Modern Blu-Ray players do just about everything except make your popcorn. The Yamaha BD-S677 is no exception to this. In addition to Blu-Ray discs, it plays DVDs, CDs, CD-ROMs, and even flash drive media. It can access your DLNA music server over your home network as well as any Miracast enabled device. It has You Tube, Vudu (subscription is required) but not Netflix or Amazon video support. LAN access (WiFi or wired) is also supported.

Sadly, there is no Airplay and no DVD-A support--but you can't have it all. Surprisingly, and pleasantly so, the BD-S677 does support Super Audio CDa (SACDs) and can play any layer in a Hybrid SACD. While we thought that SACD was dead, along comes a 2014 player that supports SACDs. That is music to my ears because I have a substantial SACD collection. (Yes, you can still buy SACDs from folks like Acoustic Sounds, Blue Note and others.)

The BD-S677 does a credible job, and sounds and looks fine. SACD and Blu-Ray has exceptional quality. The quality of FLACs played from my DLNA server is lacking. (The files sound far better played through my Mac Mini with an HRT DAC.) Other than a brief lockup after I had updated my firmware (cured by power cycling the player) I've had no issues with the player.

If you have an SACD collection and want someone a bit less expensive than an Oppo or a Marantz, the Yamaha BD-S677 could be just what you need. Oh yes, it does many other things equally well. Nice job, Yamaha!

I am very pleased with this Yamaha BD-S677BL Blu-Ray Player. I am NOT using it for playing Blu-ray discs or DVDs. I am using it strictly as an audio player for Super Audio CDs.

I believe that some people may think that my reason for purchasing this device is silly but, if you're interested, please read on.

I have three audio systems. One is a home theater, used primarily for movies but also, on occasion, for music; another is an "all-purpose" system, used mostly for music, but also for movies; and the last (really the first) is an audio-only system.

In my two music/movie systems, I now have Oppo BDP-93s. These, of course, play Blu-rays, DVDs, CDs, AND Super Audio CDs.

I formerly had three Sony SCD-CE595 5-Disc CD/Super Audio CD Player (Discontinued by Manufacturer), ALL OF WHICH have "died" (in less than ten years!). (In recent years, I have lost a great deal of faith in Sony products.) Two of these were in the aforementioned systems and one was in my main audio system.

I have a fair collection of SACDs but, after the Sonys "died," I had no means to play them in my main audio system.

I should mention that my associated audio equipment is a Hafler DH-101 pre-amplifier, a Hafler HD-200 power amplifier, and a pair of Klipschorn loudspeakers.

Recently I began to investigate SACD players for use in that system.

This Yamaha player is the least-costly high-quality player I could find which will play SACDs.

I ordered it, it arrived, I unpacked it, and placed it in my system.

Well I got this Yammy yesterday and popped it into my system to check it out and see what it does.
I like another reviewer bought this mainly as an Universal 'Audio' player for SACD's.
One surprise is that, although there is only ONE reference to it in the manual, It plays AND decodes HDCD's!
Yes that's right, HDCD's. I don't know why Yamaha downplays this but it's a HUGE plus to us who have and really like the sound of HDCD'S.
It loads discs quickly, very quickly in fact and that includes BluRay discs.
It's not going to win any construction awards-it's light but solid-typical mass market china manufactured product, but I didn't expect anything more to tell you the truth, not for $219, which is how much I paid for a 'refurbished' one from A4Less.
Like every thing I get electronic from china I popped the cover to see if all the screws inside were torqued properly, they were, which is unusual but nice to see. The circuit board construction is top notch, the disc transport on the other hand is definitely low budget, but in operation it does it's job silently and smoothly, again, even the budget stuff nowadays seems to operate like the premium gear from years past. How long will it last?? who knows, but for what it is and what it does, for a little over $200 it is good value and it sounds really really incredible.
The remote is laid out well but really feels cheap, which again, it is. You do have to push the buttons firmly or it doesn't respond to commands.
It does have a Texas Instruments 32 bit DAC, Be AWARE though that there is an older model WITH THE SAME MODEL NUMBER that used a 24 bit DAC.

Much faster than my previous Yamaha BD-S1065, plus of course it has 3D (works well). It is very light (comparing to BD-S1065 and DVD-S1800) and has a little bit cheap appearance (plastic front panel) comparing to my older Yamaha players. Picture quality meets my expectations, streaming services work well. No major complaints - so far.
