Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Yamaha's DVX-S100 DVD home theater system is designed for simplicity and ease of use. Its surprisingly slim centerpiece is actually a high-resolution progressive-scan DVD-Video/DVD-Audio player with an embedded high-performance, 35-watts-per-channel, five-channel amplifier with built-in Dolby Digital, Dolby ProLogic II, and DTS decoding. The system also includes a five-speaker surround package, a separate 50-watt powered subwoofer, and a preset remote control.

The DVD player produces state-of-the-art progressive-scan video signals for use with high-definition and HD-ready TVs, providing composite-video and S-video connections as well for impressive video through standard TVs. This piece excels in audio performance, too, offering high-resolution stereo and multichannel surround sound through DVD-Audio processing (when playing DVD-Audio software) and 96 kHz/24-bit audio converters. An advanced onscreen menu simplifies setup.

In addition to Dolby Digital and DTS bit streams, the changer can produce a two-channel analog audio signal, provide digital and analog signals simultaneously, and play CD-R/-RW and DVD-R/-RW/+RW discs.

The built-in receiver performs sophisticated surround decoding and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) empowered by a chip called the YSS-938, which offers 41 variations of 21 different surround sound algorithms.

With enhanced directional steering over standard four-channel Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II provides five channels of surround processing from any stereo source--whether TV broadcast, VHS tapes, or your favorite CDs, cassettes, and LPs. Pro Logic II delivers full-bandwidth stereo surround channels with 40 dB of left-right separation.

The receiver also offers Cinema DSP, which creates aural "imaging" that not only makes your home sound like a theater, but also sounds better than most movie theaters. Cinema DSP is designed to bring out the full potential of movie sound mixes, reproducing them the way directors and sound engineers intended. And, when you're listening to multichannel presentations late at night, you'll appreciate Silent Cinema, which simulates 5.1-channel listening through a pair of ordinary 2-channel headphones (not included).

Moreover, the receiver's 96 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters are applied to all five channels (main left/right, center, rear left/right) and subwoofer. Other features include 40-station AM/FM random-access preset tuning, a sleep timer, a headphone jack, and bass boost.

The DVX-S100's speaker package comprises four satellite speakers with 4-inch drivers and half-inch dome tweeters, a triple-woofer center speaker with a 1-inch tweeter, and a 50-watt Advanced YST subwoofer featuring an 8-inch spruce cone driver, variable crossover, and an auto on/off power switch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Home Theater System, February 19, 2003
    By A Customer
This review is from: Yamaha DVX-S100 5.1-Channel DVD Home Theater System (Electronics)
I know very little about home theater and stereo systems. I set out about one month ago going into hi-tech store and listening to systems. Most said to steer away from all-in-one box theater systems. In my search I listened to a number of good systems which cost from $1000 on up. However, I came across the Yamaha DVX-S1000 system and read many favorable reviews. The experts were recommending this all-in-one box system. They said it was comparable to thousand dollar systems. I didn't come across any negative reviews about the system. After reading the reviews and finding that it won the CES 2002 home theater award, I decided to take a chance and get the system.

I have been very very pleased with the system. What a pleasure to listen to it. Its kept me up all hours of the night playing with it. It was very easy to setup. It sounds fantastic. I think it sounds better than most of the $1000 to $2000 systems I heard. I have a large room that was wired for speakers. I was a little worried hooking up a 35 watt system, but after putting the system in it has more than plenty of power. I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great sound and features for the price, January 16, 2003
This review is from: Yamaha DVX-S100 5.1-Channel DVD Home Theater System (Electronics)
I'm not a "hi-tech" person but I love a deal and I think this home theater is it. DVDs play flawlessly and even the tuner gives music DVD quality sound. The system itself is very nice looking...the only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 is that set-up isn't as easy as I would have thought. I had to get a guy friend to help me here. Also the remote has buttons that serve dual functions so you need to sit down with the manual and familiarize yourself with it.
I looked at other models like Onyko and Sony for weeks...reading tons of reviews and consumer comments and decided this was the way to go.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will not believe the sound out of this little device!, August 13, 2003
    By A Customer
This review is from: Yamaha DVX-S100 5.1-Channel DVD Home Theater System (Electronics)
I was originally in the market for a Bose System, when I visited an audiophile friend of mine that introduced me to this system. In his store, we put the Bose and the Yamaha side by side and I could not tell the difference. He stated that he could notice the upper and low "elements" of sound that are slightly crisper on the Bose but I don't believe him!

I now own this system and EVERYONE that I show it to is amazed at the sound. I wish I could give it 6 Stars!
