Maine Old Cemetery Association Special Pub No. 1. 4 volumes, 832, 800, 800, 544pp. 107,277 entry Every Name Index. 1995.
For more than a quarter of a century since its organization in 1969, the members of the Maine Old Cemetery Association have worked diligently to record all of the gravestone inscriptions of Maine - truly a gargantuan task. Picton Press and MOCA have teamed up to bring to you all of the nearly one million inscriptions transcribed in Maine thus far - nearly as many inscriptions as the present population of the state.
York County, Maine, the state's original county and thus for many genealogical purposes its most important county, was chosen for the first publication. All sixteen Maine counties will eventually be published. Almost all cemeteries in York County are presented here, arranged alphabetically by cemetery with inscriptions arranged by lot and stone. The size of the index, 107,000 entries, says it all! From Sarah Orne Jewett to the most obscure youngster, if they have a gravestone in York County, most likely you'll find it here We will be bringing you all of the MOCA records over the next few years. Kennebec County is the next one scheduled in the series.
