A Classic Bollywood Super Hit,
This review is from: Yaadon Ki Baaraat (DVD)
Vijay Arora is a superstar in this classic Bollywood 1970's hit movie with the famous song "Chura Liya" with Zeenat Aman and Vijay Arora. A must see for everyone of Indian heritage.

This film was made in 1973 which was a period when Indian film makers & musicians were doing a lot of experimenting, copying of western styles, and generally trying to find themselves. This film has elements of Elvis movies, hippie movies, gangster movies, you name it. Plus a couple of great songs. The acting is basically awful, the editing bites, the cinematography -arrgh ! It is NOT a good movie, but it IS entertaining.

I would never have known the existence of this movie had I not seen it previewed in a scene from Swades (Swades - We The People (2004 Shahrukh Khan / Hindi Film / Bollywood Movie / Indian Cinema DVD) where a village is treated to a travelling outdoor movie show, and the grand titles and theme of this movie was shown, along with the openning moments of Zeenat Aman's Chura Liya Hai Tumne..sung by Lata. I was so impressed by this that I bought the movie immediately, and was even more thrilled by the entire production.God knows what was happening in India when this movie was made, but there was no TV and this movie shows its still present enthusiasm for western culture (cars, music), Latin rhythms, and optimism of the first post-partition period. Other reviewers have said this is not a great movie, that it is not filmed well- but I beg to differ because there are SO MANY memorable scenes: the opening credits themselves; the entire first scene of the birthday with Aamir Khan as a child and the title song; the artist scenario and shooting; the escape and separation of the children; the early life of Dharmendra living on the street and the bonding with another young boy- And the classic memorable scene on a RR bridge where young Shankar morphs in a 360 deg. shot into the mature Dharmendra Shankar, and his stunt entrance - unforgettable! Then Dharmendra's ratty hotel room in cheap movie set furnishings is transformed by the concept of the scene with the drawing of the killer on the wall...the entire Blue Heaven Hotel sequence with the take off on the American band The Avengers with Ratan's guitar (Tariq) and the three actors Tariq, Vijay Arora, and Zeenat Aman in a musical stage number (Aapke Kamare Mein) along with the audience of young people singing along and dancing in this Hippy like late 60's re-cap of the American scene... and then shortly after the Chura Liya sequence with Zeenat and Vijay.... It is no wonder that the second half of the movie which brings the brothers back together seems less thrilling than the first half, it is so jam packed with fun and entertainment. But contiue it must as it marches forward in a dogged pursuit of justice, and family re-unification. A total entertainment binge.
