At long last we see the man who has been lurking in the shadows for the last six volumes. Ashina Dohaku reveals himself to be the true power in Aizu, and he will be the greatest threat the Hori Women will have to face.

This volume focuses almost completely on the villains, introducing Ashina Dohaku and spending a decent portion of the book telling us who he is and what he is all about. The good priest Takuan also plays an important role in this volume, but Jyubei and the women take a back seat for most of the book, only appearing at the beginning upon entering enemy territory, and again at the end, when they confront another Seven Spear in the forests of northern Aizu.

This is a very exciting volume, with many revelations and a few unexpected turns in the plot. The confrontation at the end is most satisfying. The art is beautiful as always -- the stage for the battle is very scenic, with flurries of snow and fallen leaves whirling about the combatants as they face off.

Volume 7 contains perhaps the most chilling moment in the series so far, even surpassing the ending of Volume 2. It takes the form of an innocent children's song ringing eerily in the background as the final two Seven Spears uncover the frozen body of their dead comrade, and the words of this song suddenly become coldly relevent to the dire situation the remaining Spears now find themselves in.

Four volumes left to go untill the end. This is a thrilling ride, one you cannot afford to miss.
