The HTR-5740 is a powerful and versatile receiver that accepts the DVD player's Dolby Digital, Dolby EX, and DTS/DTS-ES surround signals (5.1- and 6.1-channel formats) and routes each channel to its designated speaker. Dolby Pro Logic IIx generates discrete multichannel surround sound from any stereo source. Additionally, the receiver's 192 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converter renders pristine sound from CDs and DVDs with linear-PCM (uncompressed) sound, while Yamaha's 32-bit Cinema-DSP processing gives you an additional 29 surround effects to enhance your movies and music. Front-panel audio/video inputs make it easy to play games or view camcorder footage through your theater, and the receiver offers a total of 4 A/V inputs, 2 of which handle component-video sources. The tuner section offers 40-station AM/FM preset tuning.
Yamaha's 5-disc DV-C6660 spins DVD-Video, VCD, SVCD, CD-R/CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and MP3 CDs, putting a range of audio and video media at your disposal. The player features both interlaced (for standard TVs) and progressive-scan component-video outputs (for use with compatible HD or HD-ready TVs). Other features include picture zoom, shuffle play, Favorite Track Selection (sequencing), CD Text display (with applicable discs), and Yamaha's patented PlayXchange system allows swapping out four discs while the fifth is playing.
The 7-speaker complement includes the 6-speaker NS-AP3500 for the front, center, and surround speakers and Yamaha's YST-SW030 subwoofer for deep bass, which is important for effective home theater sound. Each speaker in the NS-AP3500 ensemble uses a sealed, acoustic-suspension design with a 3-inch woofer and a .5-inch soft-dome tweeter. The center speaker houses dual 2.5-inch drivers for broader dispersion of midrange frequencies--critical for clarity of dialogue and other center-channel information.
The 130-watt, 8-inch subwoofer offers Yamaha's patented Advanced Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST), which generates incredible bass from its small enclosure. Advanced YST uses negative-impedance feedback in the amp and a Helmholtz resonator in the speaker to provide strong and accurate bass.
QD-Bass (Quatre Dispersion Bass) technology uses a down-firing driver with square, pyramid-shaped reflective plates to radiate sound with equal effectiveness in all directions. The sub's individual volume control permits the perfect matching of the sub's output to the overall volume of the system. The sub has a signal-sensing circuit, too. When it detects an audio signal, it powers right up. When it senses no signal for several minutes, it shuts itself off.
Yamaha's BASS (Bass Action Selector Switch) tailors the sub's output for either video or music at the touch of a switch. The sub accepts a line-level RCA input only, and a handy phase normal/reverse switch makes it easy to phase-align the output of the subwoofer with the other speakers in the system (room placement greatly affects phase relationships).
All speakers included with the YHT-750 feature magnetic shielding, so they can be placed near a TV or monitor and cause no picture degradation.
What's in the Box
DVD player, surround receiver, surround speakers, active subwoofer, a remote control, remote batteries, all requisite cabling and user's manuals.

What an AWESOME system!,

This review is from: Yamaha YHT-750 730-Watt 6.1-Channel Home Theater in a Box (Silver) (Electronics)
I actually bought the DTX-3000, since the YHT 750 has been discontinued and out of stock at all the places searched (and it has been quite extensive, believe me). The ONLY thing different in the 3000 are the speakers (NS-AP8500), which I think may even be better, as they are a bit larger - dual 2.5 woofers with .50 tweeter, rather than the one 3" woofer the 750 has. Everything else is exactly the same - the A/V receiver (HTR 5740), sub woofer (YST - SW030), and the 5 disc changer (DV-C6660). You can verify this information in the Yamaha website (www.yamaha.com).
The sounds that emit from the speakers are quite powerful and full of life. It has great middle tones and the sub is quite distinct, not muffled. The sub is powered and has its own volume control. It is really easy to use - it has a basic set up which is fine, but if you want to fine tune it to your liking or balance, you can do so without too much trouble. I have a very small living room (about 15 x 17') and the cables that come with it were exactly right. No more, no less. Therefore, if you have a medium to large room, you will need additional cables. The cabling set up was quite effortless, just connect the speakers and then the components. It took me all of 2.5 hours from opening the boxes to setting up, to putting away the boxes (and that was with 45 min of down time, because I didn't have the volume up high enough, and as a result thought it was not connected right... duh). I was able to watch Lord of the Rings in no time, enjoying the surround sounds - remember the dragon lighting? It literally came from left to right. Esthetically, the 3000 has tall speaker stands convertible to table tops (quite convenient for me because of my living room's set up), which are very attractive and look like a million dollars. The receiver is a little bulky, but if you have the space it is worth it. I find that it is much better to have separate components rather than unified ones - if something goes wrong, the Yamaha has the capability of replacing one component rather than the whole system. There are some integrated systems that are that way, especially if you are looking at all inclusive home theater in a box. If one component breaks down, you will have to replace the entire system. Also, with this system you are able to add other components as well, such as a turntable, an additional cd player, gamebox, etc. Also has capability of another set of speakers (speaker A and B), for multi-room listening. All in all, this is a great system, for a fraction of a price of most home theater systems and, most importantly, sounds great. I recommend highly it.

I have had this system for 5 months now and have only had the opportunity to use it for three of those months. It seems that the DVD changer is non servicable and it was sent back to Yamaha but I have not received a replacement to date. SERVICE IS TERRIBLE> I was not called back when I was told I would be and have been shuffled from one person to the next still waiting to hear.
