5.0 out of 5 stars A tool but for what job?
I love my DD55. It can fill several needs for any drummer of any skill level. It wll lack if you need a performing/recording solution. No one should expect to pay less than $2000 for that type of gear and this is not it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good toy for drum enthusiasts who want to learn
I love drums and rythim so I decided to learn how to play drums. I decided to buy something not to expensive nor too big so that it would not became a problem if I got disappointed during the learning process. Well, I have this set for one month now and I'm satisfied with it and it had served it purpose which is to initiate myself in the art of drumming. However, I must...

I love my DD55. It can fill several needs for any drummer of any skill level. It wll lack if you need a performing/recording solution. No one should expect to pay less than $2000 for that type of gear and this is not it.

You could perform live with the DD55 but would need to augment it with real kick drum and cymbals and most likely a snare. You could experiment and learn Midi with the DD55. You can take it on the road as a better alternate to a practice pad. Perfect for impromptu jam sessions at the park or beach(although the onboard speakers are weak). For parents oppressed by the constant sound suppression from new and young drummers the DD55 can provide relief(headphones included). For the money there is NO better money spent exploring electronic drums for the first time.

I have found ways to deal with the pedals which aren't great but are more than usable. Construction of the DD55 is solid although it does appear a bit lightweight. The DD55 is not a toy but an economical solution for several issues any drummer faces at various times during their time skinnin'.

I highly recommend getting a Quik-Loc stand.

In closing I plan on buying a second DD55

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended Accessories, October 11, 2005

This got cut from my previous review because I forgot to read the posting guidelines and had information about prices and other websites that sell them. Here are the accessories you should get for the DD-55:

1) Standard Bass drum pedal
2) Yamaha KP-65 (Bass drum sensor pad)
3) Yamaha FC4 Sustain Pedal (Replacement for hi-hat pedal)

Sound isn't that great through the built in speakers, but if you hook it up to more powerfull speakers or a guitar amp it sounds really good. For a more realistic feel, here are some accessories to get:
[...]
Great electronic drum set for a very reasonable price. Once you hook it up to a larger speaker it sounds like an authentic drumset.

Well, I have this set for one month now and I'm satisfied with it and it had served it purpose which is to initiate myself in the art of drumming. However, I must warn you, it's a toy, do not be fool by it having pedals and all, the product will not give you the real feeling that more professional drum sets can give. I'm already thinking about buying a serious equipment, but it won't be until I finished my basic learning phase

Overall this is a good product; it has a lot of quality features and the pads don't miss. However you should plan on plugging it into an amp because the onboard speakers are bad. The pedals should be a lot more sensitive as well.

2.0 out of 5 stars First thoughts, January 18, 2008

WEll I have to be honest...I thought this would be way cooler than it is. I got it for Christmas, and.....I don't know, we'll see. The problem is the sounds aren't very real (especially the cymbals,) and the pedal doesn't react properly. Sometimes I click down on it with no reaction. Sometimes it triggers too early or twice. If it weren't for the pedal though, I would think this was okay...

I plan on trying it out on MIDI really soon and seeing about having it trigger my propellerhead reason samples. But so far this isn't as cool as I was hoping it would be.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a lot of fun!, September 13, 2007
This review is from: Yamaha DD55CAD Touch-Sensitive Digital Drums with AC Adapter (Electronics)
We set up a music studio for friends and family to enjoy (instead of all that TV and movie time). This instrument offers an opportunity for others, who may not have an instrument, to join the fun! When it is plugged into the PA it has a "real" sound. I'm gradually learning what it can do, and I've even bought a book of how to play the drum. It's a worthy instrument for our studio.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great learing tool!, November 28, 2008

I bought this for my 11 year old grandson last Christmas and his band instructor said that learning on this is the reason that he made it into the band. It is NOT a substitute for a full size drum set but when you're limited on space, $$$ and the knowledge to make a very personal decision it's a great way to go. Now that he is more familiar with what his personal need/desires are in a full size set he can pick out his own.

3.0 out of 5 stars It plays great, but cymbals cut out early..., March 26, 2008
This review is from: Yamaha DD55CAD Touch-Sensitive Digital Drums with AC Adapter (Electronics)
It plays great! I use it, plus a predecessor of it, at my brother's place, in band practice.

My only complaint about it is that, when I am playing, and use the "crash cymbals" for emphasis, then keep playing, the "crash" almost immediately cuts out. I don't think "The predecessor" cuts out like this.

(I can't remember the number, but it is a Yamaha. I got it at Costco)

Also, the top-right pad can hardly be heard. I have this same problem with the predecessor.

However, all-in-all, it's a good product!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good beginning drum kit, March 1, 2008
This review is from: Yamaha DD55CAD Touch-Sensitive Digital Drums with AC Adapter (Electronics)
Some pros: The kit includes many music samples from various genres. You can turn on and off the melody and listen to different combinations of the kit (e.g., just the snare, the snare plus the cymbals, the snare plus the cymbals plus the bass drum) and play with the programmed samples until you want to play solo with the melodies. There is a tempo button so you can slow things down, get the hang of the rhythm, and then speed things up to the default tempo. The pads have dozens of adjustments and sound variations. With the very large number of presets, one has many different kit types (i.e., the 7 pads plus two pedals can play many different drum and other percussion instrument sounds).

Some cons: The built-in speakers leave much to be desired. Playing through an amp is okay. Although the sensitivity of the pads can be adjusted and the amount of force the drummer provides alters the volume of the drum sound, simultaneous drum strikes can result in some drum sounds not being activated.

Overall...pretty cool kit for the price.
