I've been playing guitar for 3 years and I just received the Yamaha APX500 Thinline Acoustic-Electric Cutaway in the Natural Finish.

For starters I'm 5'5" with small hands and the thinness and small size of this guitar fits me perfectly. This would be a great guitar for a child to learn on as it will not overpower them. I wish I had this guitar for my 1st guitar.

I really like the built-in tuner and auto shut down. Buy this guitar and you don't have to buy a tuner. I thought I would not like the fact the APX500 does not come with a pick guard, but the oval sound hole allows for a little over strumming without the pick hitting and scratching the soundboard.

Okay, the guitar is on the small side but the engineers at Yamaha have designed a full (unplugged) sound. It is incredible really. I own dreadnoughts and love the sound, but the APX (unplugged) sounds great. Now I will admit the APX500 lacks the "Boom" of a dreadnought, but this negative becomes a positive because this allows you to sing along while playing and you do not have to sing loud to be heard over the guitar. Of course if you want a louder sound, and sometimes you will, just plug it in!

Action, Fit, & Finish:
I like "low" action (strings close to the fretboard) on my guitars. On my dreadnoughts I had to take them to a guitar tech to have the action lowered. Not on my APX500. The action was perfect right out of the box. The finish is beautiful and you won't be disappointed by the looks of any of the models.

Tuners and Strings:
The Tuners are very smooth. The strings that come on the guitar are great. I just don't know the size of the strings. I think they are medium acoustics.

Just bought one of these and so far, so good. Great sound, good value, nicely finished, easy to play, easy to use electronic digital tuner, equalizer, and sounds great when plugged into an amp.

I have had this guitar for 5 years and have played it 3-4 times a week so I have logged some hours on it. The problem with most reviews is that they are written shortly after someone buys something - the "honeymoon" phase. No problems have arisen, the guitar isn't broken in, and you just love most things when you first get them. Well, after 5 years I just like this guitar, I don't love it.

It still plays well and the neck has held up with no bends or warping or fret buzz. It's solid and hardy, you don't need to worry about knocking it around a bit. The pickup no longer works on the "fatter" two strings (E&A)so I can't plug it in any more. The finish is still looking brand new too. Mine came with a hardshell case which is still holding up well.

My main complaint with this guitar is: The sound is thin and reedy. It is not full-bodied or loud, but if you are beginner you might not even notice it. Even plugged in and using the amp doesn't help it. Because of that it doesn't make a good guitar for any type of recording or performance. Amplified, this guitar sounds harsh and high-pitched.

It's a good beginner guitar because of the built in tuner and hardshell case, but eventually you'll outgrow it. As I've grown as a guitarist, I've had a yearning for a "better" guitar. I made the mistake of going to Guitar Center and played a bunch of nicer guitars, now I'm moving on to a Taylor. I'm not going to sell this one though as it would be nice to use around the campfire.
