4.0 out of 5 stars Good receiver for the price, February 21, 2006
This review is from: Yamaha HTR-5860 XM-Ready 7.1-Channel A/V Surround Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
I have a beef with the remote on this unit. All remotes included with units above entry level must have learning capability. This remote, sadly does not.

The quality of the reciever is pretty good. It seems well built. The front control panel is well placed and the rear jacks are intuitively placed. The volume increases and decreases in TINY increments....which is a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it. The e-z setup was pretty easy to do. The on-screen programming is also nicely presented. I can tell no difference in the up-convert function to component. The input switching which is carried out through the receiver is excellent...when you change inputs (DVD, TIVO, CABLE, ETC), it automatically changes inputs on your TV....this is a nice function if you have a spouse who can never remember which input to switch to to watch a movie!!

Overall, I wish this receiver had HDMI jack to upconvert to highest quality signal...you will find this on the top-of-the line units. I'm pretty pleased with this purchase, given the low cost offered by Amazon with free shipping. If you are looking for an upgrade to your home theater, give this unit a shot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear Channel Seperation, March 13, 2012
This review is from: Yamaha HTR-5860 XM-Ready 7.1-Channel A/V Surround Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
I must say, this receiver surpassed my expectations. The channel separation is excellent. I am hearing details in movies which I have never heard before. I previously owned an Onkyo TX SR805. I was using that receiver as a pre-amp. However, there has been some discussion for Onkyo's safety in regards to heat and the use of the receivers chips overheating while pre-out. Out of concern, I decided I would downgrade to this yamaha receiver which also had the option for external amplification. The sound was amazing. Using the center channel with the onboard amplification, there is greater clarity, separation, deeper bass, clear treble on every channel This receiver also did a good job bringing out midrage frequencies. With the Onkyo I felt like I was in a room with speakers surrounding me. With this yamaha, I felt like I was there. The overall effect which I noticed in movies was that the receiver sounded more open than they Onkyo (in that the sound was everywhere) yet there was at the same time a clear distinction in channel separation. You could hear the waterfall all around you, while at the same time hear the glass which dropped on the rocks move distinctly from one speaker to another. With the more expensive Onkyo, I felt like every single channel was separate to such a degree that it was simply speakers around me. First the sound was here, then it was there. Here I felt like I was in a living environment with a receiver which surround me with sound yet maintained distint channel separation. Stereo sound also sounded excellent on this receiver. I would recommend this receiver to anyone who does not need HDMI. In fact I have a blue ray player, and have simply purchased an HDMI extension port for my TV. While this is not HD audio, it is digital. I have used HD, and if you have good speakers (I have polk Monitor 70s in front) and a good receiver, your not going to need HD. Its marketing. Dolby Digital non-HD sounds excellent. I would highly recommend this receiver to anyone who is looking. Yamaha, thank you for spending time in researching movie acoustics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yamaha HTR-5869 XM receiver, September 26, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Yamaha HTR-5860 XM-Ready 7.1-Channel A/V Surround Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
Excellent transaction. Delivery was prompt with the product as expected and in new condition. This was especially appreciated as the first selected Amazon reseller did not respond to any of my emails and I had to cancel that transaction.
