Book Description

October 5, 2010
There’s little doubt that parenting can be one of the most rewarding and satisfying experiences you’ll ever have. But it can be plenty tough, too: Around the clock, you’re working to keep your little one healthy, teach her the difference between right and wrong, and make sure none of her little fingers find their way to the electrical outlets, the dog’s nose, or grandpop’s cup of coffee. In YOU: Raising Your Child, Drs. Mehmet Oz and Michael Roizen, the New York Times #1 bestselling authors of the YOU health series, help you navigate the often tricky journey of parenting with the ultimate guide to raising a happy, healthy child.

Dr. Mehmet Oz—host of television’s The Dr. Oz Show—and Dr. Michael Roizen—chief wellness officer and chair of the Wellness Institute of the Cleveland Clinic—have sold millions of books informing readers about healthy dieting, aging, and overall health. Picking up where their prior book, YOU: Having a Baby, left off, the docs provide oh-wow information and insider advice to help parents understand the biology and psychology of raising a child from birth to school age.

With humor and cutting-edge biological insights, the authors address everything from troubleshooting infant health issues to creating an environment that supports the emotional and intellectual development of your growing child. They talk about the various approaches to parenting—are you a Marshmallow Mommy or an Iron Maiden, passive or hyperinvolved? The docs help you identify your style of parenting, encouraging passive parents to create clear boundaries and hypervigilant ones to step back more often and let their kids develop. You will learn to become the ideal parent: firm but flexible. The docs also provide an extensive overview of nuts-and-bolts health problems— from asthma to fevers to emergency room visits and the sensitive issue of vaccinations.

In YOU: Raising Your Child, America’s most trusted doctors, who co-host a daily Sirius/XM radio program for Oprah Radio, once again come to the rescue with wisdom about how to provide an enriching environment with the ultimate goal of raising a child with a healthy body—and mind. As the docs say in their introduction: “Our goal is to teach you how to create the optimal environment for your child—an environment that’s most conducive to your child thriving in all areas of life, physically, emotionally, socially, and developmentally. Why? Because the latest research shows us that the environment—as defined not only by physical space but also by the behaviors of parents and caregivers—is the number-one determinant of your child’s future.”

***

YOU: Raising Your Child offers a brand-new way to think about parenting. Imagine child development—and your child’s journey though life—as a ride down a long, often unpredictable river. You are the guide, there to control the direction and speed that you travel. For the fi rst few years of their lives, your children are your precious cargo—the passengers who take in everything they see and who learn from you how to paddle on their own. As the guide, you can control the path you take and the environments you choose to travel in—with the goal of creating a healthy and happy life for your child. Here’s just a sample of what you’ll learn:

• The mind relies on the environment to give clues and signals about how it’s supposed to develop and what it’s supposed to learn. Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz show you how to create the best learning landscape possible to help your child thrive.

• Breast milk provides the perfect concoction of nutrients to help protect your baby against infection, asthma, and many other conditions (it also burns 500 calories a day to help you lose that baby weight!). But if you aren’t able to breastfeed, we have plenty of tips on exactly what and how much to feed your baby to make sure that he or she is getting the best possible diet from day one.

• Get the truth about high fevers and learn the most accurate way to take a temperature (it’s not what you think!). You’ll also get insider tricks for handling everything from earaches to febrile seizures.

 • Whether your child is allergic to gluten or peanut butter, there are two dominant theories about why more kids have allergies today than ever before. YOU: Raising Your Child explains them and tells you unique ways to prevent and treat allergies in your child.

Our goal is for YOU: Raising Your Child to be the map that you need to safely navigate the waters of your baby’s life from day one to day 2,190, and in it we will give you all the tools you need to steer the best possible course.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This seventh volume in the YOU series (following YOU: Having a Baby) by Oprah's favorite physician-authors continues yet further dilutes the well-known brand. Apparently making full use of the data collected for the previous books, radio show, and Oprah programs, the book lacks structure and is uneven and scattershot, providing advice on a select number of not especially essential child health topics in chapters on the biology of infant education; child gastrointestinal issues; infectious diseases, allergies, and the immune system; and preventing childhood accidents and dealing with doctors and hospitals, thus forgoing the traditional structure of most parenting resources, which present information along developmental ages and stages. Some useful material may be found in a section entitled "YOU Tools," which features minimal hands-on instructions for diaper changing, interpreting infant cries, and the like; a number of short lists of required gear--but this section seems more an afterthought, a place to put all the good stuff that didn't fit into chapters. Although readers would expect the media star authors and the pediatric experts they recruited to create a real go-to guide, they will be disappointed, and the familiar, casual tone doesn't work. More About the Author

We wrote YOU: The Owner's Manual to help everyone understand that 70 percent of how long and how well you live is in your hands. But we wanted to go one step further and move you from just knowing the rules to really understanding how your body works. And we realized that if we bottled the 'eureka moments' and irreverence that medical school teaches, you might really enjoy the artistry of the inner workings of your body (we included cartoons so guys would understand). But The Owner's Manual was limited: folks whose lives were already touching the health care system needed advice to best navigate that serpentine path. We realized that a 'Smart Patient' was essential to realizing the promise of 'The Owner's Manual'. Luckily for us, the Joint Commission, our nation's health care safety advocate, approached us to help with a BIG problem. Medical errors in hospitals cost us 98,000 lives per year, and the Joint Commission could not squash this crazily large number without making all patients allies in this fight.

Being a Smart Patient means you've passed a stringent exam (well, a fun but informative quiz, anyway), and you know things that the vast majority of other patients do not. We learned a lot from this process of writing, and share all we knew beforehand and learned:
' You'll know why you need to include your spouse in your health history, even though there's no blood relation.
' You'll know why you should always be one of your doctor's first appointments of the day.
' You'll know which hospital staffer you should always talk to before choosing a surgeon (hint: it's the anesthesiologist).
' And you'll know why you should never touch the TV remote control in your hospital room.

The book debuted at #2 on the NY Times list, so some must at least like the jokes, or the cartoons (we understand an insurance company doesn't care for the one on page 333), or the insights combined with an encyclopedic list of trustworthy resources.

It's a scary statistic, but it's true: you have a 2 in 5 chance of being affected by a major medical complication in your life. And even the best doctors using the most cutting-edge technology can't prevent it. Yet that's the unrealistic expectation. The unsettling reality is that health care has become so complex it is no longer possible for any one doctor or other health care provider in the system to manage the whole process unless they have a partner. And that person is YOU.

The following insider tips are just a taste of those we crammed into You: The Smart Patient. We hope that this book will inspire and empower YOU to get involved in your health care.

Just the Facts, Ma'am

The first sign of a Smart Patient is that telltale document they produce during their first visit, or even their 50th. It's their health profile. This is the sign of a patient who means business, one who will challenge us to be at our absolute best and who won't waste time and money on redundant and unnecessary efforts. To create the perfect health profile, circa early 21st century, find the sample form labeled Your Health Journal. These forms are also online at www.jcrinc.com and www.realage.com.

Have a Tattle Plan
Bring your spouse or advocate to your doctor's appointment when you're giving your health history; there are a lot of questions that only he or she can answer. But, please, before coming in to the office together, make sure you discuss which fibs you're going to tell. Why? Because when you tell us that you've been taking your cholesterol-lowering drugs with the discipline of a Marine, your spouse will shoot you'or us'an involuntary look that communicates something close to Are you kidding me? We never miss it. And sometimes your spouse is trying to give your fibs away: it's called love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! October 11, 2010
Format:Hardcover
The YOU docs have done it again. I love the accessible approach and playful style that they can bring to any topic, even parenting. When so many of us are stuck in somber discussions about the most precious tasks of parenting, this book gives confidence and specific insights that rid us of the myths and mistakes that are often shared by friends and family. YOU Raising Your Child has become our family's textbook for basic parenting skills.

3.0 out of 5 stars Uneven January 20, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I can see why many reviewers like this book. It is easy to read, and contains useful information about certain topics. For example, the section on fever is informative and helped me figure out what was going on with my daughter, and when to call the doctor.
However, on certain other topics, it's only really useful as a jumping off point. For example, the section on sleep is only about 4 pages long, and attempts to cover sleeping issues from birth to 6 years old. For another example, the section on transitioning to solid foods does not include any useful information on how to wean from breastfeeding (or formula) after the 1 year mark, and does not even mention the baby led weaning approach, which is rapidly gaining in popularity.
I was considering returning this book, but Amazon's price was so inexpensive, I will probably just keep it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great baby shower gift! October 11, 2010
Format:Hardcover
This is a great book for parents of young children. It's not the most encyclopediac, but the information it presents is interesting and fun to read. Paired with a "What to Expect" or Dr. Spock it will be well used by parents who enjoy reading up on kids.
