2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with stand
The Piano was good, but be WARNED.
THE STAND THAT COMES WITH THE PIANO DOES NOT FIT THE PIANO.
I discovered this when trying to put it together.

I did a lot of research before ordering this piano. Even so, I was very surprised at how much was included for this price. A WONDERFUL Yamaha digital piano with many fantastic features. The stand. The AC adapter. Even free lessons on music theory on a CD to get you started. Throw in all of the voices, sounds, songs, and ability to interface with a computer, and you have an unbelievable deal.
The only down side is that the software it comes with doesn't load on my Mac :-(, but since most things don't, I wouldn't downgrade it just for that. It interfaces with Garageband, which is the software I already use, so that's enough for me.
Oh, and talk about fun. I'm got this to practice my piano lessons at home, and the first day it came I had so much fun I went to bed with sore wrists. I kept trying out practicing my scales with different voices. I guess I'll have to "space out" my fun a little bit better in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who needs an upright piano?, February 20, 2007

Wow! That was the first word out of my mouth when I heard the basic piano play. I thought for a couple of hundred bucks it couldn't sound as good as our good ol' upright. Boy, was I wrong. No, it does not have the full keyboard, and no, they are not weighted keys, but for a family of self taught occasional players this was a great deal. If you are on a tight budget like my family, this is a suitable substitute for a "real" piano.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Home Piano, February 5, 2007

I am not an expert pianist, but I do have sensitive ears and some experience fingering really good pianos while I was studying my master's degree. This piano's keyboard allows a wide range of finger expression (it's touch sensitive) and can be hooked up to a pedal giving it a pretty good piano feel. The USB connection allows you practice and play your favorite midi songs. Download a song from the web in midi format, upload it to the keyboard, and begin your own lessons with the music you prefer. It's not difficult or complicated. The variety of instruments the keyboard synthesizes is impressive and let's your wild side out. The pre-installed list songs is also substantial. It's not a keyboard that you soon forget--it's not one that will begin to collect dust quickly. You do want to come back and play--just like when you can play a real piano. For a really good musician, I suppose it probably would be a better center for study and practice . Obviously it cannot beat a real grand piano. It does have a nice sound and feel, even better when your budget or home is smaller than the grand piano.

5.0 out of 5 stars It comes with an adapter!, April 4, 2007
This review is from: Yamaha YPT400MS Portable Electronic Keyboard with 61 Full Size Touch Sensitive Keys and Keyboard Stand (Electronics)
I've played piano for years and have my own beloved, full-sized piano, but I was looking for something different to pull me out of classical and perhaps send me on a fun honky-tonk path. I think this is it. I love the sounds and all the options. The display is great. I was concerned I'd be frustrated with only 61 keys, but there is so much to do with those 61 keys that I've gained more than I've lost. I am not a whiz at keyboards but it's fun to sit with the book and learn the features. I've started using the CD and I from what I've seen, I like the software. About the adapter -- I've read that some aren't included so I purchased an additional one (which I ended up returning). My keyboard came with the adapter and stand (which holds it nice and solid). All I had to purchase was a sustain pedal. I think it's not only a blast, it's a great deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the money, February 16, 2007
This review is from: Yamaha YPT400MS Portable Electronic Keyboard with 61 Full Size Touch Sensitive Keys and Keyboard Stand (Electronics)
After playing piano for about a year while in high school (1970s!), I wanted to get back into it, and my wife bought this keyboard for me as a Christmas present. I've been having tons of fun with it! It has good feel and sound - I was pleasantly surprised at how realistic the piano sound is. It has lots of great features, which I've only partially explored. My only reservation is that I wish it had more keys - an extra octave would be nice. But then it would be bigger, less portable, and no doubt more expensive. At least you can transpose the keys, so you can choose whether you need more low notes or more high ones. If you're looking for an inexpensive but very functional keyboard, you won't go wrong with this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Value, March 13, 2007

I've been playing a musical instrument for sixty years and this is the greatest instrument in it's price range. I have other keyboards which are more expensive, but playing the Yamaha is just plain old fun. It's like a one man band. You don't have to be an accomplished musician to play this instrument. I highly recommend this keyboard.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for the price., June 27, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Yamaha YPT400MS Portable Electronic Keyboard with 61 Full Size Touch Sensitive Keys and Keyboard Stand (Electronics)
YPT400MS seems to be the same keyboard as the YPT400, YPT400AD, and PSR-E403. The MS model appears to have the more attractive packaging, at least to me. It includes the AC adapter as well as the keyboard stand. It does not include a USB cable. This is currently the lowest cost of the packaging, but they all appear to be the same keyboard.

The keyboard has just over 500 voices which can be greatly changed with the various controls. Pitch, reverb, delay, sustain can make a great difference. The touch sensing keys (off by default) work very nice. This is a large keyboard. While not heavy, it is not light.

The only downside are the speakers. While they are good speakers, when you turn the volume all the way up they distort. At least with most voices. Combine that with the fact that all the way up is not very loud, and that is somewhat disappointing. Many of the voices at full volume are not loud in quiet a bedroom setting. For performances, external amplification would be a must.

For the price I am very happy with my purchase.

Not long ago, my venerable Yamaha synthesizer was finally wearing out after many years of faithful service. I needed to find a portable keyboard of the same octave range that had a lot of features for not too much money -- and that had a piano touch rather than an organ touch (like my old keyboard did).

Leave it to Yamaha to live up to its reputation. This keyboard is simply incredible for the retail price (let alone as reduced at the time of sale). It has more bells and whistles (rhythms, instruments, and much more) than I will ever likely use. It can be used profitably by a whole range of musicians, from the beginner to the professional -- and Yamaha's online support (including MIDI tracks, tutorials and much more) is simply top-notch. Do be sure to get a piano pedal with this, though -- you'll need it for sustain effects (whereas my old keyboard simply had a button for those).

I was surprised to get a large folding stand along with the keyboard, as the stand is not described as being part of the package. It's probably a good thing, as this keyboard is sustantially heavier and wider than my old keyboard.

5.0 out of 5 stars We love this keyboard!, March 11, 2008
This review is from: Yamaha YPT400MS Portable Electronic Keyboard with 61 Full Size Touch Sensitive Keys and Keyboard Stand (Electronics)
I purchased this for my son a few months ago since he's been taking piano lessons. I chose this over a traditional piano for space saving reasons. Wow...this keyboard is amazing and lots of fun. Its light and very portable and has a wonderful demo lessons. Everyone in the family fights over who gets to us it. The grand piano feature sounds so authentic that even my sons piano teacher thought we owned the real thing. This keyboard gets 5 thumbs up :)
