Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3–7—Written to an elementary interest level, the word choices here vary greatly from nursery school (such as "poop" and "pee"') to upper middle school (such as "micronutrient" and "macronutrient"). While numerous cross-references direct readers to other pages for additional information, the text can be confusing as the parts of the page are neither well labeled nor organized linearly. While the text is well researched, with references listed by chapter, there is no bibliography. Cartoon line drawings appear throughout. The recipes have U.S. and British measurements, although the labels evaluated are U.S.-based, as is the terminology, such as names of vitamins and minerals. While allergies are addressed, food-related conditions such as diabetes and high cholesterol are barely identified or explained, and the recipes and meal suggestions do not always address these issues.—Sara Rofofsky Marcus, Yeshiva Har Torah, Little Neck, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, December 30, 2008
This review is from: YUM: Your Ultimate Manual for Good Nutrition (Paperback)
YUM by Daina Kalnins explores and explains nutrition and healthy lifestyles for pre-teens and kids, including how to get all of the vital vitamins every day, why eating junk food constantly isn't good, and how to keep your body healthy.

It's done in a way that's easy to understand and follow, making it simple for anyone to get a head start on a healthy lifestyle.

YUM is probably one of the best books I've read on nutrition. Usually, they're a chore to read and impossible to comprehend, but this one was different. It was written so that everyone can read it, not just those who understand doctor lingo.

Plus, it was full of interesting tidbits (did you know that dark chocolate is actually GOOD for you?) that made it much more fun to read. If you or somebody you know is looking to understand all things health-related, this book is the way to go.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to nutrition for teens, June 16, 2009
This review is from: YUM: Your Ultimate Manual for Good Nutrition (Paperback)
I thought this was a great manual for teens on nutrition. It covers everything you need to know from macro nutrients (like protein, carbs and fats) to micro nutrients (like vitamins and minerals.) Also included is how to read a food label, how to identify healthy foods and how food is processed throughout our body.

We get to follow the food from your mouth right through to when your body expels it. It's an interesting trip!

YUM is filled with fun facts and tips throughout and little quotes both from kids like you and from some celebrities.

Finally after learning all there is to learn the reader can take a pledge to eat better and then do a six month challenge to help you find and maintain your body balance.
