I read a review of this speaker that complained of a high-pitched whine over the music, but I figured it couldn't be true, or Yamaha would have fixed such a flaw by now. Well, it is real. And it's really annoying. I returned the unit.

The whine is at an extremely high frequency, once you notice it, it quickly becomes very irritating. It also seems that some people can hear it quite loudly, while others hear it faintly (perhaps those people don't return the unit immediately). Do not buy.

I bought this for my husband to use with his new laptop, which was quickly filled with great music, but which also had mediocre built-in speakers. This speaker not only made our music more portable, it has also been so much fun to play with. It's small and nice to look at; easy to carry room to room. There is a high frequency whine from time to time (which someone else noted), but that doesn't bother him (and presumably is only avoidable in speakers 3x the price).

Pros: This little baby easily gets 5 stars, why?

2. Great build quality to be expected from a Yamaha product
3. Wireless and battery power = limitless possibities
4. It sounds great! The bass is tight and punchy, the mids are sweet, the highs are bright!
5. For the price you can't possibly go wrong

Cons: Anyone that talks about cons about this product in my mind has unrealistic expectations...For the price there are no cons, wireless, battery power, great sound, this little guy is a winner..

Other Thoughts: This little gem plus a bluetooth enabled phone that plays music or music player = instant party, mood maker or listening session.

I bought this because I thought it would be nice to have a speaker in the kitchen play music wirelessly from my laptop (about 15 ft away). But as others have noted, there is a very noticeable whine over bluetooth. It's so bad, you simply can't listen to music that way.

When plugged directly in, the sound is great for it's size. So, I'm using it as a directly connected computer speaker...not what I wanted or needed.

Don't buy if you want wireless speakers. If you want small, good looking, portable speakers then this is pretty good.

Before I buy this beauty I already own NX-A01 which has supreme sound quality for its size. The reason I buy it because it's more portability than NX-A01 (with battery powered and Bluetooth). Consider its size, it's offer supreme sound quality and for sound quality it's 1 step up from NX-A01 I might add. I hear people complain about high pitch noise when play music. At first,I have the same problem and to be honest I was really disappoint and thinking about returning it. However, I soon found out that problem of high pitch noise is actually cause by my desktop bluetooth dongle not the speaker it self. I know this because when I sync with my phone I didn't hear any noise so I transfer the same music file that I would hear the high pitch noise from my computer to my phone, it play just fine no noise no nothing only superb sound. The only lag is that when your battery is low to certain level the bluetooth can't no longer sync with other device, it will only work with 3.5mm jack input.

I was a bit skeptical after reading reviews here and on CNET about the sound quality of this speaker, especially over bluetooth. After testing a few competing bluetooth portable speakers systems, I decided the price was low enough ($50) to buy sight unseen as I couldn't find this unit in a store. So far I can say that my system exhibits none of the sound quality issues noted in the other reviews. I stream music from my iPhone 3GS and from a newer intel based ASUS brand laptop. I also use the unit as the sound source when using my HDMI out on my laptop to play Hulu videos on a projector. Both with movies and various genres of music I have been really impressed with the sound quality and have not yet noticed any high pitched humming. This unit gets louder for its size then any of the other systems I demo'd (Altec SoundBlade, Logitech Pure-Fi mobile/Anywhere 2). Of course you are not going to get tons of bass out of a unit this size, but when compared to other units with similar price/features/size, the sound quality is fantastic. It produces more then enough volume to fill a large hotel room and cause noise complaints. I like that it will seamlessly switch between different bluetooth sources and the stereo effect produced by the opposing speakers is surprisingly good.

In the future I would like to see this unit have the option of a rechargeable Li-ion battery. For buyers who plan on using this for travel or parks this would make for a better integrated option. I seem to get 4-5 hours of battery life at med-high volume on 4 AA Ni-MH rechargeables. On the other hand, it is handy to be able to throw in more AA's if you're not able to recharge while traveling so this is more preference then defect.

It is also annoying that I cannot change the volume remotely when using my iPhone's bluetooth. Since I can adjust the volume just fine from my laptop, I assume this is Apple's fault and hopefully they fix this in their next major software update sometime this summer.

Overall, I give this product five stars because it is really "best in class." Nothing else on the market can match the price, size, sound quality and features of this unit. I have yet to encounter the high pitched hum mentioned in other reviews. This makes me think that either Yamaha fixed the problem in later production runs or that the hum is caused by some bluetooth devices but not mine.

The design is impressive and I'm a big fan of the bluetooth wireless capability. However, the sound quality is poor. I primarily use the speaker with my iMac, but the computer's speakers are better than the Yahama. There is a very subdued whistle/screech when using the Yahama speaker which is very annoying, and sometimes makes me think that my ears need testing.

Not a bad product for the price. Handy to have around the house.

This Yamaha portable speaker delivers power, in a compact no hassle unit. It runs on batteries, or plugged in, and connects via bluetooth. It provides stereo sound, with left and right channels pumping out of one unit. Looking for a portable speaker system, I searched and searched for maximum wattage per channel, and compactness. The YAMAHA NX-B02 delivers. Very pleased with the sound, which I find to be a good value at well under $200.
