5.0 out of 5 stars Great receiver
We purchased this unit to replace a similar one damaged by UPS in shipping. (Always buy the insurance!)

We're very happy with the sound quality. The XM ready feature was a huge help. The damaged unit didn't have that capability and it made listening to our xm much easier with the plug and play feature.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what it was cracked up to be
I tried it for 2 weeks and never could get it to hold the HDMI connections for the video. I don't know if the unit was defective or possible user error but after numerous hours trying to get it to function properly I give. It seemed too good to be true at the 600 dollar price. I'm sure it works well for some people but I did not think a masters degree in electronics is...

Hooking up any piece of electronic equipment is a pain, and my only comment is to ask if there's some way to make it simpler?? I'm a fair techno-geek, but it took me most of one day to get everything connected and working.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than this year's model by FAR!!!, January 2, 2007
This review is from: Yamaha HTR-5990 XM-Ready 7.1-Channel A/V Surround Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
This receiver is phenomenal! The ability to assign amp channels to different zones allowed me to put sound throughout my house while keeping my home theater intact and without having to buy another amplifier. Add to this the HDMI upconvert capability, and this is the center of a fabulous home theater! Well designed and solidly built, this amp has enough flexibility to do anything I can dream up!

I was lucky enough to get one of these before they went to the new model--not only does the 6090 lose the zone controls, but it lost THX certification, too! Buy the 5990 if you can!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice for the price!, April 4, 2007
This review is from: Yamaha HTR-5990 XM-Ready 7.1-Channel A/V Surround Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
This is a very nice AVR. The 140 watt figure stated in the technical details is a marketing ploy which measures the amps at 1khz rather than the standard measurement 20Hz - 20kHz @8ohms. Yamaha rates this reciever at 120w X 7 at 20Hz - 20kHz which is closer to the truth. This AVR really does have amazing power for the price. It drives my floorstanding speakers in stereo very well. I also use it for home theater using the floorstanders, a huge 3 driver center channel and a pair of big Di-pole for the rears. You can run any piece of AV equpment you own with this AVR from turntables to tapedrive. A nice feature is its capability to be used a a preamp in case you want to upgrade to seperate more powerful amps down the road. You would be hard pressed to find another reciever to match this one at the current price. It is several hundred dollars cheaper than the new 6090 and I think it is as good or better.

I just wanted the extra power and sound quality. I got a bunch of extra features. I'm still learning them. It's like taking a course in school. I don't like the way the radio is programmed. Once I got it set up, it works great. The remote needs a direct aim at less than 20ft. This may just be my remote. I'm not sending it back for that. Other than a couple little things, this is a great amp. I tested the up convert from ps2 component 480i to 480p component out. It works great. I can't use it for my cable box due to it's inability to send 1080i or 720p signals through without them looking worse. I knew this before buying though. The way this system lets me switch between audio and video sources is great. Just push a button. Even my wife can do it. (not saying she's stupid, she just doesn't give a hoot about my stupid speaker stuff). I also like the ability to set the EQ on each speaker and select each set for "Full speaker" or set to X-over the lows to the Sub. Also, at night I can select alternate speakers so I don't wake the house. There are a lot of also's with this amp. Overall a great buy for just over $560 delivered. They raised the price $40 now and I don't see free shipping. If your not in a hurry, you may want to wait and see If Amazon sells it again. I love Amazons no tax and free shipping! (Update 7-20-07 . . . My HDMI output is faulty, I get random hdcp errors and my picture will not display. I have to pull the power from my amp and put it back in to correct. It's completely random. That makes the hdmi output worthless. The analog output is fine). I give this amp 3 stars not 4.

I have been eyeing up this receiver for about a year, Best Buy finally had it at a great price and I upgraded from my JBL home theater in a box(which I loved) and I was not dissappointed. First dvd I played after setting up the receiver was Revenge of the Sith and was completely blown away by the clarity of the lightsaber crashes. Next I watched an HD DVD and the sound was everything that was promised by HD sound and this receiver. After toying with those products, I threw in a game on 360 and WOW. This product is truely a great buy for someone looking for High End sound at a price everyone can love. If you find this product on sale, I highly recommend you invest in it for your home theater.

Very happy after using it for two years. Can easily program remote so that it replaces all the tv/dvd/etc remotes... allows for great sound and video pass through. Would recommend it.

1. 2 HDMI inputs (uncompressed audio and video)

2. 5 digital optical inputs

3. XM Radio Ready

4. THX certified

5. 980 watts

I use this receiver to watch DVDs via an HDMI upconverting DVD player, play Xbox 360 and listen to XM satellite radio. They all sound fantastic on it.
