This DVD player is a Great Product, Interface is simple to use and intuitive. The manual is easy to read, and the features are great.I purchased Yamaha DVD-S661BL dvd player to replace a low-end Sony model that I have been using for almost 3 year, the picture quality is much better than what I have been used to with the Sony (I'm using component video cable), Audio was very rich and more more crisp and clear than the Sony. There's no button on my reciever (I have a Yamaha Reciever) and dvd player remote to open the DVD tray (but no big deal.) No optical audio out, but I always prefer digital coaxial output.

Superb Picture,

This Yamaha costs a little bit more than some other DVD players, but the picture is well worth the price. Up-converting a 480 line interlaced DVD signal to High Definition formats involves some complex digital signal processing. The chip set used to do this and the skill with which the software is written both matter, so it is not suprising that a more expensive unit will tend to give a better picture.
Important Note: the setup menu has provision for Brightness, Contrast, and Color adjustments. Taking some care to match these settings to personal taste considerably improves the viewing experience. Note 2: On an up-converting DVD player you can compare the quality of the the video processor to the video processor in your TV. First watch a scence with the HDMI output set to 480. Then set the HDMI output to the resoulution of your TV, and replay the scene. In the first case the TV is doing the up-conversion, and in the second the DVD player is doing the up-converting. This test with a JVC DVD player and Sharp Aquos 720p TV produced no discernable difference. Both give a very good picture. Adding the Yamaha player to the mix, however, produces a noticeable improvement in picture quality. Whoever wrote the software for the Yamaha unit did a fine job.

Awesome player. Interface is simple to use and intuitive. The manual is easy to read, and the features are great. I bought this unit because I have a Yamaha Reciever and I wanted to use the reciever remote to operate the DVD. I was not disappointed. The slide show feature from a flash drive is great. We know have a 37" (that's the size of our TV) digital frame. The progressive scan is really crisp. There are only 2 drawbacks: you don't get 1080 out unless you use a HDMI cable and there's no button on my reciever remote to open the DVD tray (no big deal.)
I highly reccommend this product

good dvd player for the price. hdmi allows me to input it to my yamaha a/v receiver and upcovert to 1080p although there is very little difference if i just connect the dvd player to the hdtv and enjoy 1080i. (either 1080i is pretty good or receiver doesn't up convert very well, you decide). the integration between the 2 yamaha products is real nice. this dvd player will satisfy my needs until blue ray prices comes way down.

I bought this to replace a Phillips DVD Player that died within a year. The main criteria was a unit capable of playing Divx files and unfortunately until recently Phillips was the only game in town. The two Phillips units I bought were of poor quality and broke fairly quickly.
This Yamaha is definitely a welcome change. It is very well made and operates perfectly. I apologize for gushing over this thing but in this day and age where everything is a cheap import that falls apart in short order it is wonderful to buy something that is made with a high degree of quality and craftsmanship. You just don't see that much anymore. It plays .avi files perfectly both on a DVD+R disc or from a removable hard drive plugged into the USB port. The picture and sound are excellent and the unit does not hang, skip, or have the picture breakup while playing any type of disc I have tried so far. If you want to play through the USB port make sure your hard drive is formatted with FAT32 as opposed to NTFS. I don't believe the unit recognizes the NTFS format. It may be due to my experience with the poorly made units I had prior to this but I just can't say enough good things about this player. It is very well made both inside and out. It costs a little more but it is worth the extra money. If you want quality and excellent performance this is the one to buy.

Great overall, too deep for cabinet,
By
This review is from: Yamaha DVD-S661BL Single Disc DVD Player with HDMI and USB, Black (Electronics)
I like everything about this unit, except the depth. I have to pull the unit forward with the cabinet door open to plug in the three wires. I purchased right angle RCA adapters but they are still too long. I will have to custom make some kind of adapter to allow the unit to sit in our cabinet with our having to plug and unplug the the audio and video cables. really a huge drag. The unit does not have to be that deep. bigger is not better.
The USB feature is really great. I have a simple stereo digital recorder from Radio Shack that pops apart to expose a USB connector. I can plug it directly into the face of the DVD/CD player to play the tracks live on the tuner. Overall, this is a great unit. The price was good. I would certainly recommend checking cabinet depth before purchasing. If you have the space, you'll be happy with this player.

I am not a Audiophile, but the DVD player is great! Easy to hook-up. The first DVD we put in to test the player was "The Dark Knight". WOW! Works great with our Yamaha A/V receiver. The remote is on the small size but it works fine. Nice DVD player.

This player was easy to set up and to use. The main thing is to learn what the symbols mean on the remote control.

The DVD player showed up within days of ordering it, even with the standard shipping. The price was the lowest and shipping was free. I hooked up an HDMI cable from the player to my TV and am watching the DVD's in 1080. Plays CD's with extreme clarity, even at high volume. Great unit for the price.
