Book Description

July 4, 2004
The internet boom gave birth to a world where technology and easy money were the subject of most conversations. Nowhere was this more evident than the communities that formed around fiery online discussion groups hosted by web sites like Yahoo!. Though the boom ended, these online communities remain active and can still be a valuable source of investment information. However, you have to be able to sort the good information from the bad. Yahooting! Life and Death on an Internet Stock Chat Board by Alan L. McCann takes you inside these discussion groups to show you how to get the full benefit of the information that can be found there: How these groups work; Why they are fun, captivating, and frustrating, often at the same time; How to understand what the discussions are about; How to identify people's motivations so you can understand their biases; How to use the information to make more informed investment decisions. Using the real life Yahoo! chat board for a typical boom/bust public company, Ravisent Technologies Inc., this book will help you get an inside seat in these communities so you can make better investments.

About the Author

With over 20 years experience in technology industry experience in everything from large public companies to small startups, Alan has always been interested in exploring how new technologies can improve our lives. While in management roles at two public companies during the internet stock boom, he saw how investors participated in Yahoo stock chat boards while watching their favorite stocks prices soar (or not). Knowing that coverage of the boom and subsequent bust seemed overdone, there was still a story yet to be told in how the boom was viewed through the eyes of stock chat board participants. The result is this book, Alan's first.

Alan's career in the technology industry spans 20 years with early technology marketing, sales, and engineering experience at IBM and Xerox. More recently, Mr. McCann has held influential senior and executive management roles at global industry leaders and innovators such as ATI Technologies Inc. (ATYT), Ravisent Technologies Inc. (RVST), and Phoenix Technologies Inc. (PTEC). In each of these roles, Alan spearheaded industry changing efforts on behalf of his company including multimedia PC technology, 3D Gaming, DVD playback on PC's, low cost consumer electronic DVD players, and self-healing PC diagnostic software. Though born in Switzerland, Alan grew up in Canada and was educated at two of the top Canadian Universities. He received his MBA from the Schulich School of Business in Toronto and his Bachelor of Applied Science (Electrical Engineering, Computer Science) from the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

Alan currently resides with his family in Southern California and is involved with several technology startups in active or advisory roles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-read for Internet investors, August 17, 2004
This review is from: Yahooting!: Life and Death on an Internet Stock Chat Board (Paperback)
Before you even think of wandering into an Internet chatroom or message board looking for stock advice, read this book. It will help you interpret what is going on, understanding people's motivations and discovering the bits of truly useful information that may be out there.

This is far more than just an investment guidebook, however. It takes you through the real-life misadventures of a dot.com company, weaving a tale too tragic to be invented.

Stranger than fiction, for sure, but wasn't most of the dot.com boom?

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't venture in to stock chat boards without reading this!, January 30, 2005
This review is from: Yahooting!: Life and Death on an Internet Stock Chat Board (Paperback)
I didn't know what to expect when I first saw this book. In fact, I thought it might be aimed too much at the newbie investor.

However, I was pleasantly surprised in that it helped me round out my understanding of not only how to determine the useful from the merely entertaining in the chat rooms but also what went wrong with so many companies during the dot bust era.

I won't spoil the surprise at the end but it caught me off guard and also rounded out the story quite well.

My only complaints were that I hoped the author would have given a bit more inside information about what was going on at the company and that it was shorter than I hoped. I read it fairly quickly and it left me wanting more - perhaps there's a sequel in the works ;-)
