One of the greatest products ever designed for the Trombone., December 10, 2008
This review is from: Yamaha PM5 Silent Brass Mute for Trombone
I believe that every trombone player should have this mute. In a nutshell, it will allow you to practice anywhere and anytime without bothering anybody.
Let's say you're in a hotel and it's 1:00 AM in the morning, and you decide that you want to play your trombone. Go right ahead, as long as you have this mute. Play to your heart's content until 4:00 AM if you wish; for no one will care. This mute will muzzle the sound coming out of your horn bringing it to a whisper. Of course it's better to play trombone without it, but this is the next best thing.
Let me illustrate by a story about a band that I used to play in. In this band there was a trombonist who could play circles around most trombonists. He was a Navy Trombonist and a fantastic jazz player. I used to watch him play and marvel at his fantastic range and outrageous trombone solos. What I noticed was that about a half hour before the gig, he would be jamming happily with the Silent Brass Mute in his bell. Every once in a while, he would pull out and play something amazingly cool.
Since then I have purchased this mute and use it all the time. Because of this product, I practice many more hours each week than I would without it. Since I live in a condo-like apartment, it is not possible for me to practice at 11 PM without cops arriving. So I have to use a muzzle, and this is the only one to get!
