I will never just throw the skis in the back of the suburban again. This carrier is the BEST! It holds 5 pair of skis easily; 6 in a pinch. They are super secure when applied correctly; I didn't even have to adjust them tighter after the first road trip to Alta, Utah. They will stay in place all season long. I should have got this carrier years ago.

If it were based on looks, it would be 5 stars. The clamshell design is sleek and looks nicer than the Powder Hound or Flat Top. I have a 2012 Acadia Denali (for which Amazon claims these will not fit) with factory crossbars. Unfortunately, there are some caveats.

1. Only those with oval (factory) crossbars use the strapped feet like those in the picture. If you have round or square crossbars you use a different foot that snaps onto the bars directly.

2. The installation instructions list a MAXIMUM distance between your cross rails of 24" for ski's 167cm or below and 36" for above. Since the standard distance is 42" most will have to move their cross bars. For me this was no big deal, but for others it may be.

3. The latch mechanism seems like cheap plastic that could break easily, especially in the cold. There are 3 locking positions that you'll use depending on the number of ski's in the clamps. If you find the locks are hard to lock, it's because you are in too low of a latch position. That said, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with this thing in the top latch.

4. The manual isn't very good. It's mostly pictures and very few words. This carrier has a "ski lift" position which the manual fails to tell you why it would ever be needed nor do they explain the 3 latching positions. I had to search the internet to get this information.

5. Like one of the other reviewers, I had an issue with one of the feet straps not tightening. The thumbwheel is attached to a long bolt that's bridged across the base of the foot. One side of the bolt was not in its cradle. I had to remove the backing and adjust the screw to get it back into position. A good visual inspection would be to look at the topside; you should see the thumbwheel on one side and threads on the other. It wasn't hard to fix, but makes me wonder about Yakima's quality control.

I'm giving it 3 stars for now. After the season I may adjust it up or down a star.

I bought the Fat Cat 6 for my 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan. The cross bars have an oval type shape not retangular nor square. The instructions in the kit were clear but I still had to call Yakima 4 times to clarify things. I live in Portland Oregon as does Yakima so it was a local call. In the end I returned the unit to Amazon. The problem with the design of the rack is the way it is held to the bars. It is held using a plastic strap with a metal strap inside, that is surposed to be easy to tighten. It was not easy, almost impossible. Of the 4 straps I only got one to tighten all the way. The others were loose, which would of allowed the rack to rotate. As to the locks I also had problems in turning them with two pairs of skis mounted in the rack.

All information from Yakima said that this product would fit my 2000 Nissan Xterra . Call customer support and all information said that it would fit. It certainly does not. From customer support went to REI and they tried to fit it . No way.

REI then sold me another 50 bucks of Yakima mounting hardware , a universal roof mount. This also was a night mare. Finally I go to the Hardware store and get hardware to make it work. Rube Goldberg it now looks.

I should have returned the item, but was desperate. I dont believe anything they tell me at Yakima
Wish I could have been smarter and got my money back ...Sorry.

Bought this rack for my 2014 Outback. The rack fits fine and it looks slick. The lock is super aggravating to use. It's difficult to lock and unlock with skis in it. My fear is that I will not be able to get the skis out when I'm on the mountain. It's makes ski drop-off a challenge especially when it's really cold. I spend a lot of time trying to get it open with frozen hands. The wind noise also seems to be bad but I don't have anything to compare it to. Probably wouldn't make this purchase if I could do it over again.

This rack installs in minutes and required no tools. The innovative double hinge makes carrying all types of skis and boards very easy. The low profile design looks nice and minimizes both drag and noise. Well worth the little extra it costs for the great design.

The good:
- well designed to minimize highway wind noise
- accommodated 1 board and 3 sets of standard width skis. Might be able to handle 1 more set. But 3 max if they are all fatty powder skis.
- plenty of clearance for all bindings
- I have a 2005 Explorer with oblong cross rails. Able to get a tight fit with no movement after install. Even more stable with equipment loaded as your board/skis actually add to the stability.

The not so good:
- the bolts close to the hinge end are not long enough. I made it work, but, had to use slotted screw driver to force the rack strap clamp open to finish the strap connection. Was just barely enough bolt thread to allow the clamp to open to finish the strap connection.
- with all the equipment in the racks the lock assembly won't clamp down all the way. You have to clamp it down only to the first 1 or 2 notches in order to lock them with the key. This makes you feel like it isn't as secure as you would like and fear it opening while driving or easy enough for someone to force it open. It is still secure, just doesn't look like it.
- during the install it is a pain to have to keep holding the top bar up while struggling with the install of the strap connections at the hinge end.

Overall, I was very pleased with the performance after install. I took a 5 hr drive from Milwaukee to Upper Peninsula Michigan during severe sub zero weather and there were no issues. No lock freezing, no noise, no movement of the equipment.

I did a lot of research on alternatives before buying these and couldn't find a better design. I'm happy with it.
