YHT-399U

    Key Features

  • 5-channel powerful surround sound (100 W per channel)
  • HD Audio format decoding: Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™;
Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio™
  • Discrete amplifier technology
  • 192 kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown DACs for all channels
  • High dynamic power, low-impedance drive capability
  • 2-way speaker drivers for high power input capacity
  • 8" 100 W active subwoofer

Entry Home Theater System Comes with Advanced Features

The YHT-399U is designed for ease-of-use and full-scale AV entertainment with outstanding Yamaha sound quality from a discrete amp circuit design. Included is a front panel USB input for iPhone®/iPod®, as well as a compact 5.1 channel speaker system with a powerful 8" 100 W powered subwoofer. This system is also ready for the next generation with sophisticated technologies like 4K video pass-through and ECO mode for lower power consumption.

4K Pass-through for Next Generation Super High Resolution Images

This AV receiver provides advanced HDMI® features including 4K pass-through. 4K refers to four times the resolution of a 1080p display. This receiver is capable of passing the 4K data from the source to the display, for image clarity far beyond present standards.

HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel

3D means the receiver can handle 3D signal data. The Audio Return Channel function enables data to be sent and received via the same HDMI cable, so you can hear the sound from the TV via a single HDMI cable, with no need for an extra optical cable.

YPAO™ Sound Optimization for Automatic Speaker Setup

YPAO™ Sound Optimization for Automatic Speaker Setup

YPAO analyzes the room acoustics and adjusts various audio parameters for optimum sound in just a few minutes. It's like having a professional installer calibrate your system.

USB Digital Connection for iPod and iPhone

USB Digital Connection for iPod and iPhone

A USB port on the front panel allows convenient connection of an iPod/iPhone, which also charges when connected. Because the digital signal from the iPod/iPhone is transmitted directly to the AV receiver, there is no signal loss or interference, so you enjoy the best possible sound quality. In addition, you can use the receiver's remote control unit to operate the iPod/iPhone music playback functions.

SCENE for One-touch Start

SCENE for One-touch Start

Pressing a SCENE button powers on the AV receiver and selects the input source and DSP mode. You can reset the buttons for different sources by selecting a source and DSP mode, then pressing a SCENE button for more than three seconds.

Surround Realism HD Audio with CINEMA DSP

Yamaha's exclusive CINEMA DSP technology supports playback of HD Audio (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, etc.), providing natural and expansive sound imaging.

HDMI CEC for Easy Operation

Another benefit of HDMI is the availability of CEC functionality. When the unit is connected to a CEC compatible TV, it will turn on and off together with the TV, and you can use the TV remote to control the volume. CEC also provides advanced functionality with other components. For example, you can use the receiver's remote unit to control player functions like skip and stop.

*All connected devices must be HDMI CEC compatible. Some CEC compatible TVs/players may not work.

Subwoofer Trim for Improved Sound Imaging

The Subwoofer Trim Control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is "pushed" toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim Control takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound.

Compressed Music Enhancer

When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. Yamaha's Compressed Music Enhancer employs sophisticated digital signal processing using exclusive algorithms to restore what was lost, so the music always sounds the way it should.

Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control)

Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialogue and vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials, and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening when you do not want to disturb others.

ECO Mode Lowers Power Consumption by 20 Percent*

ECO Mode Lowers Power Consumption by 20 Percent*

Yamaha's new ECO mode reduces power consumption by about 20 percent. It can be set from the top of the GUI menu.

*Compared to power consumption when ECO mode is off (Yamaha measurement).

Selectable Auto Power Down

Selectable Auto Power Down

Auto Power Down lets you save energy by selecting to turn off the power after two, four, eight or 12 hours.

Low Standby Power Consumption

Yamaha makes its receivers eco-friendly with a low standby power consumption of 0.3 W.

First of all, if you are looking for a THX-certified system, this is too low-end for you. However, if you are looking for an affordable system that doesn't take up much room and doesn't break the bank, you've found the right one!

The box that arrives is a little on the large size, with the speakers in another box inside, along with the receiver in yet another box. The subwoofer is packaged nicely in there, too and everything supports everything else in the shipping. This was nice to see.

There is a quickstart sheet to help you in the setup, and it warns you at various steps not to turn on the receiver until the speakers are plugged in. As this seemed to be good advice, I took it. The speaker wire is packaged in the box with the speakers, and it is cheap, 18-gauge wire, but this suffices for most home systems. You can always buy more expensive cable if you so choose. Having a wire stripper is very handy with this step, though, as the plastic sheath around the wire is fairly tough and the wire is comprised of lots of tiny copper strands. (It would be really easy to accidentally cut through a few of those strands as you strip the wire with scissors or diagonal cutters.)

Connecting the speakers is a breeze. The front left and right channels connect into screwposts that also support banana plugs, and the center and rear channels plug into spring-slots. The subwoofer plugs into its own connection with an RCA cable, and then it plugs into an AC outlet separately from the receiver. After all this, plug in your components, connect the receiver to your TV, and then run the YPAO automatic setup.

I've had previous systems that tried to deafen me with the auto setup, and I expected this one to be no different.

system is a little complicated to set up, had to cut the speaker wire instead of pre cut lengths. lots of options...once it was set up it is AWESOME! the windows rattle and the floors shake all without any distortion.

After being unlucky enough to have gone through 2 lightning strikes near my house, I've actually purchased 2 of these systems. The first one I didn't spend a lot of time setting up. As a result, the sound was good but not stellar.

After getting the second one, I decided I would spend more time getting the distances and levels right. OMG! What a difference! I am thoroughly impressed by this system. It is truly a "home theater."

Make sure to spend time tweaking the levels and distances. It will greatly effect your audio experience.

I'm a big fan of 5.1 sound. I owned a Sony system for years and years but felt the need to upgrade so that I could get 5.1 while streaming things through my Roku 3, something my older Sony system did not support. This seemed like a good system at a good price so I went with it.

First off, it all comes in one big box. The big box has two smaller boxes inside of it: one for the head unit and one for the 5 speakers. The subwoofer is wedged between them with styrofoam support. It was easy to open and find everything, however the one big box was cumbersome to take up the stairs of my house. If you live up some stairs and have a bad back, you would be wise to make the delivery person carry it up the stairs for you...it's big and cumbersome.

It comes with everything you'd expect: remote, batteries, speaker wire, etc. They throw in some bonus stuff too like little rubber stick-on feet for any speakers you might rest on something instead of hang and some velcro if you want to be doubly sure a speaker doesn't fall off a shelf. Not a big deal, but nice touch.

Set-up went like any other sound system I've ever bought, with the notable exception that you have to cut and unsheath all the speaker wire (and no tool is included to help you). This wasn't a HUGE deal but my previous Sony system had everything pre-cut and sheathed and set-up time was WAY faster as a result.

Once it's all set up though, it's awesome. The sound is clear and you have a great degree of control over each individual speaker. The fact that the setup menus appear on your TV rather than on the display of the head unit is REALLY helpful. The microphone that's included did a GREAT job of setting up each speaker automatically...

I'm very pleased with this unit. It does just what I wanted - give me a much richer and more involving sound. This is my first home theater unit. I felt that having a high definition TV (42" plasma) warranted more of a "high def" sound than the TV by itself.

I think I also got a bit lucky - I bought it not knowing exactly how I would connect it. It turns out I was able to get a good working setup after a fair bit of time on the phone with Amazon tech support (who were great).

Here's what I learned:
My TV has an HDMI connection with ARC - this means the TV can control the home theater unit - turn it on and off when I turn the TV on and off, and change the Home Theater system volume when I change the TV volume. My TV also has the option to use "home theater" audio instead of the built-in speakers. With all that, I can continue to use the same single remote-control for 90% of my TV watching. So I needed to buy an HDMI cable to accomplish this.

I receive cable through an HD Tivo unit that has a cable-card in it to decode the cable signal. The Tivo has an HDMI out, and I learned that the best bet was to plug the HDMI cable from the Tivo into the Home Theater, and then the home theater sends the signal to the TV as described above (I assume it would be the same with a cable box). This lets me choose TV on the home theater unit, and get my cable on the TV.

The DVD player I have does not have an HDMI port, so I connected it to the Home Theater unit with a component cable (3-prong Red-Green-Blue) for the video and an optical cable for the audio. With a component input to the Home Theater, you also have to have a component connection between the Home Theater and the TV.
