The Cinema DSP's 14 surround programs include multichannel video modes such as Spectacle, Sci-Fi, Adventure, and General, each of which creates an optimum sound field for a specific movie genre; standard and enhanced modes for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, DTS 96/24, DTS Neo: 6, DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, DTS Discrete 6.1, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx decoders; and a host of other options for movies, music, and video games. Also featured is Silent Cinema, Yamaha's exclusive technology that lets you enjoy multichannel music or movie sound through ordinary headphones, and a Neural Surround decoder that separates and localizes all 7.1 channels with greater clarity than ever before to create an astoundingly detailed soundstage.

What really makes the HTR-5960 special, however, are the extras, such as a compressed music enhancer that improves the sound quality of MP3s and other compressed formats and a specially designed terminal that accommodates separately sold iPod docks, such as the Yamaha YDS-10. Plus, the HTR-5960 not only includes a standard AM/FM tuner, but is also XM satellite radio ready. All you need is a separately sold XM antenna and a subscription to XM satellite radio and you're set. And audiophiles can be assured of the best possible sound when listening to XM radio thanks to its utilization of the Neural Surround mode.
Additional features include an audio delay that adjusts to poorly synched dialogue, a selectable nine-band subwoofer crossover, a sleep timer, a night listening mode that lowers the volume during loud passages, a full-function learning remote control, and a sleek silver housing.
With a bevy of digital and analog inputs, the HTR-5960 can accommodate a ton of digital sources such as DVD players, CD players, video game consoles, digital satellite systems, and much more. The rear panel options include three optical digital inputs and one output; two coaxial digital inputs; three component video inputs and one output; four S-video inputs and three outputs (two assignable); four composite video inputs and three outputs (two assignable); and three analog audio inputs (including a phone input) and one output. Also present are a 7.1 multichannel input, a full 7.1 pre-out, and a set of front-panel A/V inputs (including S-video and optical digital) for quick connections.
The HTR-5960 measures 17.1 by 6.7 by 16.5 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a two-year warranty.
What's in the Box
HTR-5960 receiver, remote control, two AA batteries, AM loop antenna, indoor FM antenna, optimizer microphone, user's manual.

This review is from: Yamaha HTR-5960SL 7.1-Channel XM-Ready Digital Home Theater Receiver, Silver (Electronics)
I found the hook up of this device to my HDTV, Set-Top box, DVD, etc to be very intuitive. The automatic speaker, detection and level setting feature worked flawlessly. The sound is very natural with several choices of enhancements for Cinema, music and TV. The use of the remote control is a little less intuitive and I would like the ability to tune the FM section and set Presets using the remore rather then the Front Panel controls. I would recommend this unit for anyone seeking a moderately pticed AV unit, If strickly listening to music is your desire, this may not be the best choice.

I BOUGHT THIS RECIEVER TO REPLACE A SONY ES DA1000.BEFORE I BOUGHT THE YAMAHA I LOOKED AT DENON ALSO BUT YAMAHA HAS SO MANY MORE WAYS TO ADJUST THE SOUND TO EXACTLY THE WAY YOU WANT IT PLUS THE YAMAHA ALSO HAS MORE HOOH UPS. THE REMOTE IS EASY TO PROGRAM AND WORKS WELL. I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER WITH THIS PURCHASE.THE ONLY NEGATIVE THING I CAN SAY IS THERE IS A FAIR AMOUNT OF READING THE MANUAL WHEN YOU SET IT UP THE FIRST TIME. AFTER 2 MONTHS I STILL DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE EVERYTHING.
