Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The Yamaha YHT-740 is a complete home theater system with a 6.1-channel receiver, a five-disc DVD Audio/DVD Video changer, a voice-matched speaker system (with two main speakers, three surround speakers, and a center speaker), and a powered subwoofer. The receiver features six-channel discrete amplification (95 watts x 6) to provide the cleanest sound possible on all channels, along with decoding for DTS-ES Discrete, Dolby Digital EX, and Dolby Pro Logic II sound. The unit's 32-bit Cinema DSP processing projects three sound fields: a presence field in the front and two surround-sound fields in the left and right rear for powerful, realistic 3-D soundscapes. Its total of 24 Cinema-DSP surround modes gives you the versatility to find a sound mode for every media type. The receiver also employs a high-performance 96 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converter to perform accurate sound field reproduction for outstanding separation and precise musical delineation.

The system's progressive scan five-disc DVD player is compatible with DVD-Video, CD, VCD, CD-R/RW, and MP3 formats, giving it the versatility to play most media types. It also includes Yamaha's PlayXchange system, in which the changer can swap out four discs while the fifth is still playing, eliminating the awkward gap most units suffer while discs are rotating.

The two main speakers and three surround speakers feature a two-way acoustic suspension system, with high-compliance 3-inch woofers and 1/2-inch balanced dome tweeters, while the center speaker features a two-way, three-drive system. They also come with magnetic shielding, which lets you place any unit on a TV or video monitor without degrading the picture via stray magnetic fields. The speakers deliver a frequency response of 130 Hz to 50 kHz. The Advanced YST subwoofer offers a powerful bass response with its 6-1/2-inch multirange driver. Powered at 120 watts, the subwoofer has a frequency response of 30 to 200 Hz. The system, which handles Video Up conversion, includes four video inputs, three S-Video inputs, two digital inputs, a component video input, a speaker A-B output, and a front-panel A/V input, plus it comes with a preset remote control.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid the Yahama DVD players and speakers., September 10, 2004
This review is from: Yamaha YHT-740 Home Theater in a Box with 5-Disc DVD Player (Electronics)
This is the third Yahama Home Theater In A Box (HTIB) system I have had since June of 2001. The only reason why is the returns I had to make at Best Buy. Each time, the DVD player has failed and I have had to replace the entire system because each model was no longer carried. And we all know what a pain it is to disconnect the old and re-wire the new. Each time the DVD player failed. With this system, the speaker quality is poor, and after a few months, sounded tinny and crackly. The speakers can't handle the power of the amp, especially the front center channel. At times, during movies, you can't understand the spoken languages because of the poor quality. For the money, one would think you would get better quality. The sub-woofer is ok, the receiver is very good. Set-up manuals need some work. Customer service email is very good. Got to return it again. Glad I purchased the extra warranty with Best Buy or these systems would have cost me a bundle!! Definitely going with another brand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome system for the money, not one complaint., July 28, 2005
This review is from: Yamaha YHT-740 Home Theater in a Box with 5-Disc DVD Player (Electronics)
I bought this system immediately after I purchased a 55" tv because I thought it would be a crime to own such a television and use build in sound (although I said I was buying it because I needed the progressive scan DVD player...) and it has been everything I could have asked for.

When I went shopping for a system, the main item I was looking for was a compact speaker design, because I wanted to mount them on my walls. This choice eliminated most of the Polk equipment and a few other manufacturers. I narrowed it down to this system and a Sony system. The feature that won me over was the separate receiver, which made for a nicer integration into a home theater system, and gave the system a much longer shelf life, since you will be able to replace the DVD player without having to buy a new system.

The YHT-740 was introduced more then a year ago, but it is still a solid choice today. With 6.1 DTS ES it is still ahead of today's 5.1 choices, and with the included 5 Disc DVD (which sells alone for almost $200) this is just a great deal.
