5.0 out of 5 stars great speakers once set up
My only hesitation buying these speakers was the notion they might not be powerful enough. I'm happy to say those fears were completely unfounded. Unless you are a hardcore audiophile or have a huge listening area these speakers are more than enough to give loud, rich sound with zero distortion. I have them in a living room with an open dining area just behind, a space...

2.0 out of 5 stars Terrible Sound
I'm not a huge audiophile or anything, but I can tell you these are the most worthless speakers I've ever heard. I purchased them new via an online auction house because the price was reasonable and they looked great. They do indeed look spectacular, but they sound FAR worse than the ones that came with my cheap Samsung HTIB system (which these were supposed to replace)...

5.0 out of 5 stars great speakers once set up, December 1, 2008

My only hesitation buying these speakers was the notion they might not be powerful enough. I'm happy to say those fears were completely unfounded. Unless you are a hardcore audiophile or have a huge listening area these speakers are more than enough to give loud, rich sound with zero distortion. I have them in a living room with an open dining area just behind, a space as big as any American living room setup, and I can't begin to approach anything past moderate volume before they are deafening yet crystal clear. I have them connected to a Sony DG920 receiver and have had no problems. The one problem I did have was being given a single 80 ft. length of speaker wire and having to learn how to cut, split and strip it myself. It was intimidating to a total novice but actually very easy once I knew what I was doing. You will need a wire cutting/stripping tool and an Xacto knife, available at any hardware store. Tip: the included wire is 18AWG so set your stripping tool accordingly. Previously I only owned a home theater in a box where everything was precut and labeled so a monkey could do it, so I don't know if do it yourself wiring is the norm (and again, it's easy so don't be scared off if this is your first system). I was ticked at the lack of wiring instructions from Yamaha but five minutes online yielded a site with step by step instructions. The speakers are every bit as beautiful as pictured and look like they were made for my Sharp Aquos LCD which shares the same high gloss black finish. Besides wiring, the assembly was minimal and very simple. Note that the surround speakers weigh 3.5 pounds each, so they require a sturdy pair of stands if not wall mounted. I'm very happy with my purchase and would recommend this product to anyone who wants an elegant looking and high performing speaker system.

4.0 out of 5 stars Can't complain, March 31, 2009
This review is from: Yamaha NS-SP7800PN 5.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker Package (Piano Black) (Electronics)
I just purchased these from a store that was going out of business for $200, new, sealed in box. The one concern I had was about the sub. From other reviews I read I wasn't sure if it was going to meet my expectations but for what I paid I decided to give it a shot. There is no doubt these speakers are beautiful. Overall I am very impressed with the sound and was actually a little surprised how the sub performed. You can't crank the sub way up but it does a sufficient job and the fact that it's separate means I can always upgrade. I am very pleased with this set.

I have this since last 2 month. It sounds great. Also one thing to keep in mind if you are buying this product....buy a good receiver too, otherwise you will not be able to experience the true sound quality from these speakers.

It looks great and sounds great too (which is more important than anything else).

5.0 out of 5 stars Slim sexy speakers that deliver great surround, February 8, 2008

Speakers look beautiful and sound great with the exception of the sub. The sub sounds ok but it just doesnt deliver deep enough bass when watching movies and playing music...at least for my tastes. Not really surprising though considering its only sporting a 6.5 inch woofer/ 75 watt amp. If your looking for a great sounding compact surround package with style in mind then I would recommend it. I on the other hand will be searching for a sub with more power in mind.

I purposely bought this system because of the Piano Black finish and it's compact size. I live in a 400 foot studio so I did not need a super powerful system. It's true the subwoofer is onlyl 6.5 inches instead of the standard 10", however, for the size of my room it is more than adequate. The slim styling of the speakers, especially the freestanding ones, fit nicely into the room without being intrusive. And the black piano finish matches my HDTV perfectly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compact Sub is a Plus for my situation, July 4, 2010

I have a pretty tight space for my home theater so I was looking for a sub that wouldn't leave a very big footprint. This setup is great!

I will say that the sub isn't as strong as others I've owned previously, but that's to be expected due to its size.

Also I have to note that the piano black finish does reflect the light from the screen. I was only distracted by it maybe once, but now that I've noticed it, I kind of wish they were matte black.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for first home theater setup, October 25, 2010

Bought these when I was putting together my first living room home theater and they have given me everything I would have wanted. I'm not an audiophile, but since I was spending the money to build a decent first time setup I did care about the sound. I have had them for about a year now and have had no complaints yet.

Pro's:
-Look great! Real slick with the polished piano black. Does make it hard to find other pieces that match it but I wont remove stars for that.
-Easy setup. Just plug in the wires properly and your off
-Rear speakers are perfect height for behind a couch
-Front three speakers are a good small size that can be put under/around TV and they don't distract
-Speakers sound quality is great. I don't blast the sound often, but when a loud commercial comes on or I'm watching a loud action movie they sound great

Cons: (Not really enough to take off stars but here they are)
-Sub isn't the most powerful. Again I don't blast the sound so I rarely hear the sub. It does have a volume adjustment so you can always turn it up. Nice that it also has an on/off button
-Occasional pop sound. Happens, maybe, 1 time a week where I get a loud pop sound from the speakers. Sound never changes and its only for a split second so aside from the shock at first its not noticeable

Summary:
These speakers are perfect for a starter home theater or an established home theater. If you are an audiophile, you may want to spend more money on different speakers, but if you just want good quality and speakers that look good in a room instead of a soar thumb, I highly recommend these.

I rated 2 stars because if you are nearly deaf and want a nice appearance, this is a truly beautiful system -- its just that its not worth a dime if you care about sound.

Gotta see if I can get them returned.. shoulda shopped Amazon.
