Customer Reviews

This book is very informative but yet easy too read.

This is a great book for runners of all abilities looking to fine tune their training programs for multiple race distances from the 5k to the marathon.

I strongly recommend this book - it's a fairly quick read - for anyone who wants to feel better and get a more from their running.

This book looks promising, but it is hard to judge by the Kindle edition. Whole sections are missing; the charts are barely legible, and everytime the author begins to discuss something interesting... the next page turns out to be blank. I am hoping Amazon will refund/exchange my kindle copy for a print edition so I can actually read the book.

This is a great book for runners of all abilities looking to fine tune their training programs for multiple race distances from the 5k to the marathon. The book provides detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to build a customized training program for the individual runner and tailor it to each runner's strengths, weaknesses and time constraints. Base mileage, hills, speedwork, tempo, long run, and goal pace training segments are all provided, along with advice on how to schedule each specific segment and Greg's McMillan's general philosophies on running and training guidance. The book is concise and easy to follow, yet well written in a manner that connects with both beginners and more advanced runners. I've been an avid adherent to Greg's training philosophies since I began running and have PR'd every race distance and qualified for Boston multiple times using his advice and training programs. They work and have allowed me to build mileage, endurance and stamina while avoiding injury. I highly recommend this book (and McMillan's training philosophies generally) to any runner who follows McMillan Running or is looking to change-up or enhance their training program.

McMillan's fan should get print version because Kindle version can only be half read - pretty much a waste of the anthor's time and readers' money.

What makes this book different from all the other running books out there is stated clearly in the title. It's about helping runners run faster, not just a general book about running. But more important, it is about making YOU as an individual run faster. Greg has taken all the current research and added his and others' years of hands-on experience and put it into a framework that is adapted to the specific nature and needs of each individual runner. The framework is flexible enough to cover all distances as well as all ages and abilities. Virtually anyone can take this book in conjunction with Greg's online calculator and put together a program that will have them setting new personal records in a surprisingly short time. I have been following Greg's methods for years and can attest to their effectiveness. The workouts are challenging but fun, and there is a specific reason for doing each and every one of them. Greg is a very smart coach and there is a ton of science behind his approach, but like all great coaches he knows how to put everything in common-sense terms that anyone can understand. I recommend this book without reservation, and expect that it will go on to become a classic.

I have relied on McMillan's running calculator for quite a few years now. Based on my experience it estimates training paces and goal paces very accurate. Highly recommend using the calculator.

I was looking forward to this book by Greg, expecting interesting insights into training plans for marathons. But I haven't found anything new. Advanced Marathoning by Pfitzinger, Pete and Scott Douglas covers all aspects much more thoroughly.

Most runners cannot afford to pay a personal coach to create the" master plan" for their P R performance, for any distance. This book will help you be your own coach by helping you take any program out their and modify it to be suited to you, based on the type of runner you are. In addition, there were many links to McMillan's website ( for those of us who have a kindle fire) so you could pop right to the web page as you read the information in the chapter for a video demonstration of the concept or skill or correct pacing information.

a very good book for the advanced runner, who wants or need to make his own training plan.
in the kindle version the tables are not readable at all, the publisher should consider that and make a specific kindle version
