dave Seaman's Therapy Sessions you should like this! The Therapy Sessions track selection is a little better, which is why i gave this 4 stars, but it's still a must hear. if you are a fan of Phil K then you should not miss out on this. I honestly do not think this album deserves 1 star. This is his style, and the songs kick. I have listened to it plenty of times and it's really grooving. From dark funky breaky beats to some great breaky vocal sampling tracks. Try it! I know I'm not the only one that thinks this. I play this CD in my living room when I have people over sometimes and everyone loves it and always asks, "Who is this? It's so tight." PHIL K I say! ;D

4.0 out of 5 stars Stop being spoon-fed cheesy formulaic crap PLEASE!, February 28, 2006

This Y4K offering from Australia's Phil K isn't close to legendary, but it is a good solid mix. I'll say it like it is: many people won't know GOLD if it was right in front of their eyes. Just like any other DJ mix that tries to break out of the FORMULA and set higher standards, this one will be frowned upon by the people who have the audacity to call themselves discerning "music lovers". Yes, music is a very subjective experience, but please reserve your judgement if you don't have any idea about what you're critiquing or only have vacuous rhetoric to contribute.

This mix is a wonderful example of where dance music is going. It starts off with an amazingly detailed and forward-thinking breaks track from America's producer, Lusine and mixes quite well into Habersham's 'Song Of The Lizard. Habersham (aka Tech Phunk) is another up-and-coming American producer who shines brightly among the new breed of talent in electronic dance music. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION! These tracks are not your classic formulaic 4/4 sound or even your classic funky/nu-skool breaks sound. These are actual SONGS that tell a story! Pay close attention to elements like "groove" and "rhythym" and you'll FEEL how deep and funky they really are.

Another great example is "Devil's Logic" by Son Of The Electric Ghost (aka, SOTEG). People are too used to being spoonfed the same formulaic breakbeat sound championed by people like DJ Icey, Rennie Pilgrem, Baby Anne, Koma & Bones, etc. I'm not neccessarily looking down on those people, but do realize that this sound is way beyond that. This is techno(logical) music. Please learn to grow & adapt or stop the pretense of being an avid "techno" listener. Don't complain about it because you happen to lack the patience or understanding to realize how incredibly "precise", unique, and funky tracks like Song Of The Lizard, To Know, and Serpent (all are my personal faves.) really are. The whirlwind of storming beats, the hard-hitting snares, and the twisted melodies are all relatively fresh new innovations that kick it up a few notches. I'll be honest. I fail to grasp how some people just don't progress in their tastes year after year!

Just have some patience and keep and open mind. Listen to it a dozen times and put down your guard. This mix isn't perfect, but many of the tracks in it are very close to perfection! Listen to how the musicians make a logical "grrove" & "rhythym" out of abstract noises & sounds. You'll disover something familiar in it. I promise. Be relentless and explore!
