Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Hauser's 28 books include suspense fiction, investigative journalism, and even a children's book. But his passion and stellar reputation rest largely on his writing about boxing. This collection draws from miscellaneous boxing journalism published in Boxing Digest and in various online publications. He opens with a fascinating portrait of Sir Henry Cooper, the British heavyweight who nearly ended the Ali legend before it began and has since become one of the most revered figures in England. Hauser also profiles boxers Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley, and Naseem Hamed. Hauser also analyzes the business of boxing with an excellent series of articles on HBO, Madison Square Garden Productions, and the relationship between boxing and television marketing. There are also fascinating pieces on a small promoter of club fights, boxing archivist Bill Cayton, and the resurgence of Everlast, the renowned manufacturer of boxing equipment. Hauser has been favorably compared to legendary sportswriter A. J. Liebling, the originator of the phrase "sweet science." It's an apt comparison. A special collection for fans of the best boxing literature. Wes Lukowsky

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book By Thomas Hauser, March 12, 2004

This review is from: YEAR AT THE FIGHTS (Paperback)
Another great book by Thomas Hauser

Thomas Hauser has to be the most humble writer I've ever read. He is incredibly knowledgeable and part of boxing, but never included himself or speaks of himself as part of the scene - as anything more than a writer -

I've enjoyed all the books I've read by him and I'm looking forward to reading more! - A Year At The Fights is another great example -

This is a great journey inside boxing. It's not a book recapturing and retelling all the fights of a year. It has some that, but this is a look inside boxing. The fights outside of boxers, outside of the ring and inside boxing as a sport and system.

The only thing I felt missing from this book was a scratch and sniff section to smell sweat and cigars.

It's a light read - an easy read and if you're a fan of boxing it's a book for you. All Hauser's boxing books are great. He has a great perspective on the boxers, the promoters, the business and everything in between...just ask his mother (inside joke after reading A Year At The Fights)
