Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Web directories come in handy when you want to discover new Web resources without actively searching for a particular keyword on a search engine or subject tree. Yahoo! The Ultimate Desk Reference to the Web applies editorial judgment to the billions of Web sites out there, yielding a nicely annotated list that spans dozens of subject areas. Health, government, sports, news--it's all here. One really nice feature: the book lies flat at almost any page, enabling you to station the volume at your side as you use both hands on your keyboard. Having said that, you would expect a directory published under the Yahoo! brand to have a supporting Web site that would obviate the need to do manual URL entry. No such luck.

At certain points, it's evident that the contents of a Web site just don't translate well onto paper: "Sound Effects has, of course, numerous belches, as well as the requisite boings, bells, and bangs." Right. But, anyway, this book is worthwhile reading for days of idle surfing. It'll make your everyday Web experience certainly more enjoyable. --David Wall

Topics covered: A directory of Web sites, organized by subject area and then alphabetically. Subject areas include art, computers, entertainment, news, science, shopping, and sports.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yahoo! I can find everything, May 19, 2000
This review is from: Yahoo! The Ultimate Desk Reference to the Web (Paperback)
This book has about a thousand websites that it reviews, and it claims that these are the best of the best. It is actually pretty funny, too, for a reference book, and got me to look at sites I never would have thought to go to.

My husband bought me this book because I was always complaining that I hated wasting hours looking for stuff on the Internet. In just poking through it the past few days I have found dozens of great sites. I can't wait to explore some more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful . . . just ask my class!, June 9, 2000

This review is from: Yahoo! The Ultimate Desk Reference to the Web (Paperback)
I got this book to help my 5th grade class with surfing the Internet two weeks ago, and to help us prepare for our part of the school nature project (our part covered natural disasters). Not only did this book list sites on natural disasters but had sites on emergency preparedness and recovery for towns, as well as links to federal agencies and (of course) the best weather sites. We did the whole project using this book as our guide!

It also showed us how to get news updates for topics that the class is interested in (the my yahoo! pages), which helped get everyone involved in selecting how we would set up the page for the class. I'm already planning on using it for the first day of school next year.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who has to search for lots of research material--or just topics they're interested in. Yahoo!
