Other disc formats handled by the player include standard DVD-Video, video CD (VCD), and video-mode DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW discs. The unit features 108 MHz/12-bit video D/A conversion for pristine quality in any format, while special technology from Faroudja enhances all incoming interlaced video. Faroudja's DCDi (Directional Correlation Deinterlacing) is a video algorithm designed to eliminate the jagged edges along diagonal image lines resulting from video interpolation. DCDi monitors image edge transitions and fills in the gaps between frames. It's used to upconvert standard definition material (480i, what we have on conventional TV) to enhanced-definition quality (480p, or EDTV).
Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The DV-S5770 also performs 3:2 pulldown detection. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; reverse 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.
Audio enhancements consist of an audio-direct switch and CD upsampling playback (to an incredible 1,764 kHz) to give you the best-possible sound quality from your standard audio CDs. MP3 features include the ability to play multisession discs and mixed-format MP3/JPEG CDs.
DVD-Audio and SACD media both offer super-high-fidelity sound. DVD-Audio discs provide 192 kHz/24-bit multichannel and stereo sound, high storage capacity, and unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs. These discs often have compressed Dolby Digital soundtracks for listening on standard DVD players, but true DVD-A decoding is required for full sonic appreciation. Depending on the disc, Sony's proprietary SACD format provides multichannel and/or stereo sound, often presented in a dual-layer format compatible with both standard CD players (at standard resolution) and SACD-equipped players like the DV-S5770 (for full-resolution playback).
As an antipiracy measure, the DV-S5770 performs its own decoding of both DVD-Audio and SACD signals, passing high-resolution analog, not digital, audio to your integrated amplifier or surround receiver. This means you'll need an audio/video receiver with multichannel analog-audio inputs to appreciate multichannel DVD-A and SACD releases.
A set of stereo and a set of multichannel analog-audio outputs route audio from DVD-A/SACD media as well as from Dolby Digital- and DTS-encoded DVDs to your A/V receiver. If you're not planning to use the DVD-A/SACD capability for multichannel programming, both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for simpler connection with your receiver.
Other features include four-step multiple zoom (1x, 2x, 4x, and 8x), corrosion-resistant gold-plated terminals for all pin jacks, auto power off, and a disc lock (child lock) function.
What's in the Box
DVD Player, remote control, two AA remote batteries, an audio/video cable, a user's manual, an AC power cord, and warranty card.

This review is from: Yamaha DV-S5770 DVD Audio / Video Player with SACD, Silver (Electronics)
Yamaha makes outstanding audio and video products and this DVD/CD player is no exception. As is the case with most good DVD players these days, this Yamaha has progressive scan which gives enhanced picture quality when playing DVDs with a high-definition TV. You may not have HD TV yet but you probably will have one within a year or two, at which time you'll want a top notch DVD player with progressive scan capability, such as this Yamaha. For people who like great sound as well as great pictures, something very important sets this model apart from most other good progressive scan DVD players: it plays both the new DVD Audio CDs and the even better sounding Super Audio CDs (as well as MP3s). Most modern DVD players play regular CDs as well as DVDs, and some play MP3s, but very few have the capability to also play both DVD Audio and Super Audio CDs which are the highest fidelity audio media currently available. And SACD circuitry can actually improves the sound of regular CDs as well. So if you want both the best picture and the best sound, a progressive scan player with DVD-A and SACD capability is the one to get. This Yamaha has both of these features at a very reasonable price for equipment of this outstanding quality and versatility.
