Amazon.com Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description The Yamaha HTR-5840 XM-ready digital hometheater receiver is a full-featured digital home theater receiver that sports some serious features. In addition to 6.1-channel discrete amplification (100 w x 6 RMS), the HTR-5840 features Yamaha's Digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) amplifier design concept that ensures the highest signal purity and 14 surround programs. Also featured is Silent Cinema, Yamaha's exclusive technology that allows private listening enjoyment of multichannel music or movie sound, including Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround.

The receiver delivers high power to six channels and features Yamaha's unique Cinema Digital Sound Field Processing, or DSP--Yamaha's way of recreating the ambiance of a stadium, a concert hall or an intimate club in the comfort of your own home. The HTR-5840's digital-to-analog converters use an extremely high performance 192 kHz/24-bit operation type. On top of all this, the HTR-5840 has excellent, high-quality two-channel and multichannel surround reproduction, and it reproduces surround for 5.1 channels and 2.1 (virtual surround). The HTR-5840 is also XM Satellite Radio-ready, which means that with an addition of an XM Connect-and-Play and XM subscription, you can tune into your favorite XM broadcasts.

With 14 different sound programs that provide multiple variations, every movie and every piece of music will sound right in your home theater. Discrete power transistors, rather than chips, are used in the amplifier section to provide the cleanest sound possible. The amp delivers 100 watts each to seven channels.

For connectivity, the HTR-5840 includes S-video inputs, three digital and two component video inputs, and a set of front panel A/V inputs for simple temporary connection. The receiver also features an AM/FM digital tuner with 40 station presets.

What's in the Box
HTR-5840 receiver, remote control, batteries, AM antenna, and FM antenna.

XM Connect-and-Play Basics
What is the XM Connect-and-Play antenna? The XM Connect-and-Play is required for "XM Ready" receivers to receive XM programing. It integrates an XM receiver and antenna unit into one device.
How does it work? The Connect-and-Play antenna sends the digital radio signal to your XM Ready audio system via a single, plug-in cable.
Do I need anything else? No. If you have an XM Ready receiver and the Connect-and-Play, you're set. XM service does require a subscription.

5.0 out of 5 stars dont listen to these people!!, July 31, 2006
This review is from: Yamaha HTR-5840 XM-Ready 6.1-Channel A/V Surround Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
i got this receiver about 4 months ago, and let me tell you, not once have i been disapointed. i know a lot about speakers and i know what sounds good, the remote is not bad (like what the privious person said) after about 2 days of use the remote was very easy to understand. and to rename the inputs.....it is not buried in the manual, it takes about 3 EASY steps to get where you need to be. i personaly didnt even need the manual. so do yourself a favor and get this receiver, you wont regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Owned for several years, January 7, 2010
This review is from: Yamaha HTR-5840 XM-Ready 6.1-Channel A/V Surround Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
For me this receiver is very easy to use has no HDMI so beware. The remote wore out wouldn't work anymore had to replace so I would recommend buying an extra one immediately since they could become scarce. I found a replacement remote for around $30. Over all I love this unit and highly recommend Yamaha Receivers over other brands. I also own a Pioneer vsx-819h and like this older Yamaha much better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Sound, Terrible Remote, May 5, 2006
This review is from: Yamaha HTR-5840 XM-Ready 6.1-Channel A/V Surround Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
This is an first impressions review:

The receiver has good connectivity with enough component video, optical in, co-axial in and analog inputs. I am pretty proficient with audio/video equipment (quite a gadget geek), but setup took a while and was anything but intuitive. the optical and coax audio inputs are assignable and if you are using a connection setup different from the default, you have reassign your inputs. This reassign facility is buried deep in the Manual Setup Menu. The sound quality is excellent. I felt an immediate difference with the stero direct sound quality (CD as source) as compared to my Pioneer VSX-D812K. The sound appears to be fuller with a more spatial sound stage that the Pioneer. There is enough and more power in the surround mode for movie watching.

The remote is another story altogether. Programming it is a pain; you have to use a ballpoint pen to activate the recessed code button. I programmed the TV, Cable box, DVD player and CD player, however, when I tried to use these later, at least one of these would not work properly; the user manual has no clear information on what devices can be controlled in what mode. This is major contrast to the Pioneer's remote which is useful, well laid out, intuitive and it just works.

In summary, the sound it excellent, but the setup and remote are poor. I give it 3-stars overall. This receiver might be going back to the retailer and I might look at a Denon or something.
