5.0 out of 5 stars Yamaha Recorders
I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered my Yamaha YRS-314B soprano recorder. My prior experience with "plastic" recorders and flutes had not been a positive one. I'll also admit to a bit of snobbery as well. Having played handmade recorders from different types of wood (pear, walnut, oak) I was coming from the school of "it can't be any good unless it's a piece of...

3.0 out of 5 stars Recorder
It seems fine. My kid hasn't used it yet. He's just learning about it. So far it's good.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered my Yamaha YRS-314B soprano recorder. My prior experience with "plastic" recorders and flutes had not been a positive one. I'll also admit to a bit of snobbery as well. Having played handmade recorders from different types of wood (pear, walnut, oak) I was coming from the school of "it can't be any good unless it's a piece of art". Boy was I wrong and happily so. My Yamaha has a great sound and tone. It's easier to maintain and clean than my "artwork" versions and is consistent during play. Don't let the price and "plastic" frighten you. This is a great instrument to learn to play. I've played it at church in a recorders group and it sounds as good as, or better than, its wooden counterparts. Very reasonably priced and it came with a cleaning kit. All around great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 314 Yamaha soprano, September 17, 2009
This review is from: Yamaha YRS-314B Soprano Recorder, Key of C (Electronics)
The new Yamaha soprano is well worth the extra price, the sound is fantastic for a plastic, and is far better than most cheap wood and some better wood recorders, the play is very easy like my handmade wood. Way better than I would have thought possible for plastic. The simulated wood finish is also nice and feels good to play.

5.0 out of 5 stars An affordable gem - professional quality at student prices - in simulated Ebony finish, April 16, 2011

An affordable gem - professional quality at student prices - in simulated Ebony finish

Firstly, this model uses the Baroque fingering convention (not German) - adopted in most countries especially the Commonwealth. Hence parents do well to note this if purchasing for your school child.

+: Produces beautiful sonorous tones ... reliable intonation and highly responsive - a joy to play ++ much more.
Easy to maintain - washable. Durable. High standards of manufacture guarantee consistent homogeneous quality between each instrument - you can be confident what
you are purchasing. Selection becomes a non issue. Losses can be replaced by simply purchasing another one and you will know that you will be purchasing similar
performance capability. Professional quality made affordable to the masses.

-: Does clog somewhat after extended play but the instrument can be prepped beforehand with anti-clog solution available from recorder specialist. This was provided
to me when I purchased the goosenecked YRT 304B but I haven't used it yet.

I am very happy with my purchase of the Yamaha YRS, YRA 314B and 316B (yes I purchased all four) which I think is at par with branded wooden recorders 6-10 times the price. A great second instrument or spare for travelling.

I can personally attest that it is true that the simulated woodgrain finish versions YRS 314 & 316 (strangely enough) produce a superior tone to the normal ABS resin finish 302 model - perhaps this is due to the outer coating that resonates better. For not a lot more, the simulated wood-grain version IS well-worth paying for.

YRS 312B in simulated Rosewood has a rich warm reddish brown colour whilst YRS 314B in simulated Ebony is a quieter yellow brown - both with attractive printed woodgrain finish.

Yamaha did a real service to the world by making this attractive gem so affordable.
