The 405-watt system (55 watts x 5, plus a 130-watt powered subwoofer) includes 12 distinct surround programs and offers ultra-high-resolution 192 kHz/24-bit audio digital-to-analog conversion for premier sound quality. The receiver includes an integrated AM/FM tuner, and to further enrich your audio/video options, the DVD player is compatible with DVD-Video, SACD (Super Audio CD), CD-R/RW, CD-DA, and compressed audio files from MP3 CD. Depending on the discs, SACD music releases provide super high-fidelity multichannel and/or stereo sound.
The DVX-S650 decodes both Dolby Digital and DTS formats, letting you complement most DVD movies with full, rich sound. You even get Dolby Pro Logic II, which generates discrete 5.1-channel surround from any stereo source. In addition, the system offers Yamaha's Quad-Field Cinema DSP, which replicates the aural attributes of a theater, stadium, concert hall, or intimate club, and Silent Cinema, which delivers surround-sound-like multichannel audio to your stereo headphones. Whether you're watching movies, rooting for your favorite team, or listening to music, the DVX-S650 delivers all manner of thrilling sound.
Rather than use 5 identical speakers, the system provides speakers whose size corresponds to their importance. The front left and right speakers are accordingly the largest (2-way models with hefty 6.5-inch woofers and .75-inch dome tweeters); the center speaker is slender enough to sit unobtrusively atop your TV (boasting two 3-inch midrange drivers for crystal-clear dialogue and a matching .75-inch tweeter); while the surround speakers--generally used for ambiance rather than primary sound sources--are the smallest (with 3-inch woofers and .5-inch balanced-dome tweeters). All speakers are ported (bass-reflex) for enhanced bass performance and magnetically shielded to prevent image distortion when placed on or near TVs or computer monitors.
Any sound system sounds different in each room due to the particulars of that room: size, shape, furnishings, etc. To compensate for this, the DVX-S650 comes with a microphone that you can use to calibrate the system with professional sound equalization in just 3 minutes. Yamaha's unique YPAO system analyzes the acoustics of your room and adjusts various speaker parameters to provide the optimum sound at any desired listening position.
Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVX-S650 is equipped to deliver the full potential of your commercial DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
The system invites you to add additional components with its video and audio connections, including 2 composite-video inputs and 1 output, an S-video output, a component-video output, 2 stereo analog (left/right) RCA audio inputs and 1 output, 2 optical digital-audio outputs, and a preamplifier output for the subwoofer. The system comes with an infrared remote control.
