Book Description

October 9, 2006 Lookit! (Book 2)
Adventure! Humor! Silly hats! In this tale, some pirates are cranky over the cancelation of Pirate Wednesday, their only opportunity to sell Pirate-Cookies. Can Vice-Penguin Mellville save the day? Probably. Interspersed are stories of Captain Cautious, the timid superhero in The Kungfu Tofu Snafu, and Tbyrd Fearlessness and his search for fame, glory and lunch. Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Following A Cheese Related Mishap (2005), Friesen delivers the second volume of the Lookit! humor anthology, featuring the story of Melville, the clever but lazy penguin. This time Melville and company become embroiled in a race to find enough gold to pay the rent on the castle of Pellmellia, hoping to help the cheese-loving king beat a group of silly, cookie-obsessed pirates. Other, shorter stories include a piece about a character named Captain Cautious and a sepia-washed western parody about two out-of-work birds. There is one problem: Friesen's humor tends toward younger readers, while his language and ideas seem better suited to a more sophisticated audience. The art, however, ranges so widely (from digital Claymation to outright cartoons) that the pages remain visually engaging throughout, and the humor comes at a furious pace, with sometimes four of five jokes crammed into a single panel. Lots to look at here. Jesse Karp

More About the Author

Ray Friesen is currently 24 years old, but if you read this in the future he might not be anymore. (if you're reading this in the past, Time Travel High Five!) Ray draws lots of silly things, most of which have penguins in them.

Ray has been drawing cartoons for pretty much his whole life, but has been a professional artist since the age of four (That was the first time he got paid for his art -- a wind energy company used a bunch of his cutesy animals and windmills drawings for their 'clean energy for everyone' campaign.)

Ray self published his first comic book at the age of 12, titled 'The Continuing Adventures of Raymond Q. Wonderful' the titular character of which bore a very similar resemblance to the author. When confronted with claims that he has an enormous ego, Ray will be the first to point out that he is writing this autobiography in the 3rd person. "I'm just great!" he has been known to quip, when feeling especially boisterous.

Ray was nominated for the 2003 Ignatz award for Promising New Talent ("the youngest person ever!" Ray claims, though has done no actual research to prove this.)

Ray has spent the past however many years trying to take over the world via stealth doodling. He does school visits, so if you are a teacher and would like Ray to chat with your kids, please get in contact, we'll see how feasible that would be! It helps if you live nearby where Ray lives, which is in Californialand.

Ray is very fond of hats, and has a rather impressive collection of them he will show off if you ask nicely. If you are thinking of buying Ray something for his birthday, hats, toy penguins, and chocolate are recommended. Hint hint.

If Ray had a personal/social life, he would probably talk about it in this paragraph.

Read more of what Ray has to say, and his weekly webcomic of the moment at his webular site, www.DontEatAnyBugs.com.

Or else!

3.0 out of 5 stars If you liked the first one..., October 10, 2008
This review is from: YARG!: Lookit! Comedy & Mayhem Series Book 2 (Paperback)
Ray Friesen, Lookit! Vol. 2: Yarg! and Other Stories (Don't Eat Any Bugs, 2006)

Friesen's second Lookit! installment finally finds its way to me. More of the same, as expected-- silly jokes, a hefty helping of comic convention awareness, and wacky goings-on. Some folks might find the humor a bit on the juvenile side, but I think we all need that sort of thing now and again. Good stuff if you're in the mood for silliness. ***
