Book Description

What is the healthiest diet for an infant? What constitutes a nutritious school lunch? How do I deal with my adolescent's eating needs and habits? Will my children receive proper nutrients if that are sick, very athletic or vegetarians? This resource answers these and dozens of other questions, not only presenting the latest scientific knowledge about nutrition but also providing recipes from chefs for dishes. The book, written by physicians, dietitians, nurse and social workers at the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital, is a guide to childhood nutrition. The guide includes: information about nutritional needs at different stages of childhood and adolescence; advice on how to cope with a fussy eater and what to feed a sick child; special nutritional requirements for children with high cholesterol, eating disorders, allergies, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, metabolic disorders and other conditions; explanations of such nutritional components as calories, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins - and examples of foods that are sources for each of them; suggestions for healthy snacks; ideas for eating in restaurants with children; and recipes provided by restaurants and chefs from all over the United States.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

More than 100 physicians, dietitians, nurses, and social workers from the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital worked together to produce this authoritative guide on children's nutrition. In addition to offering practical advice regarding nutritional requirements for children of all ages, this valuable resource dispels common myths and answers dozens of questions covering a range of topics, including childhood obesity, food allergies, vegetarianism, and nutrition for young athletes. The authors also discuss nutritional management of common childhood health problems, including gastrointestinal and metabolic disorders, as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Each of the important building blocks for good nutrition?protein, carbohydrates, fats and cholesterol, vitamins and minerals, fiber, salt, and water?is covered in depth; this gives the reader a good sense of the role and importance of each in a child's growth and development. Throughout the text, the authors provide helpful hints for selecting foods and preparing snacks/meals, reinforcing the message that there is no such thing as a "bad" food and that balance is the key to good nutrition. The book concludes with a selection of recipes from nationally recognized chefs. Comprehensive in its coverage, well organized, and easily understood, this book is highly recommended for any consumer health collection. 5.0 out of 5 stars Clear, informative, and easily read, February 7, 2000

This review is from: The Yale Guide to Children's Nutrition (Paperback)
As the first-time parent of a 17 month old child, I'm no stranger to nutritional eating for adults, but absolutely clueless as to the same for children... especially for the most finicky child (MINE!). This book helped to explain methodology of eating, essential childhood vitamins and nutrients, and age by age explanations of eating behavior and nutrition. I bought a few other children's nutrition books along with this one (such as the one from American Academy of Pediatrics), and I definitely found this one the most helpful. The chapter format allows you to read only the chapters that pertain to your child. Complete with recipes! I have yet to try them, but they look delicious.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners, January 2, 2011

Overall, this is a good book, especially for those who don't have a large amount of knowledge of children's nutrition. However, if you are beyond the beginner level, I wouldn't recommend this book as it is probably a lot of what you already know. All in all, a good book for basic reference information, but not if you're looking to dig a lot deeper into children's nutrition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, August 29, 2009

This review is from: The Yale Guide to Children's Nutrition (Paperback)
This book was full of great information about the dietary needs for my toddler. I feel more relaxed and confident that my baby is getting all he needs even though most of the time it seems that he is just not eating enough. There is a a lot of information that is common sense, but also a lot of information that I found (as a first time parent) very useful and up to date. I was receiving a lot of "old school" info about my child's dietary needs from older relatives. Things were not working out and I was feeling stressed and unfit. This book was very helpful and I can continue to use it until my son is a teen. I would recommend it to a friend.
