5.0 out of 5 stars Combines the Best of the Past with Readiness for the Future, December 4, 2006

This review is from: Yamaha YHT-370SL 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System, Silver (Electronics)
Ever since I discovered this package in the spring of 2006, I have been highly impressed with its speaker and receiver specifications, as well as its features.

I shall begin with the speakers because they are the actual voice in any system. Broad coverage over the audio spectrum from the NS-AP5700BLF front channel left and right speakers is achieved because these two speakers each feature a 6-1/2" woofer and 3/4" tweeter, making them the best front channel speakers to be included in a single home-theater-package solution. This can also be very helpful in situations where surround speakers and/or a subwoofer will not be used. Finding home theater packages with traditional stereo speakers is becoming difficult because of the increasing demands for saving space and use of a subwoofer. Middle and high frequency coverages are well achieved from the NS-AP5700BLC center channel speaker and NS-AP5700BLS surround left and right channel speakers because the center speaker features two 3" woofers and a 3/4" tweeter, and the surround left and right channel speakers each feature a 3" woofer and 1/2" tweeter. Bass coverage lower than most subwoofers is achieved from the SW-P3600 passive subwoofer because it features a 10" cone driver. High-quality speaker manufacturing is an advantage of a passive subwoofer compared to an active one because there is more room to feature a comparatively large cone driver when not incorporating amplification circuitry inside the subwoofer.

Next, I shall now move on to the receiver, the brain in any system. The HTR-5935 is capable of outputting 120 Watts to each of the six speakers, including the subwoofer. Therefore, it handles all the amplification, resulting in optimum audio quality from the speakers and receiver. Bass management is flexible, giving me the freedom to either customize the potential performance of the connected speakers, or connect any size speakers I choose. The MULTI-CH input makes this receiver compatible with DVD-AUDIO and SA-CD, and provides unprocessed audio playback from a DVD player's MULTI-CH output. Surround sound is possible even when listening to stereo movies and music via the optical and coaxial digital and stereo analog inputs by enabling the Dolby Pro Logic, DTS Neo:6, and Neural surround sound processors. Some CDs and DVD-VIDEO audio streams may sound dry and have a living-room-like quality to them. In this case, these recordings can be brought to life via the optical and coaxial digital and stereo analog inputs by enabling Yamaha's Digital Sound Field processing (DSP) programs for acoustic environment recreation effects. S-Video and HDMI are the only inputs not featured on this receiver. However, connecting a DVD player, cable, or satellite TV box directly to a TV's video input is recommended for a straight path from the video source to the TV for a pure picture. Therefore, the absence of these inputs is not an issue for me, and would not be for you if your TV has multiple HDMI and/or S-Video inputs.

I currently use this package with the Yamaha DVD-C950 5-disc DVD player (which I also reviewed in case you are interested in the player or my review of it) as part of the entertainment center in my living room. In conclusion, if you are looking for a home theater package with top sound quality, tonal flexability, advanced features, and multiple hookup options, you have come to the right place!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value., January 23, 2007
This review is from: Yamaha YHT-370SL 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System, Silver (Electronics)
I was going to buy a home theater system with the dvd player included. The major chains have been pushing these, but be aware of their limitations. They usually have no optical inputs and can be maxed out by adding one component. This system (YHT-370) grows nicely, although 2 more optical inputs would have been great. The speaker wire included is very small guage so invest in something better. I was leary of a non-powered subwoofer, but this thing rocks (and rumbles). I wanted to get speaker stands for the front speakers, but I could not because there are no brackets or screw holes. This is probably because of their size. I also love the fact that you can hook 3 component video sources and switch audio and video with the press of a button.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful amp, decent speakers, versatile connections, May 20, 2006

Originally i bought a Sony becuase the price point was a lot lower and i thought it would work well with my Sony television. I was hoping the Sony's universal remote would be able to control all my components, not all of which are Sony. Turns out the universal remote only worked with Sony products and TV control was very inconvenient and difficult. Sound qaulity was also very lacking.

I returned the Sony package and picked up the Yamaha YHT-370. Although it was a couple hundred dollars more this system works amazing. I can control all my components regardless of make. Theres an entire section on the remote for controlling the TV etc.. I was able to pack away 3 remotes and only need to use this one.

The reciever has a ton of features. Including a night mode which works great when i want to watch a movie and my girlfriend wants to go to bed. The sound qaulity overall is very very good. Music, Movies just about anything sounds full and crystal clear. The recievers options could be a little overwhelming for a novice. Just about everything imaginable can be tweaked. Once you have it configured for your room everything sounds very good. Tweak it and leave it.

The amp is a unit i will definitely be keeping for a long time. Tons of audio and video connections including HD. No S-Video connects unfortunately but most current DVD players etc use HD connections anyway. Has standard coax video connections.

This system supports speaker upgrades. I will probably upgrade to a powered subwoofer and maybe better surround and center channel speakers in the future. I am in no rush to upgrade the current speakers. They all sound great for an all in one package such as this you just cannot beat the price.

For the price you just cannot beat this deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Class for small to medium sized rooms, June 5, 2006
This review is from: Yamaha YHT-370SL 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System, Silver (Electronics)
I recently purchased this System over the weekend. It took me a great deal of time to set up and get the speakers just where they sounded best. It took me about 3 hours total. The longest part was stripping the cables and measuring the cable lenght that was needed. This was entirely exptected though.

After setting everything up, if you want the best sound you need to learn all the settings the reciever has to offer(and there are enought to keep you occupied for hours just testing the results). All this was expected since I have been researching this a lot.

Now onto the performance of the system. The center speaker is of great quality, I have never heard voices come out at this systems quality on a system at this price point. I even heard accents in actors that I have never before noticed. The subwoofer is pretty powerful for being a non-powered one. It is still deep enough to shake the walls and feel throughout most of your house. The sound quality is great at default setting and can be even better if set it up right for what you are listening to. There is not an equalizer setting though, Just pre-set equalizer settings.

On this system, the quality of sound stays clear and sharp even at deicble levels that are nearly painful(at least for my room's size). I tried my best but could not get this system to produce distorted sounds at high volume.

There are only three downsides to this system.

1. The included cables.

You have to strip the cables and measure them yourself and they are not exactly MONSTOR quality.

2. The subwoofer.

It is now powered

3. The receiver does not have S-video(but few things need it, and it has 3 component inputs so you should just use those anyways)

All in all I give this system a perfect 6 out of 5 for the price point.

I have owned this system (YHT-370) for about 3 months and it has delivered to all expectations. High quality sound, excellent compatibility with all my other components, full featured, excellent high-quality wood speakers: What more could someone want? Unless you are a professional musician or composer, or need ultra-high end gear, this blows away all the low/mid-range products. I am always skeptical of consumer electronics, but Yamaha has always delivered over the long-term for me as a brand.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent system for the price, October 17, 2006
This review is from: Yamaha YHT-370SL 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System, Silver (Electronics)
Bought it a few days ago for the living room. BTW, this is my first HT system, so I was surprised about the number of cables to connect, parameters to tweak etc. (the unit does not have auto-calibration). Once hooked up and with everything properly dialed in, the system rocks. Awesome sound, speakers and unit match very well. I had been coerced (by message boards etc) into thinking that only a +2000 USD system (if possible, garnished with rather exotic components) would do the job and 'make me want to watch movies'. Now, having the Yamaha system at home, I must say I am more than positively surprised how well a sub 400 USD unit can sound, for both listening to music and watching movies.

Would definitely buy it again. A few minor comments, though. 1) Buy decent audio cables, the ones in the box are not even worth looking at. 2) the unit does not pick up automatically the soundformats from my digital cable box, I wonder though whether a toslink cable might do away with that problem. 3) You will probably need the help of somebody more experienced to set it up for you if you are not familiar with the 'lingo' and parameters such as 'sound pressure level' or 'LFE'

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing product, August 31, 2006

This review is from: Yamaha YHT-370SL 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System, Silver (Electronics)
After buying a Sony system and not being happy, I researched other systems.

I spent several hours at Best Buy and happened upon a gentleman that seriously knew home audio.

I was looking for a surround sound system for the house that wouldn't break my budget.

Originally I was trying to find a system that used HDMI inputs as I have just recently purchased a LCD tv. I heard the Yamaha in the store and was impressed. But all it had was component video and no HDMI.

Well, long story short, I bought the Yamaha. When I got it home I was blown away.

Without ever hooking up a system, I was able to hook up the system and even "set" the speakers.

When you buy this system you MUST buy the monster cable for the speakers and you will have to buy banana clips. Just ask anyone in home audio and they can tell you what they are.

The reason is simple. The speaker wires that come with all home audio systems are very small. Picture it this way. Let's say that you are trying to drink a milkshake with a very small straw, you will get some but it is going to be very difficult. With a large straw it's easier. The monster cables are able to freely conduct what is trying to come out of the speakers.

In conclusion, this system is incredible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sound for the price, April 12, 2007
This review is from: Yamaha YHT-370SL 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System, Silver (Electronics)
I had been looking for a decent "out of the box" home theater system to save me the trouble of mixing and matching speakers, receivers, etc. I also didn't want to spend a ton of money. I like to watch a movie once in awhile, but I play alot of video games. I just wanted sound that was immersive and added to the experience. This system accomplished that.

I'm not a technical guy but I know the importance of good speakers, so the focus of my search was quality speakers. I love the speakers that came with this set. They look and sound good. My only complaint is the sub-woofer. The bass doesn't seem as deep and booming as it could be. I find myself manually adjusting the bass levels to bring out the booms.

Anyway, I am very happy with this system. For a normal guy that just wants good sound at a decent price, this was a great purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent system for home theater, May 2, 2007
This review is from: Yamaha YHT-370SL 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System, Silver (Electronics)
I've attached it to my LNS4095D with an optical cable and it makes the TV a real theater system intead of an excellent display with really flat sound.

I got it for $270, the only upsetting thing is that shipping is so expensive

$49 (it is 91 lbs).
